I love when they leave a spot open for a missing member. Some artists may adjust to make the visual presentation more ‘appealing’ but I love that they almost give honor to the fact that they are only complete when there are all 7 of them. He was away for about 2 months to recover from surgery and had rehabilitation, so he was not with the group for almost all of the award season. He was represented by a snowman for one performance and they did other things in addition to leaving his space in the choreography and leaving his voice on the track when they performed. (I messed up on the dates: his surgery was in November 2020 and he returned in 2021)

"I Need You" is the beginning of their storyline (BU). It's pretty complicated, confusing & dark. Some of the video's are more like mini movies & their acting is really good. I don't know if you're interested in trying to figure it out or if you just want to watch & enjoy the mv's. Either way is fine. Your choice. The live you watched is from 2020 and it was when Suga had surgery so he wasn't there. It was actually the first time in a while that they performed that song with the whole choreography. That performance was for the event of the same music show where they got their first ever music show win (and it's with I Need U hence they performed this specific song)

Interesting fact: This song was the song that gave them their first music show win! Three years after debut with no wins, there were even talks about them disbanding if this song didn't win.. Highly recommend u guys check out their performances from when this song was released.. U can really see that extra raw passion... all i can say is, welcome to the BU. Bangtan Universe is such a rabbit hole and it does have a storyline. This is the part in their career that really took the entire music industry for a whirlwind of a ride. To follow the BU there is a correct order of how things should be seen, so if you guys are really interested in the BU i would recommend following the storyline and becoming your own investigators and trying to find out what the storyline is all about.

The MV you guys saw is the extended version, it's long because I Need U is part of the BU (Bangtan Universe) and it shows more history. There is another MV on the 1theK channel that lasts less and is the version that they usually sing in their presentations. As many of the comments said, this is part of the bts universe storyline..there is a webnovel called "Save Me" by bts.. Which u can read to understand it completely or u can watch the MVs(as they r inter related) in order and the short films, highlight reels etc that give snippets of the story..its very complex and dont want to give spoilers but basically it's about this group of 7 boys who happen to get detention together one day, and they really bond.. The story dives into their individual lives and they have some deep traumas that eventually gets to them..and how they keep trying to fix things..Theres a video by xCeleste thats really insightful and gives u the basic idea of what's going on.. Spoiler: Since u guys asked, the guy V stabs, is his drunk father who is always abusive towards the girl, who is his sister.. And one day he really snaps and stabs him.. UT OH they are going down the rabbit hole!!!! UT OH...OMG there's so much but if you want to know the full story, you will have to get the list IN ORDER to understand the full story. It's called "BU" BTS Universe...it's where there is an ongoing story from years ago, which has each video giving answers but providing much more questions. Dealing with artistic and social problems and mental health. OMG someone must have a list of the MVs in order. Not only full music videos, but also there are notes given in albums, which you might have received as well as the Short Films and Hightlight Reels. this is the start of the bangtan universe they have a storyline from hyyh era and it's keep going till map of the soul album the music videos are connected to the storyline and there's an épilogue too and the highlights videos it's so fun to watch and trying to solve the puzzle to understand it you can dive in it if you want to it's so much fun I myself enjoyed it and I discovered things about art I didn't know I even read a book connected to an mv just to understand it and it was really fun

Welcome to the BU [Bangtan Universe]… after almost 5 years in the fandom I’m still not ready to dive into this. I think i will go insane if i do. There are so many theories n storylines. U need to dedicate a lot of time n energy into it, I’m scared. The ‘girl’ in this song is actually referring to themselves, not an actual girl. And the choreo is one of Jiminie’s fav cos he loves how artistic it is. I Need U is very special to BTS and ARMY. Their first chart win in Korea came from this song if i remember it correctly.

I feel the same! BU is intriguing, but I lack the time and patience to dive into it. Same reason I will not read Game of Thrones until it is finished. I did go back to when this music video was released to see how people reacted to it. No spoilers but...everyone was freaking out, completely confused, but also loved it!

Not only is this the beginning of the BTS Universe like everyone has already said, it’s the song that changed everything for them. They changed styles ( no more hip hoppy like their debut of 2013 ), and they won their first award which made the non-fans take notice .

The storyline of this MV is complicated if you haven't seen the other BU content. You'll have to watch the other videos to fully understand just how wild the events in this music video were. There are also notes, the webtoon, theories, etc. BU is still ongoing so we know a lot at this point but still not nearly enough.

You guys had a similar reaction to the fandom when INU came out, we were so confused about everything, and don't let me even get started on the amount of theories that came out, they were really good theories, all made sense to a certain point others were spot on (like the Butterfly Effect theory), other were weird, but at the same time made sense after you read it (like the INUxDope theory, this one was before the prologue came out, so you would think "OK, so it does make sense, but at the same time, Dope doesn't follow much of the actual story line presented in INU), etc... Anyways, there's a Webtoon with the whole story, you guys should check that out as well.

This song is so incredibly special to ARMYs!! This was a game changer for BTS and ARMY, because this was their first song that won in any music show, and was really the start of their success journey. While the songs before this one slapped too they weren’t able to achieve the kind of commercial success they deserved. As a lot of other comments have said, it’s the first video in the Bangtan Universe of videos, creating a storyline that stretches all the way till their MotS albums. Another reason why I think this song and this album did so well, was that unlike the previous albums where the members were forcefully trying too hard to be ‘hip hop’ in order to fit their concept, here they’re more relaxed and themselves. Instead of trying to fit their concept, they’re making the concept fit them.

Suga's missing :P + no audience and no fanchants And sh*tty camera work as expected from tv shows xD Please check the dance practice (even in your own time!!) to appreciate the symmetrical choreo and the shapes they make, it is AWESOME :)
