31:00 Ummm I don't agree with this theory that this is all happening in Jin's head, but judging by how this theory was created in 2016, I can understand why the theorist thinks that. With what we know now, hindsight and all, I don't think it's all in Jin's head. But who knows tbh because that's such a good theory! Other than that, the theorist is pretty good with other things. (I'm trying not to spoil things or at least big things lol). I’m not 100% committed to the “it’s all in Jin’s head theory” but I do think it’s something more closely related to Jin because of the flower and him looking directly at the rest of them at the end. It may be the members representing Jin’s experiences when he was younger or they may be real people that Jin is friends with. I’m swapping between the two right now leaning with his previous experiences resurfacing as memories. This is sort like FNAF Game Theory where every video might build off the theory I’m with from the previous one or I’ll just throw it all out and rebuild with new information. I’m using theories online for foundation to sort of build my own and everyones comments are helping me form my own.

I think the same as you. However, the next album continued their themes of growing up as well as the themes of loving yourself. The boys are definitely not in Jin's head cuz it's a whole story. This theory though... it makes sense too. Cuz it was only when Jin matured as well in the BU and learned to love himself did he start finding a way to save the boys. Also I don't want to say much so my thoughts kinda seem disjointed. I think the theory in a way can extend out of the HYYH era simply put.

main issue with that website (while they compiled things nicely) is that it does not explain the album eras, and what they mean. 'I Need U' was on the on 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1', the albums the songs are on are important, as they carry the thematic concepts of the album. This album was all about the fragility of youth, as depicted in the MV. So if you really want to deep dive into this BU so early, it might help to know the albums the songs are on, and what the albums are about. The alternate title of the album is "The Time when Flowers Bloom" aka Youth.

OP nynex4 post in this thread "the time when flowers bloom" is ACTUALLY the "more" LITERAL translation of the expression in Chinese 花樣年華 pronounced "hwa yang nien hwa" (HYNH), which in Koream, those 4 characters are pronounced "hwa yang yeon hwa" (HYYH). The Hong Kong Movie titled 花樣年華, for the English title, they translated... or more like NAMED as "In the Mood for Love" more along the theme of the movie, but the MEANING and ESSENSE of 花樣年華 is not really depicted in the English title. So 100% it is NOT LITERAL translation at all. There is no "mood" or "love" in the words 花樣年華. "The time when flowers bloom" is more literal, and how BigHit/BTS translated to "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" is actually quite good translation based on both the SENTIMENTS and partially literal. The lengthy translation for the 花樣年華 expression is more of a combination of both... like... "in the state when flowers bloom, it is the most beautiful years"... meaning the youth years (when flowers bloom) are the best and most beautiful in one's life's. Anyways, so a separate issue, even if they wanted to use the same English title as the movie, it really doesn't have to do with the translation of 花樣年華, bc the movie's English title isn't a literal translation to begin with. So what they end up with "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" I feel is actually much better, depicts the theme of 花樣年華, youth, and growing pains better, in my opinion. "In the Mood for Love" doesn't prepresent any of the themes and messages what the album series 花樣年華 HYYH intended to show, so I'm glad they didn't use the English movie title, which made no sense for BTS's HYYH. Actually, I've always been wondering, and frustratingly disappointed, at why on earth they named the English movie title THAT, bc the Mandarin expression 花樣年華 is much more beautiful, more depth, and more nuanced in relations to the theme of the movie. Maybe it was too long to properly express it with actual literal translation...? Yes, the HYYH title, 4 simple words, end up long in English, which I guess doesn't fit well on a movie poster, and probably needed something more catchy in English...? Ha! (after some internet searches) Actually, a lot of the Hong Kong movies (looked up others by the same director) using very literary Chinese idioms/phrases as titles, often have English titles that are not translations of the Chinese phrases at all... Anyways... went off on a tangent train of thought...

I didn't mean it's not a translation per se, I just meant it's not a "literal" translation as you mentioned. The issue was not whether or not they wanted to use the movie title (I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere, especially RM also made a brief comment during "useless knowledge" that their album title was inspired by the movie title, HYYH, the Chinese characters, bc they used those 4 characters on the album cover), but it's the "literal" part that might have been misunderstood. It's OK that they wanted to use the movie title translation in English. My point was it was not "literal" translation from a language standpoint. Yes, that is the English title for the movie, whether translated or named or whatever. It was just not a "literal" translation, is all. I do believe as you mentioned about the copyright issue. It is the English title afterall. It just wasn't literal. Although personally, I am really glad they didn't use that English title in the end, no matter bc of copyright reason or any other reason. Haha. :-p

cultural difference, but in South Korea, they don't have that toxic masculinity that we do in the US. Males can be very physically touchy and show affection with each other, and it not be a couples thing. If you plan to continue watching BTS content, you will surely come across them being touchy with each other often.

if you really want to get into the BU and the boys backstories, i recommend reading the save me webtoon. while this theory makes sense for the music video and song, in the webtoon, the boys are childhood friends who grew apart and some moved away. Jin comes back to their hometown and realizes that all of their lives have more or less fallen apart without each other; V killing his abusive father, jimin and j-hope landing themselves in a mental facility, etc, which is why they look happier as a group, and more sad individually (BTW the rest of this comment will have some spoilers so honestly of you wanna ignore it I won't blame you). to fix this he decides to time travel and save all the boys, only he gets stuck in a time loop; going back to april 11th every time one of the boys dies or he fails to save them from the inevitable. he quickly realizes that he cannot save all of them but he's stuck in this time loop and he can't give up on his friends. eventually v figures out that jin is time traveling and messing with their lives and he resents jin for it. by the time you hit the wings part of the storyline (especially blood sweat and tears japanese ver. MV) , v will be something of an antagonist. the storyline is pretty complicated and as of now it's incomplete/open ended. all of what i referenced above will show up eventually in the upcoming videos but if you want unfiltered, clean cut storyline you'll have to read the webtoon (or the hyyh notes). also the boys are in pairs; V and RM, Jimin and J-Hope, Suga and Jungkook, and Jin by himself. the pairs' storylines are usually pretty interconnected (Jimin and J-hope ending up in the same mental facility, RM being the first person V calls after he kills his father, Jungkook being the one who saves Suga from the fire). These pairs become pretty important, especially for the wings short films.

The BU is so complex and convoluted that even veteran ARMYs are confused at what to believe 😭 The theory you read is a very good one that I agree with (only for the HYYH trilogy tho, the BU goes beyond that). There is a general plot that has been confirmed through notes and comics/webtoons. It’s pretty cool! But again, very very confusing with only a handful of solid answers

Everything you read are just peoples own theories, don't take them literally. The boys are not necessarily just aspects of Jin's personality, that is just another theory. When I went through the BU, I don't have access to the books so I watched what I could and then at the end I did the explanation by XCELESTE channel. You should watch everything through first so you can come up with your own theories!💜

This is one hell of a good story, and this is just the beginning. They wanted to make it I need you friend, but changed it. Basically, in a really simplistic way, they’re well while together, but they’re in pain and trouble when apart. There are no break-ups in this story, unless we count the Yoongi/Jungkook one. That’s Taehyung’s sister, not mother. Jungkook did get hit by the car. That theory page is old. This story has been explained better by the Save Me webtoon. Taehyung did kill his dad. You should watch more videos before going into explained stuff

Also keep in mind, I think I saw somewhere where RM said the original lyrics was" I need you friend" but he changed it because it didn't make sense. IE. Because it didn't appeal to the masses as as much as "I need you girl" would. BTS as a whole and RM in particular has a very cerebral way of thinking. You don't really get to understand the dept of his creative mind until you hear him talk about his lyrics and thought process. He will often change title and lyrics he most recently did this with his new song called 'Wildflower' he originally titled it 'flowerwork.' BTS and hybe love to make songs that at first glance look more surface level but then embed muli laylered deeper meaning into their songs that you have to dig deep to understand. That's one of the aspects that make them great in my opinion.

Also the Butterfly at 1:01:50 is symbolism for "The Butterfly Effect" which is related to different timelines. 1:06:29 The boys are real, not different persona of Jin.(I hope I'm correct).😅

people are obviously free to make any theories they want but this theory is not really correct considering all the information we have, i would recommend using the chronological timeline of bu content that landon mark's roadmap has, going through everything based on that and making your own theories based on the official content, later you can delve into what others thing or look at explanation videos, this is how i went through bu and it was really fun, if you need any help i am happy to help, you should even be able to find all the notes as pdfs in english on the internet

theories exist only because people haven't read The Notes books which explain the storyline quite straight forward through character's diaries (it's an official release). if you read them, there is barely any chance to straight away i mean theories are fun and it's interesting to see many ways in which different minds can interpret the same visual story, but if you want to follow the story as you watch mvs without being confused as to why it doesn't click with the theory someone created, you need to access the *official* sources there is Save Me webtoon that shows the very beginning of the story and what it is about actually, i think it's a good place to start after i need u. the webtoon doesn't say more than what you need to start thinking in a right direction, so you can freely enjoy looking for symbolism, connections and meaning watching all other BU mvs after that peace ✌

Theorists who analysed in a metaphoric sense like we're all in Jin's mind were way back like during 2016 or earlier like Dreamteller or Skopf. I did it the same way too, like using Inside Out as a comparison. I think maybe one of them did it like that too. But even back then I knew the boys were real. xCeleste is pretty detailed in explaining the whole storyline except, what fun would it be to have all of the answers thrown on your lap. I like seeing you analyse/theorize without major spoilers. Also xCeleste's explanation should be read like after you finish the Love Yourself part of it even if you haven't fully read through the notes - I still think it's okay to start then.

This song is beautiful. The composition of all of the singing parts is perfect. Jungkook and Jimin’s high notes in the chorus are wondrous give the chorus just that little something to make it unforgettable. I also really like how V’s and Jin’s singing parts lead up to the chorus. Everything about this song just pulls you in and refuses to let you go until the final second. The transitions are perfect. The story at the root of the song is a story of youth. BTS explores the dichotomy of angst and optimism, love and hate, and anxiety and fearlessness that defines the teenage experience. "I need you, girl. Why do I need you when I know it hurts me?" they sing. "I Need U" further plays up the horrors of young love by pulling inspiration from R&B tunes to build an atmosphere of heartbreak and longing. The whole MV is an allegory of the hardships of growing up. This whole video focuses on each of the BTS members at their worst, as they struggle with pain, depression, abuse and anger. While they may be fine when with their friends, each of the members are completely miserable and vulnerable when alone. All of their stories were so real, that I can’t help but be so touched by each one. This video is so moving, and it portrays the raw emotions of each member so well. The juxtaposition between the members’ happy moments with each other and sad moments alone is really what makes this such an impactful video. In one moment, we see Suga and Jungkook cuddling in front of a fire, and in the next we get the image of Jimin submerging himself underwater. It is dramatic changes like this that make the meaning of the video so vivid: when they are together, they can be as happy and carefree as they want, but once they are alone and behind closed doors, their worlds come crashing down. BTS have said that “‘I NEED U’ shows you the good amongst the bad and “RUN” shows you the bad amongst the good”. "My life's ruined all because of you. I'm so done with it, I don't want you anymore,". They then break into a chorus of "I need you, girl. Why do you love me and leave me all by yourself? I need you, girl." Sounds like they're having a hard time making their mind up about this girl, huh? Well, when RM wrote the lyrics he initially intended the lyrics to be "I need you friend", but if you sing it like that it doesn't sound good, so he changed it to "I need u girl", but the real meaning is that “I need u friend”, so it's a breakup song and at the same time it fits into the Bangtan Universe storyline. You need to watch all the MV's in order to understand the storyline. It's almost like a puzzle but lemme tell you it will blow your mind. The storyline itself is very deep. RM - Works in a gas station (which he hates), the clients treat him like shit (throwing money on the ground instead of giving it to him) and imagery of him smoking. Jin - in a room alone, Jin burns away his flower petals, the last images of beauty that he owns. He is a very important character in the storyline of this MV and other MVs. (All the MVs under the same storyline can be found by looking at the description of the videos, they are marked with "BU content certified by Big Hit Entertainment”). Suga - in a motel, missing someone (scene in the bed), buys gasoline and burns the room with himself inside (suicide). J-Hope - is sick and needs meds (apparently suffers from narcolepsy, he actually has munchausen’s syndrome), but abuses the drugs and passes out in the sidewalk of a road from an overdose. Jimin - in the bathtub burning a photo (his memories), he seems in distress , desolate and scared. Tries to drown himself. V - catches his dad (an alcoholic) abusing his sister, in anger and adrenaline he starts stabbing his dad and kills him. Jungkook - walks around alone at night, basically asking for trouble as he passes by a bunch of thugs without a care in the world. Seems to not care about anything (depression) and ends up being hit by a car at the end after being beaten by said thugs. As you dive further into the BU, you'll find that the boys are paired up (and a couple of their relationships are queer coded). Taehyung and RM, Jimin and Jhope, Jungkook and Yoongi. The theory you read is a little outdated, since it was written around 2016, before a lot of information and other videos came out. I recommend you watch xCeleste's BU explanation videos haha they are VERY good! Also Bookish theories has a series of videos about the BU as well.

For me, I need you itself is a representation of mourning together with an andulthood that had to start way to early. But that's just my personal take because I had this happen to me. Little side info to better understand my context: when I was 15 my mom died suddenly, resulting in me having to become partly adult. While my dad went to work I did the laundry and would sometimes cook which is something a 15 year old is usually not confronted with. I need U is a perfect representation of how I felt back then, struggling to balance everything: my mourning, household, school, friends etc.

Each of the guys represents a problem/issue that a lot of people, teens in particular, have to deal with. This video is an introduction, so not everything is shown yet. I'm not going to spoil JK or RM for you. but V is obviously domestic violence, J-Hope is drug addiction, including prescription drugs. Jimin is depression and Suga is suicidal tendencies. The Flower that Jin has is exactly 6 petals. Also, there are closer friends within the group of friends and it is important to recognize each pair. Also, the theory that you read is a pretty good one, but later information in the BU is a bit conflicting with it. All, in all, you did a really, really good job with this first video.

One cultural aspect to keep in mind is that touch and closeness between Korean guys is very normal. In fact, you can look up skinship and what it means in a Korean context. It’s very normal to see younger guys hanging on each other and touching each other in ways that might seem different from a western perspective.

Just want to make a clarification that I should have made in the video. It’s less of how guy friends would lie together and more so of level of intimacy. I wouldn’t lie like that with my girl or guy friends but I would with my family or partner because I’m closer with them. That’s why later in the video I thought maybe RM and V are different states of Jin with RM being and older state consoling V a younger state of Jin through the dramatic event with Jin’s father because he is older and can handle it better. It could be argued that if they aren’t states of Jin but rather their own individuals that they are really close friends that are comfortable physically at that level. I’m not comfortable with my friends at that level but I am with my family however that’s more of a me problem. I should have been more clear about that in the video.

You’re right on how close people are denotes their comfort and protective/family relationship with each other from our Western perspective. In a Korean context it just may mean something a little different.

I'm a certified BU Nerd and I think the theory you read mostly lines up with mine. I highly recommend reading Demain by Herman Hesse before watching the short films. It is very short and will be a great guide book for you. The BU is very complex and I see new angles to it all the time. Looking forward to tagging along with you on your journey.

Hey Nick, I think this theory is old and it's not the most accepted one. The more accepted theory is.. Jin has something special to him that can take him back in time where he tries to save his friends who would otherwise end up in misery. That's why the flower is shining inside jin's heart. This theory is most acceptable as BTS have some web comics that go by this theory. Xceleste has explained this theory in her video

Fantastic and so spot on!! The radical thing they did with the BI is to tackle real stories about the actual problems youth face. Poverty, bullying, addiction, abuse, mental illness, and self harm. They used a lot of non linear story telling to take you in a journey with these characters over many songs, albums, other media. They pair up the guys in friendship and you see those pair’s throughout the stories. The songs being so emotional and fantastic helps too.

Nick you jumped head first right in the BU. Does your head hurt yet? 😂 It is much like following the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. Just as you are thinking you are getting a grip on it, things change the next moment. The thing to remember about the BU is that it very slowly developed. It is spread over songs and albums, webtoons, notes etc. So as more information was provided, theories changed. The important thing to keep in mind going forward is all 7 are “real” in the storyline. Once you have seen all the other clues it will make more sense. I would set aside this website’s theory for now and be open as you go through the rest of the BU. I love how your mind was thinking though based on what you saw in the video. Once you find out more information, I’m interested to see where your mind goes next. Until the next one…. Stay Purple! 💜
