The reason why they're getting shot - "ready, aim, fire - together we won't die - trust that together we're bulletproof". If you notice, they may get shot, they may stumble and fall, but immediately, they're able to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and keep right on going on. That is the message of the song - you will take "bullets" in life, they may make you stumble and fall, but trust that you won't break and will be able to get up again. Because together we won't die - NOT today. This is part of the message that IS a part of their earlier songs. All their earlier songs deal with the pressures and stresses imposed by parents, teachers, Korean society, and the strict education system on the youth. Korea has one of the highest rates of suicides in the world, especially among teens, and the reason is because of the enormous strain to study and become successful. So BTS' earlier songs, since they were fresh out of school and were able to relate, are all to support kids, telling them it's OK to fail, you don't have to live a life with No More Dreams, you can tell parents and teachers N.O, you can set Fire to it all and live your life imperfectly, so long as you live your life to the fullest. That you need to hold on to life, firm grip, because you will NOT die TODAY.

In case no one told you already "crow-tit" is a type of bird that's really small and colloquially in Korea it's like a try-hard or someone who doesn't really "know their place." It comes from the Korean saying "If a crow tit tries to walk like a stork, it'll tear its legs." It's supposed to serve as a reminder to people of lower status or youth to know their place and keep their place. BTS were called baepsaes (the korean word for crow-tit) from very early on in their careers because everyone thought they were too big for their britches and they wanted more than what they were entitled to as small-time idols. They released a song called "baepsae" (which is a total bop and the dance practice is so swaggy) that uses that same idiom to criticize the way youth are told to know their place and do as they're told by older generations. Anyway, I'm just giving you the background bc a lot of english-speakers are thrown seeing "crow-tit" in the subtitles. haha. It recurs a lot in the BTS world, especially in their older music so it's good to know.

Awesome reaction, thank you! I've heard that Not Today was inspired by a speech from Martin Luther King Jr. or at the very least they used one of his speeches in the lyrics. "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." Some of my favorite lyrics in Not Today are "Throw away the fear in your eyes" and "Break the glass ceiling that locks you up". It's about not letting other tell you who you should be or letting hate "kill" you, that's why their getting shot. However BTS still gets back up and keeps moving forward! And I believe the people in black are supposed to be ARMY. At 6:05 BTS is being shot and at 6:09 you can see some of the people in black are on the ground too, but then at 6:13 the people in black run in front of BTS and get shot. They are protecting BTS. Also I just wanted to let you know that Baepsae is the name of a small short legged bird, it translates to Crow-tits. (Baepsae; Korean crow-tits refers to someone who tries hard to achieve something out of his league. Here it means underdogs who fight hard.) I can't wait until you get into BTS' songs that don't have MVs because they have a song called Baepsae and I know you're gonna freak out when you watch the live and check out the explain video for it!!

This song is about the struggle against the forces that oppress us, hold us back, that are trying to destroy our spirits. They are "getting shot" by society's pressures and demands that are oppressive in nature. You realize that in the song they talk about being "bullet proof" and that is the name of their group. So this is one of their earliest big hits. You've got to pay attention to the lyrics bro. In some interviews, we learn that there were quite a few young people who wrote them when this song came out, saying that it prevented them from committing suicide. It is indeed proof of the power of art--- and also fitting the goals of what BTS wants--- to speak for the struggling and especially the youth of the world, to empower. Their speech at the UN also reflects this commitment.

This is a dance practice that you have to watch. Always remember where BTS started, they will also be sure to remind you. Their foundation will always be hard and hip-hop based. That's why you NEED TO listen to their B-sides, it's impossible to truly understand them just on their main tracks, they're too layered. This song was a response to a lot of the hate they were getting. Sort of saying no matter what, as long as everyone was together (them and ARMY), no one can bring them down. They don't even take individual endorsements. They are a brotherhood to the end. This is one of my favorite songs.

The dancers represent ARMYs. In this MV, BTS is protecting armys while army are running with BTS. Even when they are shot (in real world, taking hits from haters, etc), bts is going to keep getting back up and fighting. Notice the ending scenes where BTS links arms protecting the dancers?
