25:20 the question you had about facial hair: Genetically, Koreans tend to have little to no body hair and men have pretty sparse facial hair most of the time. In east asian cultures, it's pretty normal to have no facial hair since that is the beauty standard there. Hope that answers your question, somewhat. When my dad tried to grow a beard, my mom was so mad at him bc it looked weird and she said it was gross. (I'm Korean, for reference)

Just remember that the 'sub' and 'lead' roles don't really matter. As long as you remember the 3 rappers and 4 vocalists, main vocalist (Jungkook) and main dancer (J-hope/Jimin) you'll be fine. Honestly the super specified roles are outdated, they usually focus on debut BTS not 2021 BTS, like how all 3 rappers have been singing in recent songs, but they aren't considered vocalists. I think they all have their main roles (vocalist/rapper) then they can do other stuff on top, but it doesn't have to be labelled every time. Like with the vocalists they all do the exact same thing and have similar line distribution, Jungkook is the only one who realistically has a different role as main vocalist, as he does the vocal guides, all of the backup vocals, adlibs, harmonies, etc. Which makes his role different and needs to be specified to praise him for the extra work he does. But the other sub/lead roles really aren't necessary so don't stress too much about forgetting them 😊

The labels don’t really matter. It’s best not to confused yourself with them. The only thing that matters is vocal line: Jin Jimin V Jungkook and rap line: RM Suga J-Hope. And even that is blurred these days with songs like Dynamite and PTD.

The labels are relics of KPOP, first introduced by SM. For BTS, it exist on paper. RM himself has said that they assign lines based on who does it best. BigHit is definitely breaking away from this position thing because TXT doesn't even have positions.

regarding RM and Jin being often in the back... notice that they mostly are left/right outside? its because even tho they might be considered "weak dancers" within the kpop industry (which i don't agree with, bc they both are freaking awesome dancers), they are very consistent and in tune, which makes them the WINGS in lots of choreos, bc they make everything look perfectly balanced out.

With regard to facial hair, it’s not just k-pop. K-drama actors are also always totally clean shaven, unless the character is middle-aged/old. As far as I have seen it’s also the same in Chinese pop and dramas. (Also, I was REALLY happy when my husband of 12 years shaved his beard😆)

To make it clear and easy. Now, just say RM, Suga, and J-Hope are rapper. Jin, Jimin, V, Jungkook are vocalist. The term main, lead, sub are common in kpop group to box someone into certain role, but I think in BTS it's not important anymore because they don't sing based on that role. They sing and rap based on whose voice is more suitable for certain part of the song. BTS are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. That's all. 😀

To be honest BH never really cared about the subsections. The ones that really matter is RM is the leader, Hobi is dance leader and Jungkook is main vocalist. They all had the placements at one point but really they don't matter. Placement really doesn't mean anything with this group because they all can do everything so don't get stuck on what they were. Jungkook speaking voice is not high, actually, and it has gotten lower with age. Namjoon, Yoongi and Taehyung have lower voices, although they speak kinda gently, so it's not always evident. Yoongi has a lot of vocal fry too. Jin and Jimin are the only members with much higher speaking voices. Jimin's tone is bright, Jin has more of a slightly nasally tone. J Hope is like in between in pitch.

When I first learned about RM and Jin being, I quote, the "worst dancers" of the group... I actually spend time watching a dance practice while focusing on them. If you watch some of their dance practices like "Danger" for example. Even when they put them at the back, you couldn't tell the difference. They blend in so well that even when you focus on them without watching the entirety of the performance, they CAN DANCE SO WELL. If you don't know them, you'll never know they aren't considered "dancers" of the team. I think if their dancing just seem a little lesser than Jhope's or Jimin's, it's maybe because the dancing style isn't really their type of style they can dance to but still, they blend in pretty well.

Just so you know(28:00), BTS was never forced on any diets. BigHit/HYBE wishes to treat and train Idols as people with artistic freedom. Which is a big reason BTS started out and has evolved even more outside of traditional K-pop. Today HYBE functions almost like a school(or a camp maybe?) where trainees can sign up for lessons on different subjects outside of their mandatory once(from what I understand). There are no rules where they aren't allowed to date, or need to diet to lose weight. BTS choose to diet if they wanted, but aren't forced and are encouraged to not overdo anything. But forcing people to diet and be as skinny as possible is a common demand a lot of companies demand from trainees. It is a real problem, just not on BTS has ever been forced on.

@@vikaursa Like I said, from what I understand the diets were done by their own wishes. Of course food, and looks, and society is a strange combination that puts a lot of pressure on people, sadly. But BTS has no rules forcing this on them. Neither does any other artist under HYBE. And by how you worded this, it sounds like you are blaming Jin's manager. Something I would think is unfair because Jin was joking when he was talking about it. We don't know the full context, so we don't really know if this encouraged Jin wanting to go on his diet or not.

I think healthy should equal good-looking, but I suppose it can be harder to hide unhealthy tendencies and appearance if you are overweight than underweight. And when I say overweight/underweight, I don't mean being chubby or having natural fat on the body. Or being naturally skinny or a slim body. I mean where people struggle with taking care of themself and have an unhealthy relationship with food. Like Jin and Jimin used to, and many others. (And if anyone has an unhealthy relationship with food, I'm not at all shaming. It just means it's something to work on, either alone, or ideally, get some help.)

yeah. I'm also part of the film/music video industry, and we always have umbrellas ready to take care of the artists when it rains or when it's hot as heck. Other than not getting tanned, sometimes we need to have the artists near the shooting location and not all the way back at the tents. Tents can be far away at times. If it's like a short waiting period, better have the artists under the umbrellas than have them walk all the way back to the tents. We sometimes ready portable chairs as well.

Jungkook is the main vocalist and other than just sing his parts in the song, he actually does most of the backing chorus in the background and also sing the vocal guides for the songs. Jin is a vocalist, sub-vocalist is something they do sometimes as JK is a sub- rapper JHope is a sub-vocalist. Jin is a lead vocalist with V and Jimin, Jk is main vocalist. Dance line JHope is main dancer Jimin , V and Jk are lead dancer. Rm is main rapper Suga and JHope are lead. Don’t worry it takes time to get it right.

THANK YOU!!! You are so right that it is a LOT to remember. It took me forever. I respect that you try so hard, and I support and applaud your efforts!! For everyone saying it doesn't matter... The positions DO matter. If you listen to BTS, they consistently praise and brag about Jungkook and JHope as their Main Vocalist and Main Dancer. You will see this in interviews, documentaries that they do, Run BTS... These positions are jobs that they perform within the group. They are not limited to just those roles, as you can see, everyone dances, everyone sings. Line distribution is not tied to their positions. BTS has said that they choose the member who best fits each part of the song, which is why sometimes some of the feature more. It doesn't mean their overall jobs have changed.

actual roles: (though it all gets blurred but this is generally accurate to their amount of lines) main > lead > sub (or just no prefix) jungkook - main vocalist, lead dancer, sub-rapper jimin - main dancer, lead vocalist v - vocalist, dancer jin - vocalist, "visual" suga - lead rapper, typically the main producer of the group j-hope - main dancer, rapper, sub-vocalist rm - main rapper, leader, he's also typically the main songwriter don't fret about these too much though. you'll figure it out yourself over time but it's not THAT important anymore.

Pls don’t fret about the main, lead or sub😅 sub is actually when they partially do the opposite role. For example, Jhope is a rapper, but he also sings that makes him a sub-vocalist. Same thing for JK, he is primarily Main Vocalist, but since he sometimes rap, he is a sub-rapper. Jin and V are already a vocalist, so they cant be sub-vocalists. In the end, just remember that RM is the leader, Jhope the dance/ performance leader. Don’t mind to much on the labels main, lead, sub. They are all equally important and precious to the group.

Dont get confused with all this main, lead sub nonsense. I dont think BTS goes by this. The fact that they all do their own songs sort of demolishes this theory. Common sense would question these role naming. If you listen to Film Out you would hardly call Jin a sub. I have never seen any official info *lately* of these roles. They may have started giving such role naming because of kpop, but along the way as they started doing their own things their way, different from other kpop bands these lost the meaning.

there are three "real" serious producers in BTS, sitting on the computer getting down and dirty building stuff from scratch, the three rappers. Rm, suga and jhope. Suga was initially signed to bighit solely as a producer actually and he even produces music for other artists (Epik High Eternal Sunshine, IU Eight and much more). He's the main producer among the members while RM is the main songwriter. 90% of all BTS lyrics aside from the rap parts of the other rappers are written by RM actually. He started writing poetry in middle school which then turned into rap lyric. All three rappers produced their mixtapes alone and a lot of BTS songs, but not all. The three vocalists aren't producers but they learned it a bit here and there from the rappers and tried it in a couple of songs with help

For main vocalist and why it's important bc he doesn't just sing alot or just the best technique or experience but he does alot of work in behind the scenes from guides , harmonizing, background vocals etc jungkook is credited in almost all bts songs when it comes to vocal credits (gang , background, chorus vocals)

On dancing - as others have said, the bar is set pretty high in BTS. J-Hope and Jimin are some of the best dancers in the industry and have won National awards for dancing. The “worst” dancers in BTS keep up with them seamlessly, so they are still all stellar dancers. It’s just some of them have to work harder and don’t live and breathe dancing like the dance line does.

they are perfectionists when it comes to their content .. as short as their choreo for Megan Thee Stallion's verse in Butter and it's just 3 of them that time shooting, it took them soooooooo many takes because they want it to look perfect. Jimmy Fallon was also there when they were filming this specific song ON for his talk show special super early in the morning at the Grand Central subway and he himself said that they are perfectionists. they don't settle for mediocrity even if they could and just stop because they are already famous, they just don't. and that is one more thing that i love about them .. when you get something from them it's of high quality always ♥

RM did not just watch Friends and instantly learn English. He studied English in school and went to an after school English academy like a lot of Koreans do. He watched the Friends series first with Korean subtitles then English then none. He also lived in New Zealand for 6 mos. He is also fluent in Japanese. Most Kpop idols learn Japanese because it is a big market for Kpop. Most of the BTS members speak basic Japanese- there are videos of them doing interviews on Japanese TV shows.

Yes thank you! Like yes RM uses the Friends story jokingly cause it's been asked repetitively in American interviews, but we shouldn't forget that he studied the language formally too. I'm sure his exposure to Friends and other media helped him understand the syntax better, but reducing it to the Friends narrative kind of diminishes the years of effort (school, overseas study) that he actually put in to learn English

You got yourself allll confused..😅 Jin is NOT a sub vocalist. Sub is a term for a partial role, like how JK is a sub rapper and JHope is a sub vocalist, bc those are supplemental to their main roles in the group. Jin is a full vocalist, one of the lead vocalists, along with Jimin and V. JK is the main vocalist bc he's often used as a focal point, as well as doing most of the vocal guides and a LOT of background/hidden vocals. The whole thing is pretty complicated, I know lol

Most ARMY are trying to be helpful and explain or clarify things… Now I am with you when learning about kpop and BTS in a short amount of time. It can be hard to remember so much info and retain it all in such a short amount of time. (IF I AM WRONG ARMY PLEASE CORRECT ME or ADD ON) Here is how I understand Main, Lead, and Sub… Main: General the person who has more experience or more of a say in a certain area. (Does a lot of stuff for that specialty behind the scenes) For example: Jhope is a main dancer so he makes sure everyone is ready or performance and knows the dance but also has a say in the choreography. Lead: Is someone is does the specific area. They do have a say but not as much as the main person. Sub; Someone who generally doesn’t do a certain area but can. They usually can fill in if someone is gone or sick… So you do it occasionally. Leader: A member who makes sure BTS ideas are with the company and the company’s ideas are with BTS. Kind of like a middle man. (Once again I am fairly new to BTS so I could be wrong so please correct me if I am wrong) RM: Leader, main rapper Jin: Singer Suga: Lead rapper Jhope: Rapper, Main dancer, sub-vocalist Jimin: lead singer, main dancer V: lead singer, dancer (he joined the dance line in 2018) Jungkook: Main singer, lead dancer, sub-rapper Rap Line: RM, Suga, and Jhope Dance Line: Jhope, Jimin, JK, and V (joined in 2018) Vocal Line: Jin, V, Jimin, and JK Official Visual Line: Jin and V Now as for the no beards thing. I think in Korea it is a cultural thing not to have beards… Edit: Honestly from what I have read it doesn’t really matter to remember all the main, lead, and sub stuff. I saw a movie producer say that one of the reasons they cover BTS with umbrellas is to make sure they don't tan while filming to make sure that they'll look the same in every shot. Because they spend so much time shooting outside in the sun, they try to minimize the tanning - it would be too expensive and inconveniant if they had to cancel a shoot because someone got sunburned or a side tan. I also think it's from the heat. Yes, I definitely think you can pull of those earrings!

Main/lead seems to be part of the work culture of several Korean industries. You can see those titles on the credits on their videogames and for some positions on films. It's kind of similar to "principal" and "senior" in some Western workplaces. "Sub" is similar to a "junior" position

Omigod most BTS fans don’t even like Kpop and do not consider BTS to be Kpop. BTS have created their own genre. Main lead those titles doesn't work anymore in heavily talented groups like bts. There's hell & heaven difference between debut bts and 2021 bts. The titles have lost it's importance and need as all the members bring absolute equal contributions to the table and contributes equally to songs. Honestly for me, BTS has transcended the standard "roles" in KPOP. Because as you said, and understand, they basically do everything anyway (but of course, they get different parts of what to do depending on the song and their personal skillset/strengths/specialisations). The only people who REALLY fixate on "roles" are solos (who are by definition usually KPOPies who stan only one member) or very new ARMY who get info from Wikipedia or random YT "intros". The ones every one agrees on are hyung line, maknae line (hehe, added these for fun - I know they're not music roles) rap line, vocal line, dance line. Because ppl who insist on limiting their contribution to "sub vocal/rapper/dancer" just because that was the original "designation", make no sense to me. I think one of the reasons that BTS is different than other groups is the fact they do not limit the members to these little boxes. I know that you are approaching this academically (to understand the KPOP system) but it is good to remember, BTS is not KPOP. PS: I'm sorry that you had to read harsh comments on this topic.

34:00 I feel seen. Huhu. It's not a walk in the park when us filmmakers shoot these kinds of things. We're struggling not only physically (the heat, taking care of artists, running around back and forth, etc.), but also mentally and emotionally. We have to make sure everyone is okay, and in high spirits. Because if they're not okay, it'll 100% affect the shoot. Surely, the staff part in the ON mv really made sure the boys are taken care of in order to do well.
