BTS was growing internationally, but were having less of an impact in Korea at that time. Other fandoms did not understand that and so the sajegi rumors were fueled by lack of knowledge then by jealousy IMO. In 2015 I saw my first two kpop concerts... Big Bang and BTS in the US.

With "I Need You" the BU (Bangtan Universe) really started because from there a storyline is going through their music videos showing multiple versions of how it could have been if BTS wouldnt been together like they are. This is the era when I got into BTS. I saw them on a react channel singing Dope. I was instantly intrigued, so I looked up other videos. Here I am in 2022, so deep into the rabbit hole that there's no way out. No regrets. I can't begin to explain my love for them. I'm 68, so yeah, old. I've always loved music and have listened to a lot over these many years, but there was something about this group that pulled me in like no other. They are AMAZING.

Ahhh you have gotten to the HYYH era!! Just to preface, there is a fictional storyline (called the Bangtan Universe or "BU") that runs through the music videos like I NEED U, Run, HYYH On Stage: Prologue, Epilogue: Young Forever, and their solo songs Begin, Lie, Stigma, First Love, Awake, Mama, and Reflection. The members play fictional characters with their own names, but they all have very tragic backstories. It is a deep DEEP rabbit hole if you choose to go down it. In addition to the music videos, there are also books, games, a webtoon, and more that connects the very intricate storyline. It is so well done and the BU spans several eras past HYYH, going into WINGS and the Love Yourself era. I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this and have been looking forward to your weekend streams as well! Thank you for another great reaction!

When you see where they began and what they went through, it makes it even more amazing where they have ended up. I’m so thankful my neighbor’s daughter introduced me to them when she did. Their music has brought me out of many moments of sadness, frustration and just everyday doldrums. They can bring a smile like nothing and no one else with just their music. To me "I need you" was marketing genius to gain the worldwide foothold and a Middle finger to the establishments expectation & frame for a kpop artist who wins #1. School boy crooning in love. OK thats the stage but video. Real problems facing everyone(drugs, rage, depression, poverty, etc.) & finding an anchor in your friends. See who won. The girl group singing the cotton candy. They won where the audience was the 8th members of BTS w/ call response. In a few years BTS got their due. Cut to now. Grammys. Standing ovation for the best performance along w/ the likes of Pink's mid air singing live.(also never gets the respect deserved) who wins? Doja Cat singing the same expected stuff for now. Everyone knows BTS won & deserved it. Not only for the song or performance but it's creation to uplift & keep the entire world going through a pandemic (and make money during one- marketing genius). Well buckle up b/c when BTS gets their due it's epic. I see the new BTS Entertainment Awards. All inclusive panel & no country of origin or language origin categories. You rap. Rap award. You sing pop. Pop awards. Musicality, lyrics, presentation.. Period. At least once before the world ends please?

what you need to understand is a first win on a music show usually happens in debut year for most big 3 groups. most groups from small companies get it years later or never get it at all due to having smaller fandoms. bts didnt have a large fandom in korea at the time but they were bigger in other countries which is why their album sale were a lot.

When you watch I Need U, you have to watch the Original Version! There are 2 and one of them is cut differently to be more appropriate for television. MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE ORIGINAL to get the full experience and start the BU story off right. BTS enlistment is a bit confusing and a bit touchy of a subject. There has been talk about it for many years about BTS getting extensions or exemptions within Korea. The long story short is as the laws stand now, Jin will have to enlist by the end of the year, and the others will follow eventually. They each have to serve 18 months and then return.

Also understand that any of us outside of SK don't voice our opinions one way or the other because it isn't our government, not our laws so we stay away from articles like that until the boys or the company make an official statement. Even then... it is what it is and we respect their decision at the end of the day. A lot of us baby ARMY feel the same way. We often find ourselves wondering why we couldn't have found them sooner and been there for them sooner. To have gone through all of this with them. 💜💜

@@caitlink6846 I don't see why not, considering that South Korea is benefitting enormously from our international interest, both in prestige and in profits. Their government is more than willing to take advantage of BTS's global popularity and the loyalty of the fans- witness the various ambassadorial duties the guys've been given, the most recent being to try and get World EXPO to Busan. Isn't it odd, how none of the exempted classical musicians or Olympic athletes have been called on for that- only BTS, who apparently aren't worthy of exemption *guidelines* , let alone the thing itself? There's a price to being globally influential, and it's that the rest of the world feels free to comment, criticize, and offer opinions on domestic matters. If South Korea isn't willing to pay attention to international opinion, then they have no business trying to enlarge their international influence.

@ystrw woah woah woah. BTS may be an internationally popular group but enlistment is a strongly Korean cultural thing. They have their rules and their public opinion. Non-Koreans are completely outside that culture no matter how much we love BTS. You don't get to tell them to wear hanboks or not, this is the same. Korea's international relations and reputation may in some part be influence by BTS but that does not mean the rest of the world gets ANY SAY in their internal cultural aspects. That is not how this works. It's not how it works for other major influential countries and it's not how it works here, ESPECIALLY as just a normal citizen. You don't get to dictate what other countries do because they have an influential entity. NOPE. Not sure where you're from but most internationally influential countries don't give any cares to "international opinions" for their cultural decisions. They spread their influence as they see fit and SK can do the same. Also saying they "take advantage" is painting it in a terribly negative light when 1) the guys agree to be ambassadors and are free to not sign up to do it, and 2) they seem incredibly excited to participate. I'll rephrase. You can have whatever opinion you want but BTS (who've said they're willing to go) and SK have no obligation to acknowledge or listen to anyone outside their own country.

I Need You is the first video in the Bangtan Universe. You should watch it when you are ready to start that journey. There are great live performances of it with choreography if you want to check those out. If you haven't figured it out already, the songs lyrics don't have much to do with the actual music video. There is no girl in the video that is in the storyline, other than V's "sister" that he was trying to save. The importance of this award to them - It was their first Music Show Win. They worked so hard for it. And then any time they get any success, someone tries to bring them down. The headline "overnight sensation or cheaters", is ridiculous. It was 2015, and they debuted in 2013. The media really played that one, their was no way they could have done what they were saying. Their label was facing bankruptcy.

I don't know if the documentary mentions it anywhere but most of the bad stuff that happened to bts at this point were orchestrated by the industry especially the big 3 and their fans. They just could not digest the fact that a group could be this successful based on talent alone without any industry backing.

The enlisting topic has been there for quite some years now. It is mandatory in South Korea for 2 years so this is a huge topic that the government hasn´t been able to solve yet. They didn´t enlist earlier cause they had a huuuuuuge success and they were in the peak of their carreer, they contribute imenseley to the Korean economy and then the pandemic shut everyone for 2 years. Now the BTS men are turning into their 30´s and they have to solve it soon.

I love your reactions Luke because they're really genuine. Don't judge those reacting to I Need You in this eps too harshly, this mv was a drastic departure from BTS' previous mvs & people were genuinely shocked. (Please still react to that mv, we want to see it!) Also, I've read that Big Hit Entertainment was on the verge of bankruptcy at the point when this album came out. If I Need You had not been the success that it was, the company likely would've folded & BTS would've been finished. But, thankfully it was and the rest is history! Borahae 💜

im just saying this to let you know, others are being said many times anyways; the military issue is vague, according to law yes, Jin should be called upon they will go if they are as they have mentioned many times, but it was hinted by bighit that the members may go together if they are called upon, but there are also many discussions happening inside and outside the governement, so all we do is wait, and hope the best for Tannies' themselves, solo debut schedules and future group schedules since it is a pressure on the schedules too im sure, a big uncertainty

It's strange really, certain athletes, and classical musicians, get exemptions from military service, so the argument that certain K-Pop artists should also be exempt is valid. Especially since BTS have been awarded The Order Of Cultural Merit; were named Special Presidential Envoys (under the former President) for their THIRD speech at The United Nations; even performed Permission To Dance at the United Nations; and spoke at the White House, and had a face to face meeting with President Biden. What other K-Pop group can say that?💜

Hey Luke, just give in! BTS touch hearts and heal people and save lives (literarily), they are soo special and it's best to just get used to it. They deserve our love and thanks, their whole message of healing and positivity has changed lives and is so palpable in ways that sometimes we cannot put words to it. As another K-pop reactor (Korean, who is very well versed in the world as he grew up in the entertainment world in SK) says that what BTS and Army have achieved is very unusual from all of the rest, so when they touch our hearts as they do its for a good reason. I believe these negative things were said about BTS because those that lost to them were jealous and others couldn't believe a group with a small company could win! BTS may have come from a small company but their fan base (ARMY) is more committed to them than any other fan base I've seen among any type of artist (singer, actor, etc.). And remember, BTS had to build their fan base organically because the small company they were with didn't have the money for promotions. This is the hardest way to build a fan base but BTS did it and now they are the most famous group in the world. I guess bigger companies aren't necessarily better. So, be jealous, but never underestimate the power of the BTS Army!

I 100% recommend watching "I Need You" one day, the lyrics are so different from the storyline shown in the music video. It's the song that made me an Army, the story telling is amazing! Regarding enlistment, yes, it’s true. All Korean men are required to enlist before they turn 28 and serve ~2 years of active duty in the military. The law does exempt some men, such as Olympic medalists and some types of musicians, but notably does NOT exempt pop stars. They did revise the law a couple years ago that allowed "a pop culture artist who was recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to have greatly enhanced the image of Korea both within the nation and throughout the world" to postpone their enlistment until age 30 (international age). So far, BTS members are the only people who qualify for this postponement. There is a lot of controversy and discussion about whether the law should be revised further and allow a way for pop stars to be exempt or perform alternate service, but it is up to South Korea alone to decide. International fans have strong feelings about it and may want a change to be made but mandatory military service is a complex, layered topic and we are not in the position to fully understand the social and cultural issues around it. It is simply not our place to voice our opinions about it. Jin turns 30 in December. Suga turns 30 in March of 2023. RM and j-hope in 2024, Jimin and V in 2025, and JK in 2027.

I was recomending this mv for such a long time already!!! 18:57 it is very different, they uncover uncensored violence of destructive experiences of young human, teenager that is broken and is looking for espacing from pain. It’s my MOST favourite concept because of how much i relate to this from my past!🥺🛤 the clips you will see, the struggles ypu will see and even the location you will see in this mv is strong and it’s ALL i experienced! And it’s still the most beautiful moment for me because if how much it gaves me!🥺 i reccomend you 18+ version of this mv💕 thank you for your efort in this reaction!!

Oh I wish you weren't spoiled as to what happens in this MV - it's one of the biggest turning points for BTS but also the beginning of the Bangtan Universe. Here is where you see where the imagery with the fire (with Suga) and water (with Jimin) come from. All Korean men between 18 and 28 must enlist for 2 years in the military. BTS was granted an extension until 30 - this means Jin must enlist this year. There is a debate raging over giving the group an exemption due to what they have given to the economy and what they have done to spread Korean culture. However, it’s still ongoing. There are very few exemptions granted - Olympic medalists and classic musician. That’s it.

Hi Luke, as I watch you react to this, I can’t help but wonder if you understand now, why ARMY is so protective of BTS. It enrages me when people badmouth them , and don’t give them a chance because , 1- they are Korean 2-they are JUST another boy band 3- they’re overrated ( without even giving them a try) 4-they don’t speak english 5- couldn’t be bothered to read subtitles Etc….. It seems to me , that you get it now. I wish others would too. I’m not saying that everyone should like BTS, cause that would be too pretentious.
