If you're successful in life, you're bound to have haters who were jealous of you to the extent that it becomes hate. Most haters are insecure about themselves so they try to put you down by defaming or degrading you. The hate could also be a mixture of stereotypes, prejudice, xenophobia or racism that could also stem from being insecure. BTS even told their haters to love themselves in Cypher Pt. 4.

@ Krusty Krab yeah I agree that it’s a combination of everything you said, especially the racism. I think along with people being jealous there are also people uncomfortable and upset that an Asian group is dominating the pop music industry right now. Some guy from an American boy band actually had the audacity to say he thinks “there should always be a European or American group at the top.” So there’s a lot of nasty supremacist like thinking as well

You'd be surprised how much bs they've had to take and are still taking. But this is a great example of the depth of their songs. They don't all require explanation videos though. I have never come across a group with songs based on astronomy, whales, historical quotes, etc. and then using them to describe an entirely different subject. They constantly blow my mind. I highly recommend *Black Swan* which describes their fear of losing their passion for music and is based on a quote by famous dancer and choreographer Martha Graham (1894-1991): "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing and this first death is the more painful".

The hate was due to the fact that BTS were considered "upstarts" -- they challenged the establishment (i.e. broadcast firms, the "Big Three" entertainment studios) that were keeping the machinery running in Korea's k-pop industry -- by going to the more democratic platform: KZbin in ~2013. BTS hustled smartly: by going online as a response to the lack of opportunities to perform on mainstream broadcast TV shows and live events. The "hate" is from the fandoms of other k-pop groups (that were created by any of the "Big Three" studios). A basic understanding of the K-pop fandom culture might help you as you journey through the BTS discography (FYI, BTS albums are arranged by year on Spotify).

@@GetSidewaysReacts they do have a record label but back then it wasn't a big label so it was quite hard bc the Korean entertainment industry and media is monopolised by these 3 big companies (YG,SM & JYP) , it's hard to get onto shows to promote themselves also due to the lack of funds since the company was near bankruptcy at the time, and when they started to get popular people weren't having it, even until now like when they were the first asian artists to get nominated for Grammys , when they didn't win the media was so hostile towards them. "BTS failed to get the award" etc etc bc they didn't like that BTS didn't need the Korean media and the media cant profit from their global success

Well said.. im surprised that the backlash came from Korean entertainment industry itself (media, record labels, fandom from the big 3 companies, underground rappers, etc)..I have watched videos from some Korean artist/entertainers saying they should appreciate what BTS have contributed to their country instead of always saying trash about them..

Bighit - BTS’s record label (past and current) started off really small. Even some of their earlier videos they used their managers as extras and their manager’s cars because they didn’t have the budget. But now big hit has surpassed the “big 3 “ labels to be the billion dollar label they are today.

The fan wars in the K-pop industry is crazy. Certain fandoms will go all out to trash other artists who they think threaten the popularity of their idol group. They will even resort to physical violence against other fandom members.

researching BTS songs just adds to the allure for me. Studying their wordplays and cultural references that gets lost in translation is fun. Fans even read books like DEMIAN which has Nietzsche influence to better understand the WINGS album. MOTS is influenced by pysychologist Carl Jung.

I think you're mixing up Demian by Herman Hesse which had phylosophical concepts used for Wings with Map of the Soul by Carl Jung which had psychological concepts used for Map of the Soul. As far as I know, they are different, but I may be wrong..

BTS always got hate. Both in western and korean scene. In the west, its a mix of racism, stereotype and just cultural ignorance. BTS is termed as boyband and their fandom as crazy sex-crazed girls. 90% people don't even know what music they do and declare that they suck. Because bts wear stage makeup and maintain a gentle persona, you see a lot of homophobic slurs too. In korea they were hated because their company was too small and were mistreated a lot by media. Of course, now they are way bigger than the entire industry, so now they try to take credit for BTS's success. I recommend watching 'ON kinetic manifesto film' with captions on. It's a song that will give you a general idea about what they do musically.

hate towards bts is always rooted in underlying or sometimes obvious racism, xenophobia or homophobia (though bts members' sexualities are not known or anyone's business, they promote the notion of being yourself and loving yourself which some conservatives connect to homosexuality i guess.. considering bts wear stage makeup and whatever they like clothes wise, and have actively spoken up against toxic masculinity, which all in itself has nothing to do with homosexuality but is how conservatives automatically perceive it.. very odd). their discography being 95% in korean seems to scare some people who "don't understand what they're saying" even though translations exist, google is free and regardless, music is a universal language and you can understand the feeling of a song without the words, if you're willing to give it a chance. that deep rooted hatred for those values then seeps into "oh, i just hate them". also, they are a group of seven guys in a music group, so that automatically puts the "boyband" image on them, which has immediate negative connotations in a lot of people's minds (even though bts is far from any actual boybands and i wouldn't describe them as one either). the way the west promotes bts doesn't help dismiss that narrative, so a lot of people have preconceived notions of them based on one or two songs, or sometimes based on no music at all. and also, we as their fans are very prone to speaking out on any type of unfairness, negative treatment or non-sensical hate on bts or ourselves as their fans and don't just stay quiet on it, so people hate bts even more for it, somehow. because we don't let unprovoked insults and racist comments go. it's all very weird.

@kat While I agree that racism and xenophobia are some of the reasons they get so much hate abroad, they were being disrespected in their own country long before they started receiving any kind of significant attention in the west. Entitlement and jealousy seemed to be (and still is) the root of all the hate they got in Korea since the moment the debuted. Large companies who represented popular idol groups looked down on these kids from a small company, who were doing hip-hop and thinking they could complete at all, with the fans (and sometimes the companies themselves) sabotaging them and dragging their names through the mud trying to retain the status quo.

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ Not sure if anyone explained this yet but the references BTS made when they said “someone’s anger can cost someone their life” was likely in relation to the successful suicide attempts by a few Kpop idols a few years ago. Most notable and congruent to the themes of this song was the passing of former idol Sulli. It was WELL known in the community that Korean haters often attacked Sulli once she left her group for any and everything. It was unhinged and malicious hate that honestly went on for years without end. In the wake of her passing and all the evidence of her trying to combat those hate comments, a Korean law was drafted called the Sulli Act that would help everyone from celebrities to regular ppl to combat these ppl in the court of law. It’s actually very common for ppl (esp celebrities) to sue hate commenters. And with Korea’s unfortunate history of being a country with the highest physical and cyber bullying rates (esp amongst teens), it only made sense that their response to Sulli’s death would be to pass more laws to protect ppl from such an unfortunate fate.

the rappers who participated in the song are rm, suga (it's short for shooting guard, his favourite position in basketball) and j-hope. the 3 of them make up the rapline of bts. the other 4 members missing from this particular song are all vocalists: jungkook, jimin, v and jin.

He has talked about how he stopped playing basketball in high school because of his height, and how sad he was that he didn't get taller cause he wanted to play professional basketball. The accident came later, and he has talked about how he stopped working out and b-boying because of it, basketball he had already stopped playing seriously.

I think the hate comes from a lot of factors, but mainly: - jealousy (for BTS succeeding past other acts that had more resources and media power) - racism (they’re one of the only Asian acts in mainstream music) - homophobia (people don’t like how flamboyant they are and the fact that they wear make up) - xenophobia (people don’t like the fact that a non-English act that makes songs mainly in Korean is gaining popularity in the US and beating out their industry pushed pop artists) - fandom? (Some people think their fandom is toxic so they hate on the band for that. Logic isn’t logicing lol)

Even the K-pop soloist IU, who is considered 'Korean's little sister' put out an anti-hater song telling fans to not cross the line. That was followed by the song '8' (featuring Suga, coincidentally) where she talks directly to her past friends and colleagues who had been driven to suicide by online hate.

One of the big reasons that BTS started to get big in the first place was the fact that their music connected deeply with disenfranchised youth. Instead of manufactured, cookie cutter pop music - their music actually had something to say. It was unheard of in the kpop industry (and, to a degree, still is) to tackle some of the topics that BTS sang about. Things like income inequality, the wealth gap, and complete lack of social or financial mobility in South Korea. Watch DKDKTV's Bapsae Explained by a Korean to get an idea.

In their early years especially Bts rappers got hate for going from underground hiphop scene to this idol pop group. These days a lot of hate seems to come from people who dont like that this pop boyband gets so much fans and they say that it isnt music, it isnt in english, it is just some boyband without content and are angry that this kind of music gets appreciation. You can see that in few of the comments in your last video also. As most of my friends listen to heavy metal and rock, I have had to justify being a Bts fan. People want to think that pop music cant have meaning and if its a boyband, that certainly cant have anything deep to offer. They like to think that Bts being big is just cause crazy teenage fangirls. But many Bts armys, like me, are over 30years old and there is lots of male also. Also the toxic masculinity issue makes many hate Bts, cause they look good, wear makeup, often wear female clothesline clothes to show that genders really dont matter so much, if you like the clothes, wear what you like. At the same time these haters might listen to heavy metal music, where eyeliner, dark eyeshadow and makeup is also used, but they think Bts wearing make up is different, its concidered feminine and looks pretty and I guess its scary if you are this toxic masculine gatekeeper. This is why they're actually big. People can relate to their lyrics, just like both of you did. But other artists also can create this sense of relatability in their works but not everyone have this quality of genius lyrics writings like they have. I'm a fan for a long time but I still very much in awe whenever I dig deep into their song lyrics. It became so exciting that I don't think I will ever fell out of love for this group. Not only their works are masterpieces, they themselves are genuinely good people. This came from their old friends and the people in the industry that met them in real life.

As others have already mentioned, BTS is from a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves. I recommend We On. This song is a track in their debut album, and you can see how much emotion they put in it. For reference, most of the BTS members were teenagers at that time. It would have been hard to bear at such a young age. But like We On's lyrics, they did it. If you're interested in BTS' other MVs, I recommend.... Mic Drop (It's one of their billion-view music video.) Blood sweat & tears FIRE On kinetic manifesto film Save me→I'm fine Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo) All of their music videos provide English subtitles. :) Their lyrics are very deep and beautiful. ​ Or, I think it would be good to follow a story line. DNA: Joy of fateful love → Fake Love: Realizing that love was a lie → IDOL, The Truth Untold, Epiphany, Answer Love Myself: To love other people completely, you should love yourself first. These are included in Love Yourself Trilogy. They make a wide variety of genres of music like Hip-hop, Ballad, R&B, pop, EDM, etc. I'm sure there're quite a few of their 300 songs that suit your taste. :)

However… ALL members contribute to writing and producing. ALL BTS, except for Jung Kook have continued there college educations online influenced by Jin, the oldest who graduated. Yes… they are doing this while doing their BTS work which includes: Writing and producing songs, creating dances with choreographers, practicing for award shows, doing, doing reality TV- SOOP episodes, creating a animated character line or products BT21, and more! It’s in insane how creative a group of men are. Whatever one member lacks, the others step in the help teach. They are true brothers. Not faking it!! BTS started from a small company with no influence or power in the music industry. S Korean music industry adopted many of western standards such as 360 contracts (slave contracts), training programs (much like you see in ballet company to recruit and teach performers), image control (MGM film actors controlling the entire image ) Like the West, the top music companies reign supreme. The top 3 labels are known to force any trainers from small companies from appearing on TV show or performances making impossible any artist besides their own to succeed. When BTS started they were discriminated on by the music industry being from a low, independent label. S. Korea has a history of hierarchy- levels. The music industry forced BTS off shows, created fans wars, discount any achievements to through their connections. BTS were bullied. Bighit entertainment was already 56 million dollars in debt, but decided to pour everything they had into the boys. RM… young but extremely intelligent understood the this and help lead the members to work hard. Since BTSs debut in 2013, have have been fighting the S Korea music industry to be recognized. It the help of the Army, fans around the world who helped them shatter countless records. BTS was first popular outside S. Korea before making it it S Korea. This is why the Army is the 8th member of BTS and depicted by the Army bomb in BT21. This why the fan bases is so loyal. We been their through thick and thin. We seen their heard, humbleness, hard work and everything they had to give up to be BTS! It”s only in the last 3 years that the BTS members really made money for themselves. The Western media tries to portray BTS was manufactured or just pop, or image of feminine … similar bullshit is happening to them again when trying to break through in the western charts. All is untrue. When you learn more about BTS.. you will learn that media often portrays BTS negatively usually for their own personal clout or gain or motives. This is why they ARMY is so protective. We know the good ideology BTS is spreading. Plus, a minority artist singing in another language other than English, being the best in the world, helps all minorities trying to break into the music industry. This is about the Sewol disaster in S Korea Over 9000 artist for blacklisted for going creating art opposing the corruption in government. BTS and Bighit created the song and MV even though they knew it could kill their careers. Another reason why they have enemies in S Korea. Spring Day continues to be on music charts even though release years ago. The theme of corruption, struggles of the youth, money verse power… is also in Squid Games. I think UGH! was such a great introduction to BTS, since you did UGH! + UGH! explained. So many people have started now with Dynamite, Butter or Permission to Dance which is 3 newer and all english songs but also the furthest from showing BTS lyricism and core and it have taken reactors longer to get the understanding of BTS that you now have. Black Swan is a great song with all members (click the CC button when you watch the music video and you will get eng subtitles), the song ON and the Kinetic manifesto version of the music video is great too, really cool video filmed in LA. I also like the song Baepsae, it has no music video but there is an explained video to Baepsae too by DKDKTV. Live performances of Your Eyes Tell is beautiful and really show off their vocals and you get to see the diversity of the rappers too when they rap to a slower song. But BTS have around 300 songs and none of them are bad. And when you react to BTS music videos don't cut out parts and let them play out fully even after the music stops cause it's often stuff at the very last sec. They do not block music video reactions so we are used to see full video reactions and do not like if parts are cut out. Hope this helps :)

BTS' songs are so much deeper and sophisticated than your average pop or rap group. They have things to say and they say them really cleverly and artfully. DKDKTV's Explained by a Korean videos are great resources for understanding the depths of BTS songs that non-Korean speakers miss. As for the hate they received, OMG, there are many videos about that and you should definitely react to them because their rags-to-riches struggle to overcome all obstacles is SO MUCH apart of who they are as a group. You can't fully understand BTS until you learn of their hardships in their early days.

I was one of those people that didn't give bts the time of day, I didn't hate them , I just never listened to them. Then one day a few months ago I watched them do ill be missing you by p diddy , faith Evans and sting and I was amazed and very surprised . So I set out to learn all about them and I was even more amazed. Im glad you are learning about them but to really get to know them and how they transformed to the biggest band in the world watch some mini documentaries and get to learn where they came from and all their personalities, their hardships . Anyway happy listening to the phenomenon that is BTS there is so much more to them then just their videos. Have fun guys and welcome to the BTS world.

Thank you for making effort to understand the meaning behind this song! Most of their songs carry a message: sometimes the goal of their music is to bring comfort and healing both to them and their fans (you definitely should check their album "BE" released in the middle of a pandemic), many times they comment on social problems or refer to very specific situations (for those I would recommend Baepsae and Spring Day), but what I love about their music is how they tell a story through their albums. If you look at their discography in chronological order you will see an amazing story of growing up and discovering yourself, finding your own value in the world. I hope you will get interested enough to dig into it in more details :) Have fun! Remember to check some of their dance practices and some live performances as well :)

I saw your other video wherein you were very surprised that Ugh turned out to be a rap song. I thought at the time maybe you guys were not into rap but more on pop and just happened to start on the wrong song. Because BTS are not just not rap, hip hop. They have very diverse musical styles...and it works! Most artists cannot pull that off but they have. Anyway, seeing your reaction to the song explanation, I no longer think you made a mistake in choosing UGH as the first BTS song to react to. Since you guys related to the message, its perfect for you. People always discover BTS when they need it the most and just at the right time in their lives. In any case, you may want to check out their more recent songs which are in English. They have had 5 successive Billboard #1 singles, so maybe you want to check those out first as 4 of them are in English. More pop, 1 reggae (collaboration with Jason Derulo) and 1 pop rock, collaboration with Coldplay. As great as the English songs are, its the Korean songs which are deep and has all different styles. So the question is - what type of music are you more into and we could give suggestions based on that.

ARMY is the BTS fandom. We are probably the most diverse fandom in the world. Age, gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, etc... it doesn't matter. I (pre-covid) used to do a lot of travelling, and have had meet-ups with other Army in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, France, UK, and Finland. It's pretty amazing and exhilarating, to be able to go almost anywhere in the world, and arrange a meeting with someone who shares your interests. I personally know Army ranging in age from 13 to 70. I'm 62 from Texas.

Lyricism of BTS is always mindblowing 🔥🤯 I am a BTS ARMY for years, and I havent finished reading all the theories/explanation of their songs (they do have 200++ songs). But its a big difference after reading the english translation & explanation about it. Hearing that song again after that is a whole new experience. Their lyrics imagery is also great - one of my favorite is Whalien 52 or The Truth Untold.

Kudos for diving right into this guys, you struck our ARMY heartstrings. Yes, BTS has always received hate from conception. Hate from underground rap for becoming idols for “selling out,” hate from the idol community, fans and bigger companies (the marlins JYP, YM, SM) for first trying and then succeeding at a game they weren’t really “permitted” or expected to play, very unconventional idols. There’s lots of gate keeping in korea around the idol scene, you wouldn’t imagine, different culture with deeply respected hierarchies. BTS still deals with lack of recognition in Korea, believe it or not they were bigger internationally before they really blew up around 2016-2017. I’d absolutely check out Ddaeng next if you like this, and the explanation is awesome. The song and beats are top tier anyways. Daechwita by Agust D too (suga of BTS), lots of symbolism in that MV. It’s a combination of both, company has in-house producers, all BTS members can write lyrics, some members compose and produce their own parts or the whole song. Some producers and artists pitch their compositions to BTS and BTS can either accept them as a whole with not much changes or change lyrics/add some parts.

Do IDOL some time soon after UGH. Also addresses haters but concludes self Love and being proud of one self and not to take haters SERIOUSLY. There is also "a korean explains" vid for IDOL that reveals hidden (cultural) symbolism which is interesting. MIC DROP also addresses haters in a more direct way in a "once and for all" kinda way. One of my favourites (There are so many... 😅). SPRING DAY and all theories around the song and mv is not to be missed. Probably one of the most popular songs of them all, still on one top100 list in Korea since 4 yrs or something... Just beautiful. Oh and The BU (bts universe/save me) of course... 💜

There are 3 videos that will give you a very well round and clear understanding of them. 1. A Beautiful Life Goes On-A Story of BTS, the 2021 version on the channel Asian Theory. 2. Who Is BTS, by XCELESTE 3. BTS Hardships, the 2021 version, also by XCELESTE. One thing you have to understand is the Korean Music Industry had always been made up of what was known as The Big Three. They are companies that had the most influence in the industry. The Big 3 also had partnerships in media, like the news, TV shows, etc. So basically, if your group was not created by one of these Big 3, your chances of success was very slim. When BTS came on the scene, groups from the Big 3 were dominating the industry. They tried every way possible to knock them down.

I loved both this video and the reaction to the song, thank you for posting them. I think the BTS FESTA ROOM LIVE 2021 that most Armys are recommending in the comments is definitely a good idea after UGH, it will introduce you smoothly to the rest of the members and the variety of genres they make. Also, if you liked UGH, I think you could like the official MV for "Mic Drop" (it's a Steve Aoki Remix of one of their rap song but with all 7 members in it) and you will probably love the rap line solo projects too. All 3 of them are incredibly productive producers/lyricists/composers and they use their solo albums as an opportunity to showcase their individual styles - I would recommend checking out "Joke" by RM, "Daechwita" by Suga and "Chicken Noodle Soup" by j-hope. The vocal line also has their own solos and they are absolute pieces of art as well. Another thing that is different from your average boyband is that all 7 members bring something essential to the table. There are ALL the Beyonce or the Justin Timberlake of the group. Their company CEO Bang PD's approach to raising talent is very different than what is normally done anywhere else both in the West and the East. He encourages all members to create their own music and make it relevant to their own lives and stories, he considers music to be something similar to therapy both for the artist and the listener (in fact the old BigHit logo literally said "music for healing", ultimately what this means is that he wants the boys to be sincere about their art and talk about real issues (whether personal or societal issues) that affect them so that the audience will be able to resonate on both emotional and intellectual level and that's why Army is so invested. Plus, they are some real crackheads and funny AF, they really know how to enjoy life and it shows, there's countless of crack videos you can check out for that.
