Dont forget to reduce 1-2 years when they mention their age. Korean age system calculate newborn baby as 1 y.o, then add another 1 year after new year. Another note. The creator try to put the differences between " a usual KPOP" with BTS. So when she put the clips regarding the normal KPOP system, she will also put BTS clips doing the opposite to show the differences 💜

@@septasoareousrex one way to look at it is not their “ages”, but their “years”. When they’re born, they’re experiencing their first year, hence their age is one. When the new year comes, they’re experiencing their second year, so their age is two. That’s how I’ve come to see it, and it makes a lot of sense in my brain.

@@septasoareousrex I struggled with figuring out ages until I heard someone explain it like this: for Hobi and Yoongi, subtract 1 year from what age they say they are to get their international age, and for everyone else subtract 2. Since Hobi’s birthday is in February and Yoongi’s is in March, for the majority of the year, that will be correct. Everyone else’s birthdays are towards the end of the year, and since everyone turns a year older on Jan 1st, that means they have the additional extra year-of-age for most of the calendar year (which is why Tae was considered 2 years old as a 2 DAY old infant). It’ll obvs change depending on what month it currently is, but as a rough guide, I found that super helpful!

Part of the reason why Jin had a bit of trouble being away from his family was because he was the youngest in his family. In BTS, however, he was the oldest. Because of their culture in Korea, being the oldest puts a lot of pressure on Jin, although he rarely acts like the oldest. Older or more experienced people are expected to guide, protect, and care for their younger group or team mates in a lot of ways. When someone is being introduced to someone that they will be working with in the future, the initial introduction is usually concluded with "Please take care of me." It's also expected that the oldest or highest ranked in a group will pay for everyone else's meals when they have a team meeting in a restaurant. There are other aspects of the position as oldest, but these are a few of the expectations. Jin wasn't used to being the oldest. It was quite a change going from being the one taken care of to being the one who is supposed to take care of everyone else. Jin didn't ignore those responsibilities and expectations, but he wasn't really strict about that aspect of the group dynamic, either. The guys frequently joke that he acts like the group's youngest a lot of times.

About people seeing kpop stars as "gods and goddesses" and about bts seeming genuine- bts actually is the first kpop group to connect with fans like that through social media, kpop groups didnt do that before, they went on korean variety shows, but since bts wasnt invited cause they were small they connected with fans through vlogs on youtube, twitter, created their own variety show, etc and now all groups seeing bts success in it do the same, so its now preferable for fans to see groups not superior but relatable

At the time the whole log thing was a unique thing to BTS as they had no connections so they took to KZbin and their online fan cafe to connect with people. This along with the BANGTANG BOMBS 💣 (aka their behind the scene clips) was a very rare and uncommon thing in Kpop, but nowadays it’s very common to see. I definitely agree with the point you guys made about the comment on Kpop idols being like “gods so high above you that you can’t help but worship them;” you know a part of what made BTS special is that they felt so real and in a sense relatable (as they were just young scared kids trying to figure out life and do what they love) and we got to see their humanity (humanness/relatability) through such video’s. BTS has always been honest and real throughout their career about their journey; they not only have shared with us the happier times they have experienced they have also been honest and transparent about the hardships and internal struggles they have faced both as a group and as individuals. In regards to the whole comment about beauty standards in Korea and the Kpop industry, they can go for both girls and boys. Koreans are “expected” to have nice slim bodies, pale skin, double eyelids, noses with a high nose bridge, a sharp jawline, etc. You might even hear instances where agencies encourage both male and female trainees to get plastic surgery, lighten their skin, etc., to “make themselves look better” and “appeal to the general public.” Jimin in particular has talked about his bad relationship with food, admitting that he would work out constantly (an unhealthy amount) and would only eat like an apple every couple of days (Note: upon debuting the Korean general public aka the k-netizens -who are sometimes harsh and very judgmental at times, as they unrealistically expect idols to be perfect from head to toe 24/7- would often say Jimin was fat as he had a round face and chubby cheeks, and as one can assume that got to him). Nowadays though he seems to be healthy and in a better mindset prioritizing his health over anything else. I agree again with what you said about the whole thing about not justifying the terrible things that go on in Kpop (BTS have in the past expressed some of the problems found within the Kpop industry, and in fact, most recently addressed the fact that the industry doesn’t allow people to grow and develop in their Festa dinner video this year); However, I also think it is quite harmful to cling onto such titles like “the dark side of Kpop” which can contribute to this bad and sometimes harmful stereotype about Kpop when the subject isn’t as one-dimensional and shouldn’t be simplified into only one title as the western media has been doing for the last couple of years. The second episode dives into this concept a little more, so I won’t spoil it too much for you. Excited for you to watch this series as it’s a great one! One thing that rise of bangtan shows is that BTS took a different direction then other groups. The company gave them more freedom and they wrote and still writing their own lyrics. I absolutely love the rise of bangtan. It's getting better and BETTER with each chapter. I hope you will react to chapter 2 any time soon :)

The company actually never forced them on strict diet but Jimin did the one meal in 10 days diet in 2015 to lose his chubby face. But now they are all eating well and are going to gym and bulking up

what's interesting about the first few chapters of this series is that they take a look at kpop and how it works in order to show some similarities but also all of the ways in which bts diverts from kpop - for example, they talk about people worshipping idols and listening to kpop for the catchy music - but bts is known to be down to earth and as a group who has always promoted being on the same ground as the fans, and also for making artistic music, not necessarily just catchy but with great values in it. also, they showed clips of kpop idols getting overworked by their companies, and the cut-throat atmosphere, and then straight after, a clip of bang pd - the ceo of bighit - saying he never put mandatory high worktime limits for them while working - bts have always just been workaholics and perfectionists themselves from day one - they still are in a sense, even with all their success. another noticeable difference is the dieting - idols talking about rough diet limitations set by the company and then you have clips of bts eating well at that grandma's restaurant and eating watermelon in the middle of practice (they did diet but most of the diets were self imposed by themselves as well because of the pressure they felt)... so yeah, pay attention to all the differences: sometimes they will show clips of kpop idols doing something and then bts doing the opposite back to back for the effect too. bts were the ones to popularize vlogs in the industry. they were also the ones to popularize making their own shows (though bts needed to back then because regular shows mistreated them or didn't invite them, idols today just do it for more promo). a big thing bts also brought in was companies trying to market more idols as self-made musicians and down to earth people than ever before, because they all want the "next bts" and saw that genuineness can work (though these people now just push it so...) - as you could see in the beginning, most idols were and some still are marketed as superhuman or above us peasants.

"Korea" is a rich culture that has existed for more than 5 thousands years. There have been several dynasty changes but our last, Joseon Dynasty, lasted for 500 years (1392-1897) before it was annexed by the japanese starting from the late 1800s. Sandwiched between two very ruthless and war mongering nations, china and japan, we have had to endure and survive hundreds of invasions (they took turns, the current and sudden Russian invasion of Ukraine is an example of what Korea had to overcome hundreds of times over). While these two engaged in warfare, we were a peaceful nation that put education as a priority and ultimately is what has brought us to this point today. Unlike other wealthy nations, in our long history, we have never invaded nor stolen from another (this includes North Korea). the criminal japanese occupation lasted for 40 devastating years and officially between 1910-1945. Many around the world do not know about these decades of carnage where our land and people were raped, murdered and stolen from. After liberation (japan became delusional and attempted to invade the US at Pearl Harbour, two atomic bombs were finally dropped and Korea was liberated). Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The Americans, Chinese and the Russians decided to play their war games on our soil which they called the Korean War. This basically killed and obliterated what little the japanese did not destroy or steal. We became one of the poorest nations in the world. After a few years of more carnage, Korea started their decades fight for democracy. The criminal japanese occupation and geo-political war may have set us back for 40 years, but due to our relentless will not to be vanquished but to overcome, we have risen from the ashes to become the 10th largest economy in the world. Please learn more about our rich culture and never disappointing history of survival. fun fact: the world's oldest extant book is the "Jikji" (1377 Goryeo Dynasty), a Korean book printed on a Korean invention (moveable metal-type print press). They give us fan songs and free songs on soundcloud every now and then but mostly during Festa or BTS anniversary. Last Festa, Jungkook uploaded on yt a song he made for armys caled My You. since i am not a kpop fan i only like BTS, it´s hard to know how other kpop fans feel about their idols. but i can´t imagine it goes deeper than what we feel about BTS. we think of them as close friends or family instead of icons. you will never turn your back on a friend or child. but you will stop liking idols over time. i think that´s why bts are so popular compared to others. so if anyone know how it feels being fans of others please let me know

Basically it feels like having a favorite character in a tv show because of how much they feed people's fantasies. The best way to describe it is by just using the word "vibe" when it comes to picking who you do or don't want to follow; a lot of other Kpop artists have a good "vibe" but not necessarily a *genuine* one, because of how much other companies can pressure them, so the audience may not notice what they're specifically feeling but they loose interest eventually because it is subconciously strenuous to follow the journey of someone who is stressed out or tired. Being a Kpop artist is truly just a job for a lot of them, but there are very few times where singular members (or even just unpopular bands) genuinely *enjoy* what they are doing like our boys do. They, a lot of the time, don't have a sense of loyalty to each other that isn't connected with the poor artist feeling some kind of obligation to act a certain way, mostly out of fear that people won't like them or that they'll be kicked out of their group. The best examples of other Kpop artists who give me the same feeling of genuine love for themselves and their work would be HyunA, Dawn, Bang Chan(Stray Kids), Jackson(Got7), Jisoo(Balckpink), Changbin(Stray Kids), ATEEZ, Han(Stray Kids), SOMI, Mamamoo, AleXa(the only artist I stan as much as BTS), Xuimin(EXO), Soobin(TXT) and PSY(obviously). Keep in mind the I am not an avid follower of many of these people, but these are the people that have never felt like they are nervous with being awkward on camera or standing up for themselves if they believe in something; they are also the ones who seem (to me) like the most genuinely kind people as well.

Multistan here. It does feel that way for most of my groups, it feels like being a good friend. The flip side of that, though, when you're a multi, is that it balances out your attention on each group and you back off from obsessive behaviour. Just my experience.

Especially nowadays, and maybe that is due to the influence of bts and companies finally being convinced that letting their artists be genuine works. The freedom that BTS had with their music was unique to them because other kpop groups are controlled by their labels when it comes to producing and releasing music. The vlogs are also unique to them that's why fans feel connected in a personal way with them. Yeah everytime i see this party i wanna tell people, have you actually seen what goes on behind the scenes in American performing at schools like Juilliard? Or any serious ballet school for that matter? The torture these kids put themselves into and the sacrifice is really crazy and probably with even less guarantee of success after finishing it if they didn’t get picked up by any of the major dance companies. At least in kpop agencies, if you do finish, you are guaranteed to be promoted by the company that already trained you.

Thank you for adding the context there. It is definitely a worldwide system used in sports, dance, and modeling, etc. We agree that it is not just present in KPop. Septa kept thinking of it as more like a boot camp. Where they tear you down so they can rebuild you starting at the basics and growing from there. So for Korean age you are considered 1 when you are born and then everyone turns a year older on New Years. So take V for example, he was born December 30, 1995 so 2 days later on January 1, 1996 he turned 2 years old but was really only 2 days old. So when they state their ages they are actually 1-2 years younger in international age. BTS international ages when they debuted Jin- 20, Suga- 20, J-Hope 19, RM- 18, Jimin- 17, V- 17, Jungkook 15.

One of the things that attracted me more of kpop was the personality of the idols. That we as fans had a lot more content and shows where we see them play and everything but BTS really took that to another level. While an idol is meant to be that, an idol, and still have this unreachable image, BTS feels like my friends who happen to be artist. There is always and should be limitations on how much they share about their personal lives but in all they share and say you can feel their honesty and realness. That's why we care for them as people before anything else.

This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)* I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company. I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)* Now plz understand this 1st episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

well explained, fellow Army. BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. So BH let the boys have control over music, express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. They succeed without any help , and against the system witch try to destroy them. They created another way to be successfull, and the most unusual codependant relationship between a group, a compagny and a fandom that had ever exist : Bangtan, Big Hit and Army, like a family. The most incredible underdog success story of the whole musical industry !

Jungkook was only 13 (15 when they debuted) when he joined Big Hit and started training. He had to leave his family in Busan to train in Seoul. So naturally at that age, he always felt homesick and missed his mom and family a lot.

I was late to the premiere so I stayed out of the chat, but I have so many thing I want to say. First you 2 are so cute and supportive of each other, I love it. Second the Kpop industry is very competitive, but Korean society is the same way so there are expectations that are a bit more harsh in the public eye. Cancel culture here is lax in comparison, when that guy says these idols are worshiped they basically have to live perfect lives, one tiny mistake could ruin a career. Management companies have a large hold on how their artists live so the brand could be protected. Bang Sihyuk said he didn't put heavy restrictions on the BTS members but there were some- they had talked about hiding food from their managers, and of course they had schedules for practice they had to stick to, and many things kept them from having time off to see their families. BTS seemed to not have it as bad as groups from other companies but they made sure they put in the work and effort that was necessary and they still do. There was a former BTS trainee who was doing an interview not too long ago, he said early on RM spoke to all the trainees, because they didn't know who would eventually make the team they shouldn't compete with each other but instead help eachother. I think that was a good foundation for the bond that the members have now.

Soare, to your point about not feeling BTS as being 'so far above' their fans - you're absolutely right. RM has even addressed this in his comments during a concert back in 2017. He told ARMYs that as they've watched BTS grow internationally, ARMY may see themselves as being led by BTS 'up the mountain' of popularity....but RM said that he and the other members, instead, see ARMY holding hands *with* BTS and *walking up the mountain together*. I thought that was really beautiful and highlighted exactly why we all almost feel like a part of the group, partners in their journey, instead of just fans watching idols from far away

the video blogs were kinda unique to them! they definitely were the most influential group to do that type of promoting and let's say it's also cause they had to, they didn't have the media help as other groups so they thought doing those videos would help them, and obviously, it worked, and indeed to this day you can see how other groups try to use that strategic cause the saw how it worked with bts, but its really a bts thing, I would say, it was part of what made them unique and therefore their story.

Just vlogging isn't the magic with BTS, it's that they were so honest and open with their fans, and that really made a difference. I don't see other groups opening up and being so honest with their fans. I don't think other agencies would allow that level of honesty, even though we know there are a lot of things that BTS couldn't talk about, and still don't to this day. What they do share with us is always genuine and sincere.

These personal vlogs started a grassroots fan following that grew organically into the BTSARMY of today. It really is fundamentally about the members and who they are as individuals and as BTS. If you think about it - all this content was only released in Korean and international ARMYs had to wait for KARMYs to translate for us. So the fact that every year since debut they grew exponentially is a miracle. I joined the fandom in 2018 when BTS was already global but still using fan cafe - so I had to wait days for their content to be translated . The fact that we the BTSARMY are so invested is because of these 7 precious individuals and the incredible content they create as individuals artists and as Bangtan Sonyeondon 💜

And the good thing is that you'll get SO many tastes of dif songs from all the different eras as the series go on. You can keep notes of stuff you like and want to check out. I think it's not so much spoilers as it is little tastes. Highly HIGHLY recommend keeping going with this series and then checking out songs you like that you hear as you go. you reacting to this series and diving into the bts rabbit hole really makes me happy! thank you for being open to discovering bts and their music. i love your honest commentaries so i’m looking forward to more videos with the following episodes. i’m really excited to follow your journey to falling in love with bts and being attached to them, i can already see the signs this early because i see how you adore their real personalities. regarding the topic of vlogging and trying to build a fanbase through social media before debut, it has definitely been kinda like a strategy for idols and companies especially these past few years. but during bts’ generation, that strategy is not really that widely used(? is that the right term?lol). most of the groups and companies at that time relied mostly on mainstream media to promote there artists that’s why most of the groups that are successful during bts’ early years are groups that are from big companies. because only big companies have the capacity and influence/ clout with the mainstream media companies. since bts and big hit don’t have that, they used social media to show the members’ personalities and build that real connection with the fans through constantly communicating with them. their vlogging/ filming behind the scenes are also on another level compared to other groups back then. they show so much of their lives off stage, their work process or just their personal life in general. this is also i think the reason why people really connect to them, there’s so much that we know about them, about their days, their stories, so much to talk about because there’s so much content to watch. in my opinion, bts really are the ones that changed the game with their effective use of social media. (this is also the reason why they receive hate from the big mainstream media companies and labels) nowadays, since bts has proved how much that “strategy” worked for them, more companies and idols try to make use of social media and posting vlogs/content to build their fanbase.

I haven't really watched this series myself so idk when they include it or not, they also released music before debut like lots of covers and even unofficial sort of music videos and even original stuff like sampling beats and adding their own lyric and stuff so that was also how people got to know them and like them and these blogs as well .they also interacted and posted on twitter...idk about other k-pop groups but this was definitely not common practice..and i don't think most or if any had Twitter accounts coz lots of groups started to make Twitter accounts very recently (in like 2017 and stuff for many) So the Twitter interactions were definitely kinda unique to BTS as far as i know..they posted about tidbits from their daily life and interacted with people and it was really funny too like i look at those sometimes and it was hilarious..they were just very likable

The reason these groups also got Twitter in the year of 2017 is because BTS won the BBMAs of top social artist in 2017 which was about Twitter engagement, without BTS winning this award, most of these groups wouldn't have a Twitter account. It's especially interesting because a lot of these groups debuted years before, some even before BTS and still also got their first Twitter accounts only in 2017. The top 10 social artists went from BTS at N1 and others being Justin Bieber, Ariana grande, lady gaga etc in 2017 to BTS at N1 and a whole kpop industry lineup changing in the entire top 10. BTS top social artist is what paved the way for kpop's social media use.

Exactly! That comment (around 14minutes) about celebrities being so far above you and worshiping them…I don’t feel that way about BTS. Like you said, they are more like friends to root for. They have always lead with their sincerity and authenticity which is what connected them so closely with their fans. Kpop training systems have a lot of systemic issues, not necessarily better or worse than the western music industries, just very different. The vlogs/blogs were fairly unique to BTS at the time, these days a lot of idols do livestreams. I remember the editor of TROB Aneesa did mention she wanted to contrast the typical idol (presenting as perfect, high above you) at the time vs BTS who were literally very real likeable young men (country bumpkins according another Korean person who watched this). Aneesa’s storytelling gets better as the episodes continue actually and you’ll see what she wants to get across clearer too, it’s really cool. Big Hit/Bangtan had their share of body image struggles back then too, you’ll see more of it I think. We never truly see everything that goes on behind the scenes, but I’m sure there was a lot of pressure to look a certain way. We know for a fact that there was definitely media/public criticism about their looks esp during early days of their career. And hints of it even within the company. But it’s also a Korean society thing, not only a kpop idol thing. It’s something that definitely deserves a conversation. Looking forward to you guys watching more episodes. It’s kind of cool to have something like this from a not official source. Aneesa has done such an amazing job. The bbygang channel has a bunch of video essays on kpop history, discussions and rebuttals to the dark side of kpop, bts vs kpop etc if you’re ever interested. I really enjoyed those and Elliot actually does & often cites research for his videos.

everytime i see the part where they talk about “the dark side of kpop” i kinda feel it’s a bit unfair singling them out because have you actually seen what goes on behind the scenes in American performing at schools like Juilliard? Or any serious ballet school for that matter? The torture these kids put themselves into and the sacrifice is really crazy and probably with even less guarantee of success after finishing it if they didn’t get picked up by any of the major dance companies. At least in kpop agencies, if you do finish, you are guaranteed a chance at a career and would to be promoted by the company that already trained you.

feel like rewatching the rise of bangtan & will do it with you 💜💜 still find it such a miracle for the 7 boys be able to stay so close for years! so many things can went the other way & not worked...Still blow my mind too how humble they are with no sign of arrogance at all! Think about it - Suga RM were good in rapping /music production, but they had to accept Hobi the 3rd member who's an amazing dancer. They must felt their pride being stepped on when they were told they are no longer just a hip hop group but had to get their dancing skill up to Hobi's level.... yet we we can see is pure love, acceptance & pride of all the boys. Vice versa, Hobi didn't see him as better because he can dance, he was just so keen to learn rapping. JK got 7 agencies recognized his potentials but he never bragged about it, but continued to admire & learn from the others. Jin being the eldest yet never once used his authority over the youngers. Tae said in an interview he thought he's dream was just be a trainee not any more, yet he didn't stop but just kept growing. Jimin's a top student & great contemporary dancer yet had never satisfied of his work but always praise the members first... How much more humbleness we can get from 7 young boys

What I liked more from BTS is that they never changed, the way they talk with and about ARMY, it's still the same. Like i dont know any other artist that constantly talk to their fans, have a little chat, responds to posts, celebrates with fans online. The whole point of showing the strict side of kpop industry here is only to show how Bang PD treated BTS differently. Please don't get confused regarding the editing because some people misinterpret it . Bang Pd wanted to change the system so although initially BTS had some rules, he gave them waaaay more freedom than any other agency ever did at the time which is one of the reasons why BTS grew into a group like no other!

There are different generation K-pop bands. I’m partial to 2nd and 3rd. I like Shinee and Mamamoo, but there are so many! To be honest the kpop industry formula works up to a certain point. The difference between sports and kpop and the music Industry, is kpop realies on creative processes to create music, dance and content. Creativity needs to have open space and flow. Constricting your creativity to much, you kill it! Listening to your reaction kind of makes me wonder if this is part of the reason many groups only last for a couple of years. 🤔

hmm, I’d say it’s only a small part of the reason why. since many idol groups often aren’t intimately involved in their creative processes, I wouldn’t say that creative burnout is a big cause of disbandment. a lot of music production and writing is outsourced to different producers and composers. I’d say the major cause of disbandment for many groups is either there’ll be members who want to branch off solo or to other parts of the entertainment industry (acting, etc) or its just complete exhaustion from their insanely busy lives as idols. by the time that 7 year contract comes to an end, most groups have either already passed their golden age of popularity and are on the road to irrelevancy or members of the group are too exhausted from the lifestyle to want to carry on. you also see cases where a group will disband after their contract ends and individual members will move into agencies that give them the creative freedom that they actually need to continue pursuing a career in the music industry. companies themselves will also choose to disband certain groups if they’re not raking in enough profit. but yes, the idol industry just does not allow creativity to flow, the idol system itself is a recipe for creative burnout. namjoon talks about this in their recent festa dinner as well

@@smatias83 yep yep, military enlistment as well is a big factor for male idol groups. yes, it’s incredibly rare! honestly, BTS are such a rare case in the idol industry. and I’m confident they’ll keep going for many more years ^_^ I’m glad it was brought up too, imo the industry is in need of an overhaul and massive changes in its structure. it does some things right but is not a feasible way for artists to live.

I believe in 2012 or 2013, the music shows actually had to make an announcement that they were capping how many groups were debuting each week to 100 groups. There were so many groups trying to debut that the music shows did not have any space for them. Many of the smaller companies complained because they knew their groups would not be able to get spot since the bigger companies at that time had more influence.

Some dynamics was a big change for members. Jin and Suga were the babies of their families and all of a sudden they are now the older brothers to five siblings. JHope was given responsibility of the dance line. Namjoon is the middle child of the group and he was their leader. Jimin was the elder of the maknae line but had the least amount of training. V was hidden so he couldn't tell anyone he was actually debuting. Jungkook was the youngest but was main singer and center. It was a lot for them. Also remember with the ages you are hearing take off at least one to two years. International age when they debuted: Jin was 20, Suga was 20, JHope was 19, RM was 18, Jimin was 17, V was 17 and JK was 15. When Jungkook was sad after graduating it was because he missed his mom and dad. He was the baby of his family so he had never been separated from them.

One thing Jin didn't mention here(and I haven't watched it for myself), is that while he's trying to figure out how to take care of himself, he's now the eldest brother to 6 others that he needs to care for as well. While he was the youngest in his family, so yes he was the one being cared for.

I will say, as harsh as trainee and idol life is, I do think it's slowly but surely getting better as time goes on. I feel like on average, idols and trainees are treated far better now than they were a decade ago. The biggest improvement imo has been companies putting more of a focus on maintaining the mental health of their idols

i love your bts reactions, i have been following since you started your bangtan journey. funny you mentioned the "no cover" show, as my son's band is on the first season. it was filmed about a year and a half ago btw. anyway, it does suck how much you need to be established in order to get any interest from labels. i will tell you since my son's band started, they have had many offers but they've been abysmal, because they don't have a huge social media following. how are you supposed to get that when no one knows you? you have to be good and lucky at sm, and when you're 5 REALLY young (now only 4 ) kids in school who just want to make music, it's a harsh reality to face and work that has to be done - instagram, tiktoks, facebook daily... but i also understand that the industry is different now. you don't need a label to make and release music, and companies don't make money like they used to, so to invest so much money up front into a band is risky. anyway, wonder if you can guess which band they are? :) they've also grown so much in over a year, being so young and talented. looking forward to watching more RoB episodes with you two. it is such a well done series and let's you see bangtan's story from their own words, pretty much as it happened.

I loved the dairies and music. The info about Korea and the training. Most of the members spent 2-3 years together training as you saw mentioned in the doc. Jimin spent 6-8 months only training before debut. Yet, they love him dearly. They would not be BTS without all the members u know. This is a great doc. I love learning new info about BTS. The rise of Bangtan is such a well made docuseries! When BTS started it was not common for other Kpop idols to film log like this but since they were from a small company who had no connection in the industry they filmed logs like that to connect with fans! I think in a way it really helped them especially with gaining a huge international fan base. Before BTS I've tried to listen to other kpop group and I might like a few songs here and there I just feel a genuine connection when I listen to BTS. The fact that Big Hit wants BTS to just be themselves instead of being perfect looking all the time is definitely a very different concept at that time for K pop idol!

BTS is humble, loved and respected but what I think makes them different from all these all Kpop groups, is their die hard dedication to their craft. They are the only group who took the chance to address all their issues in their time of upcoming. Topics that other groups would never touch. Truth about youth, depression, social injustice, self love, anti bullying, etc... I believe this may be the reason why our boys have so many haters. When you dare to take this risk of talking about these sensitive topics, comes with alot of negative feedback. Yet, it's the truth where some can relate and would make them stan them for their voice that others can not put out but support since it is only natural to support others who can be a voice for them. The talent and bravery these guys have is amazing, especially in their younger years! How impressive, how young and mature they were... so innocent, goofy and fun but so focused on their craft, it's amazing!!

I've gotten into kpop around 2010, back when the second generation was still in full bloom. but i got into bts in 2018, and they are the first group that i actually bonded to on a very deep level. idk, they seem super real to me, and are also around my age

I have never heard a point of view such as yours, reacting to Rise of Bangtan, especially the thing about trainee that is being couch and train by the agency... many if other reactor thinks that's kind of hard and harsh to dismissed and make all this kids gone through a lot of training and not guarantee debut, but you said that you wish record label in America willing to put in the work like those agency in South Korea....thank you for reacting this series....love you guys
