SFAT also did something stupid by going to FD when he was down 2-0. Cody's cp on game 2 meant that even if he went down 2-0, Zain would then have to cp him to a triplat stage in games 4-5. Super risky since he'd have to reverse 3-0 him to win the set, but works better than going to your worst stage on a game where you can lose the set.

PSA: Cody said after losing to KoDoRiN that he would start counterpicking to FD if he loses game 1, so he can have a chance to reverse 3-0 after he inevitably loses there (though he won this time so it wasn't exactly according to plan lol)

@kevinfetters70403 жыл бұрын
@@cyrnoz1803 I think you aren't seeing the potential strength behind the counterpick method, no matter what you're going to have to play a game on FD and Stadium, both of which are marth favored, however if you strike to battlefield/fod game one and lose, then play dreamland next game, even if you win you still have to fight on Marth's two stronger counterpicks and if you lose, then you have to go to FD twice which is much harder to win twice in a row on, however if you start stadium that knocks it out of Marth's CP and is still a fairly winnable stage, if you win the Marth will take you to FD and if you lose you can take them to FD to remove all of Marth's best stages in the matchup.
@cyrnoz18033 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Fetters The thing you don't understand is rhat you don't remove them, you are the one picking them lmao. You are just letting them choose the rest of the maps. As you say you will have to play stadium and fd, so why waste your picks on them. Might as well keep them to choose where the rest of the games will be played
@Sabbathfaax3 жыл бұрын
Fyi, the reason IBDW picked FD (I believe) is because if he picked Dreamland and lost, he'd have to win two FD games in a row to win the set. By getting it out of the way game 2 to go down 0-2, he doesn't have to win there at all in the set since Zain already won there via DSR It's a genius Strat

Too bad everyone said sfat was dumb when he did it like 3 years ago
@cyrnoz18033 жыл бұрын
How is it genius ? You still give Zain at least one FD game for free, potentially 2 if you win there. And then Zain gets to choose between the other stages when he counter picks.
@Sabbathfaax3 жыл бұрын
@@yoush3599 Not the same. SFAT picked it when he was two games down already because he just wanted to practice on the stage knowing he lost. He'd have to win 3 games on FD in his scenario

@cyrnoz18033 жыл бұрын
@@Sabbathfaax I know, but if you have to win on FD twice it means you lost on other stages twice. You will have to play at least one game on FD anyways. Why waste your stage selection on it. Imagine it goes to game five : We get the neutral stage, FD from cody, another stage for cody and 2 for Zain. Whereas if cody doesn't pick FD : Neutral stage, 2 Cody stages, FD and something else for Zain. If you can't understand that, I don't know what to tell you.

What I realized this set: Zain rarely goes for dash forward attack options, like the raw "Mew2King grab". This way he didn't build up enough threat with his dash dance, and Cody managed to either take space off him or force anti-approach hitboxes, which then lose space on their cooldown. He never wanted to play the dash dance game. I'm sure there is a rationale behind it from Zain's perspective, but I'm still surprised.

After going down 0-1 in the first round, the decision by Ibdw to forfeit his 2nd best stage in the set in game 4 by CPing FD game 2 was a sensible hedge to ensure he doesn’t get essentially checkmated if he goes down 0-2. This is likely not a strategy that just anyone can do, but it works here because Ibdw has shown he can work effectively on both large & small stages in the matchup, which makes handing stage pick to Zain in game 4/5 substantially less risky. Whether it’s YS or DL, or something in between, he has the game to stay competitive. This is also a solid call if we operate under the assumption that Fox’s stages in the matchup aren’t that different in terms of win-rate after FD. Because if this assumption is true, he’s not even losing that much by doing this. Now, that’s not to say he isn’t giving away some percentage points with this hedge-he probably is. But, in exchange, he also 100% does not have to play the toughest stage by far in the matchup twice in a row while on match point vs the best Marth in the world-which, for quite some time, has generally been considered a death sentence to Fox players everywhere (in lieu of Mango willing a miracle into existence). Overall, fantastic set to watch with probably the best Fox gameplay I’ve ever seen. Superbly navigated both in the games, and with the decisions outside them. I hope this quality of play is something we can continue to look forward to!
