The fundamental difference between Leffen and the other Foxes who have been doing substantially better against Hbox like Mango, and especially Cody, are their understanding of unreactable range, baits, and risk/reward. Leffen is very much used to Fox "hold this" privilege where it doesn't matter than you can react to him coming at you because you still have to eat the mixup. Hbox can play in a way against Leffen where he can just see him coming the majority of the time and space with safe hitboxes or move to ledge, platforms, hell we saw Hbox go from one side of BF to the other across the top platforms unchallenged. Mango and Cody would never let Hbox get away with that, and that's why he can't play like this against them anymore. They stay on him throwing out hitboxes of their own and forcing Hbox to throw moves that seem safe but that they can still whiff punish because they were ready to bait them out which forces him to jump away more which they can shark and punish as well. They also know that they can afford to take risks as long as they go to plat and at least force tech chase rest kills because not only can that reaction check Hbox and maybe they get lucky and he drops it, even if it hits and kills them they can at least get a big punish on Hbox rest end lag that might kill, or even better get a stock trade in a lot of scenarios.

Mango and Cody are able to remind people why the match-up is so bad for Puff whereas Leffen reinforces the wrong idea that Puff has all the advantages in the match-up. Honestly I think that's a good summary for why Cody and Mango are dominating with Fox whereas Leffen can't seem to hash it out. Leffen plays Fox like he's the best character in the game and doesn't have to prove it. Mango and Cody play Fox *knowing* he's the best character in the game and taking every step humanly possible to demonstrate *exactly WHY.*

Leffen is used to his character just enforcing the mixups for him without having to manually pressure the opponent by invading their space and unreactable range to bait things out and whiff punish. (Look at the Marth matchup that's been not only one of his weakest but most hated historically. Again it's all about invading space to force whiffs). Mango and Cody play around with the fact that if they stay close enough they can whiff punish anything because Fox is fast with crazy frame data, and they know that getting hit once in a while is going to happen and Fox has some of the best ways to deal with it and recover in the game so it's OK. It's just a totally different style of play. It's why Leffens Falco is pretty bad but he can play characters like Yoshi and Mewtwo very well. Those characters force certain situations through armor, hitbox size, projectiles, etc. Not as well as Fox, but in similar ways. Where as Mango plays Falco who is even more so that playstyle, Falcos hardest punishes are all through baits like that. People say all the time how even Mangos drifts are often baits because he spaces just in a specific way that he can punish a certain reactive option he thinks you'll do. Cody also has a P+ Wolf who is very much a combination of Fox+Falco and between that and having 2saint as a partner he developed the spacing against floaties better than anyone. (Which is also why Cody does so well against Amsa, he forces Amsa to commit to various situations to bait out his armor and projectiles and then blows him up for it.)

I’ve been watching for years now and there is nothing wrong with Hbox’s playstyle as a spectator. I can understand competitive players not wanting to be camped, but you have to be able to play around that in order to win. Armada (Swedish Fox/Peach hybrid main and former #1 ranked player) was able to play around Hbox’s defensive style and win sets because of it, so it’s definitely possible. While it may take a lot more patience than usual to win against Hbox, complaining about it will only leave you with a 3-0 and a handshake.

@@Botan_mp3 The funny thing about hbox "playing lame" is that some top players are willing to play that game. amsa has timed out hbox on multiple occasions at this point, and cody is willing to laser-camp hbox when hbox camps the ledge. It seems that in this set, leffen was willing to play the long game, cause i saw a LOT of lasers. The only reason why hbox was able to run away for 7mins is cause leffen decided not to approach him for 7mins. I'm not an expert or anything but i'm pretty sure you have to approach someone when you're down a stock, and leffen was like, "nah man, lemme use my second amendment rights." I find it interesting how people blame the "lame gameplay" on one person when in reality both players are refusing to approach. Just in case you happen to think that hbox playing lame is hurting the game, allow me to point out that melee had a higher peak viewership than ultimate during the tournament's stream.
