Across the country, hate crimes against Asians and Asian Americans have surged by nearly 150% from 2019 to 2020. According to #StopAAPIHate, a coalition that tracks incidents of violence and harassment against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S., verbal harassment and shunning (i.e., the deliberate avoidance of Asian Americans) make up the two largest proportions of the total incidents reported, followed by acts of physical assault.
These crimes violate the dignity and rights of Asian Americans and leave many wondering what actionable steps can be taken to combat such violence. In this video, three Asian-American members of the Boston University community discuss what’s behind the latest wave of anti-Asian racism and how allies can effectively show their solidarity.
