Buakaw's stiff long guard is basically an intercepting jab and clinch entry, once the opponent manages to break through he met them with knees

I had first seen Buakaw in the Toyota marathon. I had high hopes for him in that fight vs Jordan Tai and maaaan did he deliver. It’s like seeing a really good kickboxer face off against Darth Vader. His style is so imposing and threatening you can feel it through the screen. The fact that Buakaw takes a kick to the head and shrugs it off like a fly landed on him must’ve scared the shit out of Jordan.

I'm new to Muay Thai in terms of actually doing it. Something tells me long guard, may just be the best possible form of defense and way to close gap. Literally like having a multi tool.
@trujilloroldancarlosarturo42812 жыл бұрын
Its a good tool, I like It because It stop volume punching and its a great opener for low kicks, clinch, switch knee, a elbow or a cross but u have to be quick because It also leaves openings to you. I recommend to switch guards, use high gusrd, long guard and close guard . I would use the long guard just when the opponent Is throwing a lot of punches, specially hooks, jabs and crosses to clóset the distance, them you set up your Counter attack but use the other guards to protect you from kicks

Everything has weaknesses, and the long guard is no exception. Upper cuts, over hands and head kicks will all get get through a long guard and all are devastating, fight-ending strikes.

Explain how overhands get through, as you can just parry by turning the elbow of the extended hand
@jasperschuerr80114 ай бұрын
@@123footballbasket9 watch chingz allazov's fight against superbon for a good example of overhands making it trough the long guard. essentially, if your opponent is able to "slip" your outstretched hand, and get their head past your guard they can pretty easily feed uppercuts and overhands through, depending on weather they slip to the inside or outside. There is even examples in this highlight reel of a few punches making it through Buakaw's guard. Andre Dida scored a knockdown on Buakaw by countering his long guard like it was a jab with a gazelle hook, and nearly finished the fight with pretty textbook anti long guard strategies, like throwing long, fairly straight overhands (some people call them corkscrew punches) and uppercuts. Buakaw Vs Dida is a must watch fight tbh.

@@clapdrix72 you're right but i kind of feel like a lot of those counters are underutilized. Kinda like you should just attack Lerdsila to the body. But in practice, not many people actually did it. Basically smart fight IQ is rare. Only champ level fighters have it.

Long guard combined with cross guard is very useful in muaythai rule where there is not much uppercut punch being used. So he has to close the gap to avoid those uppercut, in my humble opinion.

Uppercut is also dangerous when elbows are in the equation
@trujilloroldancarlosarturo42812 жыл бұрын
There are long guard examples on boxing as well, i prefer this defense since it's very proactive, u can control punch volumen, set up feints, control distance, block opponents vision and get out of range, obviously it has his disadvantages like uppercuts

I believe in his K-1 days, he used the long guard stance ☝️ This style will be much needed in his bare knuckle fight against Saenchai. He will only be permitted 2 seconds in the clinch, making his clinch knee strikes useless. He will have to rely on long guard like back in his younger days ☝️ And focus on teeps, side teeps, high kicks, and flying knee strikes. Saenchai is fast, so Buakaw will need to use his long guard stance again ☝️
@felipe01020313 жыл бұрын
Man is really CRAZY how he manage to dominate the top level of "kickBOXING" at that time with barely ZERO offensive boxing, specially on his first k-1 runs... The only "punch" he use to throw constantly was that stiff jab with the hand open inside the glove, and it was more like a push not a real punch.
