I found it hilarious that Roufus' brother dismissed the Muay Thai boxer by saying it doesn't require much skills to kick the legs. Well, his brother Roufus had all the opportunities to unleash his skills at the Muay Thai boxer, while the latter was denied the use of knee kicks and elbow strikes. If the Muay Thai kickboxer was allowed to use ALL his arsenals, Roufus could very well be in a much worse situation. For the first time, the Americans realized the strengths of Muay Thai exponents. It is never too downgrading to learn from others before announcing to the world that your kickboxing is the very best in the world. In one word: humility.

This was a fight with kickboxing rules. Throws and leg sweeps from Muay Thai were not allowed. The only kick allowed in Muay Thai that was allowed here was the low kick. The 1st guy who tried to rush in, my uncle threw a front kick to push him out and followed by a round house to the guy's ribs. The sound of his kick followed by the sound of the guy in pain. The other 2 didn't even want to try. I think the dude's rib is broken.

Low kicks to the legs are absolutely devastating. If you have little defense against them and cannot throw them as well as your opponent, there is a good chance you lost the fight before it began. Kun khmer is Muay Thai (Cambodian and Thai) modern day fighting sport. They are the same. Krabi Krabong and Kmher bokator was both the ancient traditional fighting style of Thai and Khmer people which later turned into the sport you see today. There is still a debate of who developed it first. But I think the Khmer empire did because the Thai's took influence to the Khmer pre-Angkorean martial art Bokator during the ancient khmer kingdom and it's time of ruling. Thai and Khmer with their tradition and culture are pretty much the same people. Just migrated and colonized during the collapse of the khmer pre-Angkorean kingdom. Personally, I don't recall this fight and I did not hear what Rick's brother had to say. I can only go on what "The World of Boxing" had to say in characterizing the comments made after the fight. If Rick was my brother and one of the most talented kick boxers at the time and had very nearly ended the fight in the 1st round with punches, I might have said something similar and I don't find it "absurd" nor factually incorrect. Not having heard the comments myself, I cannot say whether or not the Thai fighter's skills were disparaged. I can say that striking someone with low kicks IS a simple strategy that does NOT take great skill as it's one of the first elements learned in both sports. It can be extremely effective in combat sports, as evidenced in this fight. Still it can be compared to a hitter laying down a bunt to break-up a no-hitter in baseball. Effective, but something that can be seen in a somewhat negative manner. Both of these fighters, judging only from this poor-quality video and this one fight, had a lots of talent, skill, ability and heart, and the Thai fighter had a winning strategy that the kick boxer had no effective defense to counter. Clearly, a good straight punch is also still an effective weapon as well.

Sometimes a point has to be proven. For profesional fighters representing their sports physical pain is nowhere near as bad as others trashtalking and downplaying the efficacy of your skillset. Just immagine, "American kickboxing" was a 1970s adaptation of modern kickboxing born in japan in the 1960s as a rendition of "full contact karate". Muay thai has a history dating back to somewhere around the 1200s, includes knees, elbows, low kicks, grappling and was originally performed with simple hand/ wrist wraps rendering it essentially bare knuckle. Obviously a much more holistic, functional and nuanced sport that has had literal centuries of evolution. And American kickboxers roll around and have the gall to claim their stolen sport is the most functional with the highest level of competition when they have 1/3rd the rule set and 1/10th the physical conditioning of the thai counterpart. Im American and even i know thats blatent disrespect for no reason than egotism. The fact that they only allowed low kicks literally saved this mans life.

In the USA. I remember as a kid during the 90s I was studying Muay Thai, and there were many gyms already, low kicks and how to stop them was one of the first things I did learn. They hurt as hell and can put you on a wheelchair if wasn't because they put rules in the sport fights. I think even during the 70s even before I was born Muay Thai was knowed in Europe. I remember Kick Boxing in videogames such as Street Fighter. The point is you must be crazy to think you can defeat a martial art that evolved during the war and includes eldbow or hammer hits that can kill you, you learn it in the Army too, by kick boxing. By the way Van Damme made a movie about this fight, called kickboxer if you are interested. He really understimaded the most effective combat method, it's martial art but also a sport, but mainly a real martial art created to kill in combat. If there were no rules, trust me, the guy could have been killed. By the way @5:50 was more a "returning the favour", because when the Muay Thai fighter was KOed for the second time, he was hitted too. The kick boxer has been kinda cocky because usually the first round you don't go for KO. The first round usually is to give a "show" to the paying people. You go for the KO at the 2nd or 3th round. He showed to be a good fighter for lasting so long, but also a fool because he risked a lot. A regoular guy would have lasted from 3 seconds to 5 seconds against those kicks in the legs. Keep in mind a low kick is often comparated to a baseball mace hitting you in the legs at 90Km/h if well done.

To use a phrase I saw recently - asymmetric tactics. Attacking where your opponent is least expecting, and where he can least defend. Muay Thai is ruthless in its execution and relentless in exploiting weakness. The Muay Thai fighter was willing to take some really good hits and did not sway from his fight plan to attack the knee joint and leg muscles. Anyone who's ever taken a serious kick to the thigh will know that you simply don't want to take too many of those type of kicks 🙂. Great video.

I'm not a fighter, but in my mind I'm questioning why Rick did not change his strategy and keep away from the kicks early on, knowing that he was going to be kicked repeatedly if he didn't do something different. Keep doing what you're doing while expecting different results is a measure of insanity.

He probably wasn't so familiar with Muay Thai or low kicks, so it didn't occur to him or perhaps he simply didn't realise the effect of continual low kicks.
@carlruppert732410 ай бұрын
This fight occurred VERY EARLY in the history of mixed martial arts as a whole, and fighters simply didn't know everything that we know today. As the previous commenter stated, it's likely that Rick greatly underestimated the immense power behind low kicks from Muay Thai, and had no idea how dangerous they would be for him in this fight. But even MORE importantly, the main reason why he didn't change his strategy is because he actually COULDN'T - he simply didn't have the necessary skills in his fighting toolbox to defend successfully against Muay Thai low kicks, which left him with no other choice but to try and evade them as much as possible until he finally couldn't take any more damage. This is what basically ended up sealing his fate in the end, and by extension the fate of the entire world of MMA, forever.
