friend of mine ran a server called ice fuse with his buddy and all in it cost around 750-1k per month they were making around 10k per month in donations. My friend said at some point you have to realise there are people who are actively looking to waste their money. At first ppl were just giving them money for nothing just to support them, then they started offering small things and the donations exploded the more random things they added to buy the more people bought them. In reality this kind of salethrough is commonplace in the digital asset world. I do believe allowing for large value donations or purchases for a digital product is immoral, I don't think anyone should be spending that kind of money on a video game.

Back then, GL was a really great place and I loved hopping on with people I met on the server, but this video shows how much greed has impacted the community. There was an old military rp server that I once played on, and it honestly wasn't a bad server. The owner and all staff were super nice and welcoming, and they weren't power hungry like most on other servers are. The most they used their admin abilities were to just well be admin and mess around even using their power to have some fun with players. It had some microtransactions, but it was just donations to help fund the server and some donations did come with benefits like donator only jobs and even custom jobs, but they were definitely much much cheaper. It unfortunately shut down due to lack of funds to keep the server running and a small player base that had unfortunately died out because the server had been shut down before because of a lack of funds. The reason I talk about it is to shed some light on the server owners that genuinely care about their server and player base. What's upsetting is the servers that have good owners are the small ones that are being overshadowed by the already larger servers like gaminglight that are just money grabs for the owner which lead to their inevitable shut down since the owner can't keep paying for the server and loses motivation/interest in keeping the server up due to a lack of players. The name of the server was DauntingRP. They were military rp server but changed over to dark rp. Like I said its honestly sad that a server like this shut down since the owner really cared about it and the people playing it. It was definitely less strict than other servers which is probably why I enjoyed playing it on the weekend. Anyway, that's my little spiel.

I was an early dev on the early gaming light rp servers with Zeeptin and Sonic and also administrate for it. Its wild how money hungry they were during even the beginnings. School-RP, Slave-RP, Walking-Dead-RP it didn't matter how many servers they had they would just keep pushing out crap to make money.

I played gaming light Imperial RP extensively about a year ago. I fell foul of their scamming business practices. They have players donate for VIP factions and skill levels etc, they conspire with the faction heads to ban players using any excuse they want. Then when they try to appeal they hide behind the contract clause "we reserve the right to revoke any donation at any time etc." When I made a bank chargeback, they gave me a community blacklist for my efforts XD. They ban people from questioning their accounting methods in an attempt to cover up their fraud. The admin team collude to silence any and all dissent from the player base. The server owner would act nice and approachable until you started asking the wrong questions. He'd attend the monthly staff meetings and pat everyone on the back and wave the carrot in their faces. The kicker is the staff who volunteer their time will never see a dime of all that money. I'm sure not a single cent of this "donation" money is accounted for or reported. They also run the risk of getting the same treatment as Hogwarts RP when Warner Bros. shut all their GMOD servers. I'm sure Disney will be quite happy to find out someone has been making tens of thousands of dollars from an Imperial RP server using ripped assets from their IP / games. Seeing as it's all public knowledge, I'll just go ahead and point you all in the right direction. Gaminglight, LLC - registered with the North Carolina Secretary of State. It would be such a shame if someone were to report this server to the relevant authorities.

What's even better, this is a perfect way to sue a person (or company if they registered one). FAQ is not Terms of Service, and even if that bit was in ToS it's not enforceable on products unless otherwise specified on the product. Not only would you probably be able to win the lawsuit, but also would nearly cripple the server. Im short: they can't take away something from you on the server which is defined as "permanent". As they didn't define permanent on that shop page, it would use the common definition.

I used to run a small Minecraft server. Maybe 20 players average at peak times and a hundred or so regular players. I set up donation tier packages to pay for the server. it was pretty much just custom ranks and a couple extra bull shit perks. Nothing pay to win. Everyone who donated just did so to keep the community alive so I may be profited $20 a month after paying the server fees. There was one guy however who donated at least $500 over a year. I discovered later on that he was on some sort of government assistance (disability or welfare, something like that) and was willing to spend a sizeable amount of his limited income on the server. If he had wound up in a community like this where they were more than willing to exploit their player base he would be dead broke. I had to cut him off from donating because I felt bad about it. Servers like this are the reason why Minecraft updated their EULA to prevent pay to win. These server still exist and can easily fly under the radar but something like in this video could be shut down and probably have the owners face charges. I think more games with private multiplayer servers should adopt this and actually enforce it. There's a lot of people that treat games as their life and can leech onto a community. The admins/management smell blood in the water so to speak and take advantage of the situation. Make them feel special and butter them up to keep the donations coming. It's amazing how much people dick ride server admins in video games. It makes a lot of the admins get the reddit mod mentality.
