Bubi Takes Care of Adopted Baby Elephant, Khanyisa on a Family Walk in the Wild

Enjoy some beautiful early morning scenes as the herd head out and Bubi takes on the role of allomother, keeping close to Khanyisa and giving her the trunk once-over to make sure all is well with the calf. Bubi forages close by to give Khanyisa time to play in the sand and investigate her wilderness.
Matriarch Tokwe comes in to check on Khanyisa, and greet Adine's son, Xander, who is the same age as Jabulani, is training to be a veterinarian and grew up right alongside the rescued herd. During COVID Lockdown in 2020, Xander helped Adine and the team to care for Khanyisa and take her for walks to the dam with Lammie, to get the calf used to her new wilderness home and to prepare her for her days with the herd.
Watch a few lessons in chemical communication and elephants' amazing sense of smell, before the herd head out walking, with Mambo and Fishan close by.

I absolutely love seeing the relationship between Bubi and Khanyisa I usually can’t watch them without tears coming to my eyes. All the elephants are survivors but there’s something about Bubi’s story and losing her mother in such a horrific way directly in front of her with no way of helping her that just resonates with me deeply it really gives insight into Bubi’s personality. She truly is such a beautiful soul with a devotion to Khanyisa that is priceless she’s making sure that Sunshine understands that sense of love protection and safety that she herself had so viciously ripped away from her Bubi’s teaching us all what love really means one doesn’t have to be related to another by blood to want to care for and nurture those around us(I too have been lucky enough to have a human Bubi come into my life when I needed them most)thank you beautiful Bubi for all you do for Khanyisa and for all your lessons for the humans whom you’ve touched around the globe. @@GuantanamoBayBarbie2 I was actually crying a little myself while I was writing it Bubi went through such awful pain and she didn’t deserve it whenever I see her in one of her moods where she’s struggling or is wary and unsure about what is happening my heart breaks a little for her. I can’t blame her for not always trusting those around her even after years of knowing she’s safe but at the same time it definitely shaped her love and devotion for calves she’s made it her mission to be the best mother and auntie to any babies who need her because I think she remembers what it was like growing up without the love and security a mom gives,she has such a beautiful caring heart.❤️❤️🐘🐘🥺🥺

I learned something new with this video and that is elephants, like snakes, have a Jacobson’s Organ in their mouths to analyze the different chemical signals their trunks/tongues pick up. Utterly fascinating if you ask me. Anyway, it’s so very heartening to see Baby Khanyisa grow and put on bulk; she’s such a big girl and has become such an integral member of the herd.

It has long been known by human science that Elephants are very social, very family oriented, and they form herd extended family units where they protect eachother, and even assist in child rearing. But to see a collection of orphans immediatelly bond together and form a social family herd unit is quite interesting, and very promising for this species. I just wish that we as a species could accomplish this evolutionary feat. We are allegedly much more psychologically developed, and you would think this would be a "no brainer". But, this is our dilemma. Maybe we're to smart for our own good?

I remember Bubi when she was younger and throwing a very dangerous tantrum to her carers when she was in the water and always thought she was mean..

Shaking her head was hardly a dangerous tantrum. When Bubi was just a baby she saw her mother killed by humans for her teeth, I am surprised she tolerates any humans near her or Khanyisa. She is not mean, she is a lovely caring ellie who has been a wonderful allomother to Khanyisa as well as mother to Zindoga.

That happened back in 2020 so Bubi wasn’t that much younger then. She’s most definitely not mean at all but sometimes she can struggle and be moody which was what happened in the video you’re referring to her head shaking was her way of making her feelings known to let the team know she was agitated it wasn’t a downright dangerous situation were that the case Bubi’s body language would’ve been very different. Due to what she experienced as a young calf in Zimbabwe losing her mother to poachers that one incident shaped Bubi’s personality greatly making her more wary and suspicious of new situations as well as newer people she’s not familiar with she doesn’t immediately warn up to people it takes her awhile to trust that being said she does trust Adine and her carers many who have been with the original elephants since their relocation to Hoedspruit in 2002 so those bonds are very strong. Bubi is a very gentle loving soul and amazing mom to Zindoga and allomother especially with Khanyisa and the other teenagers when they were small she just has a difficult time occasionally that’s all doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.❤️❤️🐘🐘

From what I have seen in some videos the elephants seem to lead the way back to the homestead themselves in the evening. I think that they know what time it is instinctively as the sun starts to set and it is a familiar safe place for them at night.

I always wondered if the elephants feel any safer about themselves or even Khanyisa when the caretakers are right there with them. for ex. if they pick up a smell they are not familiar with I have seen the herd get nervous and gather together with the caretakers by their side, but would it be even more of an alarming situation to them and would their actions be more frantic if they were by themselves? Just something I always wondered.

Bubi is also the favorite of Fishan the man. She always gives way to Tokwe and Lundi but she truly is the real deal in this Herd hierarchy. She is just beside and and a few steps behind the matriarch and the Auntie. She could in a spilt second take either spot, but then why should she when she is so favored in her own right? I do believe if Fishan hadn't been castrated, and they were off birth control, Bubi and Fishan would be a item.

I always feel strangely touched when I see Bubi with Khanyisa. I love Bubi and am always a little bit concerned about her well being because of her story and because of her position in the hierarchy of the herd. And I love her eyes... ❤
