DEFINITELY. It was released not one, but TWO games.
@Mike142644 жыл бұрын
@@RedTsarOldChannel-INACTIVE yeah, just... Why? Why revive this character? The series was already weak to begin with. Woolies Strike Back was a mediocre platformer, and a bit overpriced for how short it was. Paws on Fire is basically Bit Runner (apparently it was even done by the guys that made Runner), but less precise and overall worse. And also very short. And overpriced. And it has voice acting, and returning characters from the pilot episode and the second game, of all things. It's almost as if Accolade orders the devs to make the games as painfully mediocre as possible, because it's Bubsy, and it's "his thing". Well, I'd rather play a good game, that a mediocre one with a character that's either obnoxious, or obnoxiously vain and too try-hard to be cool, especially overpriced.

@@mix3k818 that, I'd say it's because of the standards at the time. I'm not sure, but many people at the time already knew the series weren't that strong. Though they're not terrible, Mario-like platforming, combined with Sonic's speed in movement, death by falling from too high and death by one hit from any enemy or hazard, as well as levels that are very vertical in nature and a camera that doesn't show anything that's above you during your jumps... The voice actress for Bubsy later became the first voice for Rouge the Bat, ironic considering that she went from voicing a Sonic knockoff to voicing a main character in the Sonic series.

I played all the Bubsy game (except 3D) and I think today Bubsy might atually work as a cartoony comedic game character. And before anyone bombards me with sharks with guns that fire flaming bullets, the gaming industry has much better writers and game designers now and I think the industry could really benefit from a quirky little cat character who breaks the 4th wall, makes references and has a kind of looney tunes charm to him. There aren't enough colourful, nostalgic childish games around. I'm just saying.

An underwater level that's somehow enjoyable in a terrible game? That's actually quite ironic if you think about it. Most good games can't even get a water level right, it's even less likely for a bad game to do the impossible task of creating a fun water level. (or at least tolerable one)
@justanotheryoutubechannel2 жыл бұрын
One thing this game did really well was the engine, it controls and looks pretty bad but the engine can display a bunch of flat shaded polygons at 60fps at 512x448, nearly double the resolution of most PS1 games, that’s really impressive! Other than this, usually this mode was generally just used for fighting games and menus like in Chrono Cross. Had they really focused on making the flat shaded look work, with less garish colours and better designed levels and less fog (to allow you to see further into the distance with the higher resolution), this game would look really good. Virtua Racing is a great example of a flat shaded game with more polygons and a higher resolution than most games. The big issue is the controls, which ruin the game, and then there’s the bad music, flawed level design, annoying voice clips, foggy gameplay, bad camera, bad story, and just lack of enemies and content. Everything adds up to make a terrible game.

See, this is kind of what I'm talking about with your Positives series -- it's called "Positives," but you spend a lot of time in most episodes reiterating how bad the games are that you're looking at. And in this episode, you also tore apart the previous games in the series -- and while I never played Bubsy 2 or 3, I played the HELL out of Bubsy 1 as a kid, and absolutely loved every minute of it. I found it to be a wonderfully-designed platformer with a lot of personality and great stage layouts that rewarded you for exploring them with tons of secrets. I actually played more Bubsy than I did Sonic, and considered it every bit as good when I was young -- though my opinion has certainly gone down since then. I did rent Bubsy 3D as a kid, and you know what? I didn't hate it. I didn't love it, mind you! But I didn't hate it. At the time, I had an N64 and a PS1, and I kept lamenting that PS1 games looked awful in 3D because they tried too hard to be N64 games, using tons of polygons that the PS1 hardware simply wasn't capable of handling without distortion and low-res texturing making them look godawful compared to their N64 peers. Bubsy 3D, on the other hand, used really simple textures and really simple polygons, and as a result, I thought it had a very sharp, clean look to it -- preferable to most other 3D titles on the system, as it stayed within the limits of what the PS1 could do. It lacked ambition, but as a result, it did nothing to make itself look bad. The controls were what killed the game for me, but to be honest, I found the stage designs to be fairly enjoyable, with environments that were kind of fun to explore -- or would've been, if the controls were better. In general, I just felt like honest-to-goodness EFFORT went into the game, and appreciated it for that alone. I would've been disappointed if I'd shelled out the money to buy it... but as a rental, I felt I'd gotten my money's worth, and returned it pretty satisfied with the experience. I wouldn't call it a GOOD game, exactly, but I also don't think it's THAT HARD to find positives in it, and I don't think the constant reiteration that it's objectively a bad game, and that no one should play it, was necessary, nor were the negative words about the previous titles in the series. And the section where you made fun of Bubsy fans by pretending to be one and speaking in that stereotypical nerdy voice? Not cool at all. I like your videos, but I seriously think you need to reconsider your approach to Positives, or else leave the series to someone who's better able to be positive about these titles. Stating your own opinion is fine, but you really only need to state it ONCE, and there's no need to make it out as the WORD OF GOD or anything -- if other people like the game you're talking about, they shouldn't feel insulted watching your video.
@LauraPetalYT10 жыл бұрын
I worry for your mental wellbeing Shane. I thought Sonic 06 was going to destroy you but it didn't. Then I thought Bubsy 3D would be the end of you, but it wasn't. Fun fact: Rob Paulsen (Yakko, Pinky, Raphael) was once the voice of Bubsy, I think for Bubsy 2 and the one on the Jaguar.

The first Bubsy is mediocre. The 2nd hurts to play and the 3D just looks painful. It is a rare game that you can tell that a game controls poorly watching video. If you had a Playstation and needed your pre-Mario 64 standard 3D platforming, Jumping Flash! 1 & 2 ought to be your standard.

I really should talk about Jumping Flash at some point. I remember enjoying them!

I admire your work on these videos! It's really quality over quantity, which I prefer! The only positive thing about the original Bubsy is the music. The thing I hated the most were the one hit kills... But you just had the balls to review this game, nicely done.

I hate it when people look at just the negatives of games and are blinded by the negatives **cough cough** Sonic Boom **cough,** but even I couldn't find anything good about this game. Props to you sir! Subscribed!

Seriously though.. At the around 6:30 you do a caricature of people who liked the Bubsy games. Who ever said anything remotely like that?

thegodpopper No, I just think that it's a silly point to make when in all my years of gaming I've never heard anyone whine about that. Taking issue with something and pointing it out doesn't automatically mean that anyone was "offended".

thegodpopper I appreciate the civil response. That's so very rare in YT comments. Thank you

I'm honestly surprised you didn't mention the music. It fits the game really well.

Wow, a reviewer who doesn't scream their head off for 5 to 10 minutes? You sir have got a new subscriber. As for Bubsy, I tried it recently after JonTron reviewed it and could not stand the controls on any of the games in the franchise. Really, you hit it spot on. If you can't make the controls work then you have failed at making a platformer, or a game for that matter.

This is the only platformer I've ever played where the water levels improve the experience, and I'm not OK with that.

I gotta say the first bubsy is pretty good, the second one has some weird gravity that makes it unplayable. Bubsy 3d, oh god no...

I Always thought of moar Bubsy games that could that been made if they could have made Bubsy 3D better: Super Bubsy - Sega CD (1994) enhanced port of first game with upscaled graphics. Bubsy in Furbidden Planet - Game Boy Color (1998) 2D port of Bubsy 3D. Bubsy - Game Boy Advance (2001) port of first Bubsy game for Game Boy Advance, would have been a GBA lauch title. Bubsy 4 - PlayStation 2 (2002) 3D platformer that tries to be like Sonic Adventure, but fails miserably. This one would have killed the franchise for sure.

It takes a whole different level of bad for the WATER level to be the "best" one.

Good to see someone trying hard to find the good in really terrible games rather than so many other youtube people who try really hard to find the negatives in okay games.

As a kid I rented the SNES Bubsy games a lot when there was nothing else that interested me. I don't remember enjoying it but it was a game that I knew what I could expect and I found somewhat fun. I rented Bubsy 3D once. I'm pretty sure I rented to original Bubsy after playing this one. Neither are good games but that should say how bad Bubsy 3D was: a bored kid in the 32-bit era would rather play a middling (at best) 16-bit platformer than this thing. I respect you trying to find any positives.

No one wants to make a bad game. I really feel bad for this game and Superman 64. There was so much potential.
@Casketkrusher_4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that bad. Just a lot of experimental gameplay, 1996 was huge for the upcoming 3D generation.

Would have actually been cool if it was released for the 32X.

Almost 3 Years Later: Bubsy returned in the PS4 and PC. We did the Bubsy in Sonic Forces joke WAY too many times. We brought Bubsy back by joking him. My plan might work. Maybe...
