The main thing I've said would have made Bubsy ten times better is if they used the yarns of wool you collected act like the rings in Sonic. As the fact they built a game where you're meant to go as fast as possible, but also included one hit deaths just destroys the desire to move anything faster than a snails pace. Also, Bubsy doesn't have a singular arch-nemesis either, Mario has Bowser, Sonic has Dr Robotnik, Just having an entire species as an enemy just lacks any kind of conflict.
@slopesgameroom4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's annoying to play having to constantly hold back running even though the game seriously wants you too!
@Larry4 жыл бұрын
@@slopesgameroom Totally, If I had any talent, I'd mod the game to have the yarn act like rings, that or Bubsy becomes invincible once he reaches a certain speed. It wouldn't stop falling into the unseen pits, but it would make the game more fun. But the level designs just needed more focus. and they need to understand Sonic was more a rollercoaster you played as a platform game. you knew you could run at full speed and not worry about geting hit, and even if you did, there's few consequences.

@pferreira19833 жыл бұрын
There's three problems: 1) The camera can't keep up with Bubsy so either they needed to provide a wider view or slow him down. 2) Have a life bar, no one hit kills. 3) Better collision detection for enemies and wool. Unlike Dan I don't feel the games came out terrible, terrible but some things needed to be fixed to make the games more playable.

Just a note on some of the concept art stuff you showed, like the wolf on a board: Those are fake. They were forgeries made by an artist named SqrlyJack, who made these and pretended to be someone who worked at Accolade in the past. We were already confirmed this by one of Jack's ex-followers, plus with confirmation by Berlyn himself that they were faked. You can even see yourself by checking Macklin's other work and comparing the signatures. Anyway, nice job with the video. Obviously, not a fan of the hate sprinkled about, but you already knew that from my twitter post. Alot of the history in here was good and i'll give you a applause on it. I'm hoping things go upward for Bubsy, especially since we've been honestly thinking that the people who current own Bubsy have been experimenting with it. Heck, they were definitely originally focused with the massive hatebase and memes on the character, until POF showed up in which Bubsy fans like myself were trying hard to help steer the franchise away from being nothing but a joke, which has been working, albeit at a bit of a pace. It's still an uphill battle, but i'm positive Bubsy will keep going uphill from here on. From one big Bubsy fan, thanks for the video, Ibbertson. - Xin
@quetzadrake4 жыл бұрын
Yeah just looking at the drawings and comparing them in terms of style, sketching technique, and scan/photo quality, I can tell they were done by different artists in different time periods, even if I wasn't already familiar with SqrlyJack, their style, and their, uh, "interests".

I've got no problem with yiff or trans people (trans rights are human rights, baby!), but Jack seems like a huge jerk, I remember before Woolies Strike Back was announced they acted like their Bubsy was the definitive Bubsy and everybody who disliked her was transphobic. They even closed their Bubsy fan club on DeviantArt (which was intended for both, ironic and unironic Bubsy fans mind you) just because their OC couldn't be canon. Arsehole.
@Xindictive4 жыл бұрын
@@supermakermatic2111 Yea, it wasn't fun. Jack also attacked other fans for liking Bubsy, infiltrating other fan groups and trying to punch down on all of them, acting superior. This was back when her Tumblr wasn't taken down due to the changes made to remove porn from that site. She's since changed from that and stayed calm with all of us, not pulling that shit anymore or trying to bash at Bubsy anymore, which is good, but what she's doing now ain't much better. But eh, as long as she isn't after us, i don't really care or want involvement in what she's up to. But yea, there's a new fan club out there now managed by myself and others which has gotten notice (and been joined by) the official Bubsy (from Twitter and such) aswell as Michael Berlyn and a few people who have been involved with Bubsy and it's developments in the past. We're still active and doing more positive things for the franchise. We also don't have any harsh ego on what Bubsy should be in the server. Right now we're trying to make a reanimated project happen of the Bubsy pilot. Going well so far, too.

@@Xindictive Seems I'm learning a lot about certain people who've made their name on the Internet, more than I ever thought I would. While I'm glad that what happened with you and SqrlyJack has since been resolved, I can't say that this person would be someone I'd be working with anytime soon...or at all, given what's come to light, if this is true. That aside, I thought that Bubsy wasn't completely hated by everyone. It's nice to know that there is a sufficient fan club for the Bobcat. I'm curious. Is there a link for this fan club online or would this be something one would have to attend, physically?

Brutally honest here: Personally I don’t know if I would listen to the Podcast. I have always watched you for the Complete History. The Kickstarter stuff has never interested me terribly much but I still watch them since it’s still better than nothing (and sometimes some episodes like the Superman one, are really good watches). Your passion for games and in-depth research is why I watch these complete histories (I have seen every one and am still waiting for the ‘Complete History of The Animaniacs Games’ and the Oddworld series *wink wink*). That’s why I subbed. I have been subbed for a long long long time. Like a long time. Actually seeing the games themselves though is one of the best parts. Seeing (visually) the changes, progress and blunders through the videogame franchises are the highlights of the video. I mean a main part of videogames are the visuals, and it’s hard to describe the visuals of a game over a podcast. And it’s impossible for one to imagine perfectly what you are talking about when they have never seen the game series in the first place. I’m sure your written content itself would be good as a podcast BUT I know I couldn’t listen to it since I would spend more time finding clips of the games myself than actually listening to your podcast about said games. I know most people will say they want a podcast, but if it means snuffing a few visual complete histories then, I’m probably gonna have to say I would rather choose no podcast. I’m just one person though and I’m sure I’m in the minority. Keep being awesome.

The Bubsy cartoon would have at least worked had they had a better writer than the one that would go on to later write the WORST seasons of Fairly Oddparents. And that's his magnum opus. He was the guy behind the awful Spongebob ripoff, "Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island." It would have been a series ideal for Doug Langdale, the writer behind the Earthworm Jim cartoon series that reveled in the weirdness of the series. Instead, we got a watered down Eek! the Cat clone with weak attempts at humor and totally wasting the voice cast. And yet, I wouldn't say it's the worst video game cartoon adaption. Also, it looks like that last game actually ties into the unsold cartoon pilot.

I beat Bubsy 1 back in the day but even i have to i agree it wasn't the greatest game out there in it's genre at the time. Never understood how it got two sequels. I would not give it a 1 out of 5 on a fun scale, i would give it a 3 out of five.

Bubsy was one of my favourite games on the Jaguar. I think that says more about the Jaguar than about Bubsy, though...

I had tried out 1 & 2 during the height of my ROM playing days. And while the levels were nice and expansive in 1, Bubsy had all the traction of a greased cartoon cat. For a while when all of the reviews were coming out on KZbin I wondered, "Did they get Rob Paulson to voice Bubsy for the 16 bit era?" Because it sounded like Yakko Warner was wearing a bobcat costume.

Paulson did voice Bubsy in Bubsy 2 (and the pilot). Bubsy 1's voice actor was a guy called Brian Silva.
@tipulsar854 жыл бұрын
@@Xindictive I guess the voice sampling is rough enough that it confused my ears. Thanks for the clarification.

Now you’ve used the Machinarium OST I really want a video on the complete history of Samorost and Machinarium. Gorgeous games that I’d love to know more about

That intro might be the only time the word quality has been used in a video about Bubsy ever

The first game is an above-average mascot platformer for the time. It sits somewhere between like, Awesome Possum, but not quite as good as Cool Spot or something. Had the sequels actually refined and improved on what it did, it might be remembered better.

I have fond memories of the first Bubsy game, but it occurs to me now that it was likely due to a game drought and not having money for the big name titles. I do still like the old artstyle though, the colors popped and the animation was pretty goofy and memorable to me.

4:46 I’m one of the most nitpicky people on earth, so I have to point out that that’s Paper Mario, and his games are (mostly) turn based rpgs.

"I don't like this game." Wait what? I'm glad to hear you say that, I'm not a fan of bubsy, and wasn't sure why you chose him but like always the history is wicked interesting and I'm glad you give you honest opinions on the games themselves. I still don't know why Bubsy was the one franchise chosen to return in 2017, it's not like he was that memorable. As for a podcast almost all these videos can be watched with no video) though you miss out on a bit of the experience. I'm just not sure you need to rerecord them unless it's something you want to do, but as always, you do you Dan, and I'll keep supporting with the views, sharing and of course patreon.

What really scares me is that modern bubsy is voiced by Brolly from Dragon ball super.

I can definitely get behind audio only/podcasts, but I'd definitely stick with watching the videos, personally. Maybe an idea would be doing early release podcasts for topics that would eventually become videos? Maybe that could be a way to give supporters something early...but that might risk hurting views from supporters who already listened to the podcasts. Either way, best of luck!

why Bubsy got good reviews back in the day is likely because Acolade payed the various gaming magazines a big chunk of money to say good things about it.

I liked Bubsy back in the day. It’s no Sonic, but was more fun than Awesome Possum, Aero the acrobat, that king fu squirrel thing, Zool and the likes. I would say it was the top of that heap. And after countless hours of Somic, but was an OK alternative. But all platformers that try to be fast like Somic kind of failed. High seas Havoc, Zool and Bubsy failed in that. But you could play Bubsy slow, unlike the other ones.

A complete history of Severance Blade of Darkness by Rebel Act Studios would be great, it was their only game before shooting down. Although some members of the team joined Mercury Steam and other studios.

I still have my copy of the first Bubsy. Always been too lazy to get rid of it. Was admittedly hyped for the cartoon pilot, but ended up never seeing it. It just... never aired in my area. Only saw it recently; rather glad kid me didn't get exposed.

I can't imagine how crushing it must've felt to see Crash and Mario 64. Sure they didn't have a good game but it was at least 3d which was still cool at the time... then they had nothing.
