It's not "running away", it's "advancing in a different direction"... THe story is told of an RN Bucc flying out to land on Ark Royal in the med in the early 1970s. On the final turn, they hit a seagull. The seagull comes in through the front quarter light panel, hits the pilot's chest in several roughly butchered chunks, lands in his lap and rolls into the footwell. The pliot instinctively reaches down to grab it before it gets stuck behind the ridder pedals. Just then, the nav looks up and very quickly notices three alarming things: 1. there's a hole in the front screen 2. the front cockpit's covered in blood 3. he can't see the back of the pilot's head Making a snap decision that the pilot's been decapitated, the nav promptly exits stage upwards, courtesy of messrs Martin and Baker. In consequence, just as the pilot straightens up, the canopy flies off with a bang and two jets of rocket exhaust come through the nav's footwells (open the front cockpit), _nearly_ convincing him that they're on fire and he should take the black-and-yellow exit himself. He didn't however, and went on to make a successful landing on the carrier, whilst wondering why the nav had decided to suddenly abandon him. As you might imagine, the nav was subject to much tactful enquiry and mild and respectful ribbing when he was picked up...😈

Skiing at the Lecht, it would have been in the 80's, a gaggle of Buccaneers go overhead very low, they all bunt as they clear the ridge line, except the last who rolls inverted and pulls through.
