You’ve renewed my desire to have a complete Buchla tip top set of modules. I still only have the first 2. I don’t understand this module but your patch is amazing!

once again an unbelievable demo. I have all the other tip top buchla modules in a case and was going to pass on this, but I will rethink that now. unfortunately that will mean building a bigger case as I want to keep a separate case for only buchla modules.

This is clearly a serious sound design filter bank. I find nothing negative about it since it fits fine in the Mantis and a must have for atomic space travel. Waiting for mine to come in from Sweetwater. It would be golden if a patch diagram was available. Well done 🎉🎉🎉

From this patch? Well, it's simple. Just connect a VCO to the 'all' input, audition program out and throw CV triggers, lfo's and anything you can find to the black program CV inputs. Then, try to connect a wobble/LFO to the program frequency and width and enjoy!

@@elektrenai219 Glad to be of help. The 7U's top row is completely free of clutter. I always found it would have been better if the power bus was in the middle, but in this case, it's better to be in the lower row :)

I've had a parking spot reserved for the bark filter for a while, although couldn't foresee picking one up anytime soon due to the price. While considerably bigger, this one is enticing, not least for the extra bands. Although I am told the bark scale tuning of the filters are very 'musical', not that I know what that means. I just know that this kind of processor would be really powerful in a sound design / experimental mixing scenario. I'm especially excited to process stringed instruments, field recordings and bring them into mix with some oscillators. Would be wonderful to try both for myself and see how they sound and feel. Thanks for the video - liked and subscribed.

Always been curious about Filterbanks/Spectral Processors, this certainly doesn't make it easier to ignore that part of my mind. While it is huge, I do appreciate that it still is "reasonable" in terms of cost. The Verbos or the Frap Tools one at around 1000 euro are just that tiny bit too steep to justify for me.

Thanks for your comment. I think price, depth and size are going to be a 'problem' for this one. But it had to be made! I've been hoping for a real Buchla for a long time but it's just too unobtainium for me. This comes very close and I really hope I can build a full 200T system with the modules I have and which are still planned. 769 euro isn't exactly cheap. A Fumana may be more expensive, but it's a 21st century top quality design which features the dual 296 vocoder scenario in one module (16 extra modulation bands). And it doesn't have eight daughter boards on the back.

NLC makes a much cheaper version if you want to look into it. def not as many cv possibilities, but it is the module that got me interested. It is at it's core a vocoder module, but can do some similar things to this.

This made me want to install Softube modular. It has 296e. 296e is the only thing I miss from it.

Cool. That's probably the most affordable way to own a true Buchla 'e' series. It's way more advanced than the 1970's 296. Try to make a video for it!

@@CinematicLaboratory I have to think about it. I try to keep new computer cleaner. 296e is only thing I am missing from Softube modular and it takes some time to learn it well enough to make video about it.

The Bark Filter is a little big masterpiece. Verbos is very close to Buchla and I am sure it covers everything you'd need.

Slightly different sound but Audio Damage have a really good Moog 914 vst, a lot of fun patching M4L envelopes and LFOs to the different bands!

I don’t know if you were aiming for harsh- but I expected to finish this video with unbearable GAS for this thing, and came away with very little. I wouldn’t be surprised if I bought one eventually, but I think I’ll try to master the other Buchla/TT gear first. Thank you anyway!

My videos are never intended to make you buy stuff, but to help you make decisions like this. I don't think I did a bad demo with it, but it was a first patch. I think it's way too big for most eurorack users and there's a lot you can do for that budget. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

There are, but the flexibility of a true filter bank is all the modulation abilities and individual outputs etc. I’ve built this sort of thing in the er301 but it’s not the same as having a dedicated unit like this. There is also the Rossum spectral processor, the synthesis technologies e520. And then there are other spectral modules like the verbose BARK filter and the Fumana. Each have their own sound and abilities

Great vid as always! But how did you get this into a Make Noise Case? In mine there’s not enough depth without touching the power pins behind it…

I did nothing special to be honest. I just put it in the top row and it stays a few metric millimeters from the power board. I am using the old case here. The new 4 zone power case has elevated connectors so I am afraid it doesn't fit. This 296T depth worries me, that's why I highlighted it at the beginning of the video. It would be a nightmare if people bought it and it doesn't fit.

I don't quite understand what's the real power of "spectral processor". Eath time I see it, I automatically start thinking "isn't it just an equalizer?". But you obviously record some cool stuff and I guess it plays major role here... Would be happy to get an "explain me like im five" sort of explanation, if anyone could do such :) Not about "what it does", but about "why it's complex and deep" because I still don't get "what the deal? isnt this just your average eq" (note: I was guitar player before I started being interested in modulars and what not, so I may still have certain unconscious stuff from my pre-modular era days) but I know there is more to it, otherwise you wouldnt be such inspired and excited, right? Meanwhile... thank you for video, it was cool to listen to, regardless.

It is kind of a graphic equalizer, that's a good starting point. But then all the 16 bands are individual bandpass filters with their own outputs. The even and uneven numbers also have their separate inputs&outputs, if you like. That's a lot of fun already. Input two sources and patch their bandpassed outputs to different processing chains - or simply play the bands with your hands. Oh and unlike a graphic EQ all the bands are resonant, you can let them oscillate if you like. Add to that a VCA on every band, so you can play it with CV (also on audio rate, or with a step sequencer!). The last bonus is that every band has an envelope follower, so you can modulate anything with the dynamics of the audio input of any band. For example like a vocoder. Todd Barton has a few videos on the Buchla 296e, it's quite impressive.

Who is speaking in the vocal sample that you used to approximate vocoder behavior? I feel like I am supposed to know. Or is the author who might be known and not the speaker?

I wrote the text myself, and the speaker is Daisy from the VoxBox AI Text to Speech program, but slowed down in the Morphagene. So it's all produced especially for this video and hopefully unique.
