A conversation on unsustainable gravel and water extraction in three areas of Alberta. It begins with Colin Smith who offers to grow support for protecting Alberta's well water. Gerry Bietz from Bighillcreek.ca starts the discussion by explaining how important Big Hill Springs is for Calgary and the area's water supply and biodiversity. It is a geological marvel, the 4th largest spring in Canada, that cannot be replicated or replaced. Muriel explains Big Hill Springs residents' efforts to stop the gravel extraction of this precious water and biodiverse area. Lyse offers information about the negotiation process that favours the industry.
Red Deep County resident, Jody, explains her contamination well and offers her recent efforts to address gravel activity in the Medicine Flats area since her family's arrival in 2019. Adele explains the gravel pit history in Medicine Flats since her arrival in 1998. Dale Christian offers the time she put in with the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance to prove the importance of preserving environmentally sensitive areas of Alberta and how it seems to fall on deaf ears.
Neil and his wife Joyce explain the time and energy they have invested to help protect their well and the longevity of the South McDougal Flats (Sundre) area with its 350+ residents. Christina, also in South McDougal Flats has contamination in her well. She explains at least 8 residents have sampled contamination in the area.
Finally, Mark Dorin, of the Polluter Pay Federation explains the decision-making system in Alberta and how it is being tampered with.
