I’ve been to Italy 3 times. I have used rail travel to travel to Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Milan and Rome. My advice is to allow extra time for travel to allow for trains not running to schedule, cancelled trains, breakdowns and so on. I do not recommend risking the train from Rome to DaVinci Airport. The train I was on broke down, was towed to the nearest station, we disembarked and waited 90 minutes for a new train. Arrived at the airport to hear our aircraft was already boarding. I had left Rome 3 hours before our scheduled departure and only just made it.

Oh wow, that would have been very stressful! We always aim to get to the airport 3 hours beforehand, just to make sure we allow for time for unexpected hold ups/

You're welcome Nic! Italians should experience Australian trains first if they feel like complaining about train services! Our services in Sydney are not as good as what we experienced in Italy and we don't have high speed trains either. Then again US trains are even worse and twice as expensive!

Hi i'm italian, just a clarification on the pricing of ticket. On regional and regionale veloce train services the price are fixed you pay the same amount even 5 minutes before departure. On faster (like frecce, intercity and italo) or higher class type train, yes, they have dynamic pricing.

Hi there, we thought that there was plenty of room for luggage. the overhead compartment would comfortably fit luggage that you would check in at the airport. We recall that there were also designated areas for larger luggage at the ends of each carriage for a number of the trains we were on.

I am 65 but very mobil. Can you wing hotel or motels and book easy if I decide to stay in a particular city and is it easy to pull around a wheeled 22" luggage? Thanks,

Hi RD! We're glad you're finding our information useful. Thanks for your kind words 😀 Sounds like you've got a great trip planned. We were in Italy in mid to late February and we generally only booked our accommodation a day or two in advance. Winging it through Italy in March is certainly possible. Regarding whether it's easy to pull around wheeled 22" luggage, that will depend on the places you're visiting. A lot of areas in Italy are very hilly, and some places might be have narrow cobblestone streets. Another thing to consider is whether your accommodation, train stations etc have a lift and whether you're ok with navigating flights of stairs with a suitcase. We have travelled carry on only for almost a decade, and we doubt we'd ever go back to checked in luggage. It's much easier to get around, you don't risk having your luggage lost or delayed by the airlines and you save on baggage fees. We'd highly recommend considering switching to carry on only as it really is a game changer for travel. If however you do prefer having luggage, we'd suggest watching walking tour videos or looking at google streetview for the areas you're interested in to get a feel for the terrain. Happy travels! Hello! Just wanted to verify with you and I'm sure it is different at different stations. We did online tickets from big terminals like Roma termini to Venice etc.. you stated we do NOT have to get tickets validated correct? Do you just like scan your barcode/show the conductor?

Hi Sean, thanks for watching. If you purchase on trainline for a regional train then you shouldn't need to validate as you will be given a specific date and time. If you bought a ticket that doesn't specify the time or says 'print this ticket's, then you will need to validate it before you board. The reason for validating is because the tickets generally bought at stations are open tickets for up to 6 months, so validating prevents the misuse of the tickets. Hi Diony Sus. The situation may have changed by now, but when we visited Italy at the start of 2022, we were told we needed to wear the N95 masks everywhere, especially on public transport. The majority of people complied with this too.

There is an error on your video: the dynamic prices are running only for high speed train! The regional trains (and also regionale veloce) has a fixed price based on the distance you have to travel: no matter if you buy the ticket 10 days or 10 min before. Indeed, the dynamic price is related only to high speed train since the price is connected to the availability of seats onboard, and the reserved seats are possible only on high speed trains (Freccie or Italo).
