Buckfast Abbey is a magnificent and still active Benedictine abbey in the village of Buckfast, near Buckfastleigh on the very edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon.
The first abbey at Buckfast was built in 1018 however that was on a different site to the one now. The first abbey on the site of today's abbey was constructed in 1134 however was demolished in 1539 with King Henry VIII's dissolution.
A mansion was built on the site and used until 1882 when a group of French monks purchased the site. The French monks then decided to rebuild the abbey and in 1902, Buckfast Abbey was once again reinstated and dedicated to Saint Mary. Although only dating from the Late Victorian period, the abbey looks much older.
As well as an abbey, there are also gardens. There is also a cafe and a shop. Monks still live on site however their homes are private, the only parts open to the public are the abbey and the gardens.
