5 Step Felling Plan that I've lived by every since I was a greenhorn on the ground! 1. Heights and Hazards 2. Lean(Good side/Bad side) 3. Escape route(45° in the opposite direction of the falling tree!) 4. Notch(80% width of the tree. Conventional/Humboldt/Open face) 5. Back Cut(Leaving 7-10% thickness of the tree left for Hingewood/Holdingwood) This is the 5 Step felling plan that I learnt on day one at a Line Clearance Tree company! I went from the bottom to the top! No pun intended! Got my white hat there and became an A Foreman as a Line Clearance Arborist! They had some of the absolute safest procedures out there. I'm very blessed to have been able to attend all of their training courses. It's stuck with me every since! From Felling trees to Rigging and Roping trees! We cut trees in very close proximity to powerlines. So it was a very dangerous job! Which is why safety was huge there! Pulling overhang and limb walking was a whole different animal when you were above thousands of volts of electricity!

I own a chainsaw no where near as professional as these on the video, I find cutting firewood very therapeutic and special, I’m recovering from a break down from stress at work and find doing manual labour really gives me a kick stay well everyone peace out.

Hey Buckin Billy Ray, I have a friend thats been cutting trees for 10 years that has caught my interest in them. Ive always loved climbing and the thought of making it a job. I found your channel and have been watching you cut trees for months now. Ive come to the conclusion that this is what I want to do. You have great information and a great mindset, and you arent opposed to sharing; Thank you for letting us in on all you do. It inspired me to get into the trade and appreciate all that goes into it. Time to be a groundsman for a while. Thanks again.

Just started watching your videos....by far my new favorite channel. Your positive and we'll spoken. I am a homesteader from Lebanon Maine and I do alot of cutting. I just got a wood boss portable mill this spring. I have alot of big oak and pine to take. Some of them lean pretty good. I've been watching alot of videos on stepping can't wait for the rain to stop so I can give her a go.

First of all: Why would ANYONE give a thumbs down on this video? That just baffles the heck out of me. I just don't get it. Now, Buckin' I thank you for the information. You know, lot's of people would never share this information with others. I know this from personal experience. Not with tree cutting, but other venues. They would not tell you anything. "Let em figure it out for themselves" they would say. I hate that. Especially when it comes to doing things could potentially kill you!! I have always enjoyed helping people and sharing information with them in order to help them out with something, and watching them get better at doing it, and even sometimes better that I can. Anything. I take my hat off to you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Thanks Billy. Jim

This comment is on point. They dislike because they want to save a tree. Burning gas in the saw is bad for the environment. These men are capitalist bastards charging money and killing trees and environment. Those same people think electricity is magic and their hot tub is manufactured useing fairy dust and there Tesla makes the world cleaner and the production and mining of the ore was on another planet that can sustain itself by itself.

Billy Ray - I have an axe (never used) - i don't have a chainsaw, but I love watching you - you fascinate me you are great. I love watching and listening to you. love you too man ! I feel like I could drop a tree - having watched so many of your videos. Your excitement in contagious. Keep doing what you do - you are the most entertaining and informative channel on my TV.. I must say you make it look so easy - but I know the knowledge you possess has been learned through years of practice and experience's. Initially I just wanted to see how to cut a tree down - but have learnt so much from you since. You are an education.

Buckin Billy! You have made a connection with me. Yes, I cut down some for firewood, some to use for the frames of a sailboat, some because I needed room for my house and garage. Now there are some dead ones that have to come out before I build. It used to be a triumph to me, now it is sad that it had to come down. I definitely use the wood, I very much appreciate the gift God has given me. Your kitchen counter raw edge is unparalleled. That piece of wood is proof of God. Also, that is a very good point about small notches leaving more room for the wedge.

After receiving chemo and radiation 3 yrs ago for a stage 4 cancer scare i started putting butter in my coffee to get more good fat in my diet, since then i use butter always. Fat is more essential than carbohydrates thus the keto craze. Cinnamon and grass fed whey protein etc etc, all kinds of good things to add to coffee to make it more like food. Organically grown beans fresh ground is scrumptious. I am lucky and blessed to have had an experienced personal trainer/friend that guided me through recovery. And my saintly mother who is gone 2years now. Thanks Buckin for being my cool uncle that i never got to meet until this KZbin channel was found. Your decisive clarity is what keeps me coming back. And i will be looking for the rematch with Lil Buckin... He's a touch opponent.

You helped me out. I cut small dead red pine down by my house about 3 years ago. Too small to wedge until I got the saw far in on the back cut so I ended up pinching the saw. Couldn't get the wedges in at that point and had to hook up a pulley system and pull it with my truck. It came down but I should have driven the wedge in at an angle like here. Thank you billy Ray!

I'm a new commenter but am absolutely loving the combination of tree work and messages of kindness that permeate your videos and your channel. When I tell people "I'm addicted to this guy on KZbin from Canada who's a logger/tree man, loves antique chainsaws and has messages of kindness" they look at me funny (I'm not in any way connected to the industry and rarely even get to run my 455 Rancher. I live near a major US city). Then they watch 2 minutes of your videos and it all makes sense to them. Keep speading the love Buckin'!

Love seeing you and your boy work together my boy is 10 and he just bought his own chain saw with his own money proud daddy that day I won’t let him run unless I’m around with him he is very careful and I’ve got all the PPE for him! He started out when he was 2 years old no joke with a machete and and there’s still stumps around with his hinge wood on them from years ago little arm and leg size trees! I love working with him he grades each one of my stumps after I cut a tree down I love it I give you tons of credit he knows you just as well as I do thanks again Buckin!

Billy Ray thanks for all great video's. The 1st video of your I saw was with a 125 super pro, which caught my attention. My Dad was a NW logger, ran Mac as long as I can remember. Your video's with those Mac bring back a lot memories for me. Dad still cuts mostly firewood now at 86 years old, you know how it is once it get in you blood its there forever. He still loves to fall and the feel of a saw in his hands. I built dad a log splitter when he retired, its on it 2nd complete rebuild and it's 4th motor....old logger never retire.

Please Don't Stop Share your Stuff and Ideas. Thanks a ton for learning away your knowledge. I've followed this channel for some years now, and I've learned SO much from how to start the undercut, to how's the best way to throw the lems down so it's better for the groundworkers to pick the lems up, and how's the best way to cut down a big tree with back-lean. Keep It Going! Lots of love from Norway

It's amazing watching a pro in their element, and it's really something special when they take the time to impart the wisdom they've gained over decades of work. Thanks BBR 😎👍

Wouldnt the newer (slower) growth be in the center of the tree? ...and therefore the 30 years should be in the center?

@@jbbolts No the new growth is the wood on the outer part of the trunk. The thin layer just below the bark is what produces new wood (and new bark) so it grows wood outwards while growing new bark, and pushing the old bark outwards like skin. As new wood grows, the inner layers die and harden into heartwood
