Missouri logger here, the bore cut is an amazing cut for trees with tension but also a good choice when in a good patch of walnut. A nice bore cut after digging down past the roots and a gentle push from a skidder gives a much nicer landing and can prevent damage to the logs from limbs crashing too hard and fast.

I would guess that the skip chain at the bar tip on hard and tough Hickory was causing the kickback as the cutters moved to each side of the tip of the bar causing the kickback as the advancing cutter took a big bite. I've got a Stihl MS660 with big bore cylinder and a 28" bar full chisel skip chain and a Huztl 660 with a 28" bar full chisel chain.I'll try and test them on a bore cut to see if the skip chain is a problem when bore cutting on hardwoods. The woods around my house are filled with Shag bark and Smooth bark Hickory trees.I was kind of expecting the Wood-Mizer to get a good workout cutting Hickory slabs :) Enjoyed the video!

Always enjoy watching and learning. I have a 100+ yr old oak that fell on my property in Texas I have to get cut up. Some branches are 73" circumference, 57" c., some 32" wide x 32" deep, and others that are as much as 18" thick and long. The base was 4' across and about 11' to the big crotch, but it looks like too much rot to make good slabs. I'm trying to find someone who would buy it for the lumber and not have to just make a dozen or more cords of wood. Learning a lot from you and hope to tackle this later in the year or early spring if I can't find someone who will look at it and make something with it.

Never watched Ray Smith, a great video the man knows his logging, and the expressions are spot on entertaining. I was very surprised that this man as talented that he is with a saw does not advocate any personal safety equipment. Unless he is wearing ear plugs, nothing. Ray perhaps some discussion on safety would be well received from your watchers. I am on my soap box here because I had wheeled my saw in the same way until I got clipped bad by the saw and now chaps / glasses / steel toed boots / ear muffs / and helmet on most of the time. Anyway no offense intended.

Charles Smith Raker height comes standard on most chain at 0.025 and there are gauges to give you that height. Buckin' uses the Husqvarna gauges that you can get online or from any Husky dealer. They are specific for the pitch of chain but on an 034 I am guessing 3/8 (0.375). However, fallers grind/file their chains and set their rakers based on personal preference and experience. I have found the Husky raker gauges to be far superior to the softer metal Stihl and Oregon gauges. Carlton had good gauges if you can find them on Ebay or a flea market. Just make sure they are for your pitch of chain

Buckin' You know we love you and Hogan. You've been lucky so far with only one serious injury but PPE might save your life or your eyes someday. Please do it for your family and followers. On a professional matter, when you bore cut that cherry, is there a reason you cut the strap from outside instead of just continuing the bore cut all the way out?
@MartyInTheWoods5 жыл бұрын
@@obxkoastie8170 you cut the strap from outside, to prevent your saw getting stuck and taken by the falling trunk. In Europe they teach you for that exact reason, to cut the strap from an angle. Watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3SbdGZ-jreCbpI
@MartyInTheWoods5 жыл бұрын
@Indigator Veritatis cutting the strap on an angle allows you to stand more upright while executing the cut with stretched arms, minimizing the danger you put yourself in. The root area is cut at right angles for several reasons. First, it gives you more precisision seeing the cuts from the side to match them up. Second, you lessen the thickness of the trunk, so it's easier to work with a shorter bar and third, the root would need to be cut after felling anyway to make the trunk more evenly shaped for transporting. There maybe more reasons, but I know only those three ;-) This is done for valuable trees mostly where time is not of essence. Like straight grown beech or oak etc.
@MartyInTheWoods5 жыл бұрын
@Indigator Veritatis You are welcome, no worries ;-) Yes, the strap is small enough, the actual back cut is of course perpendicular to the grain of the wood

Interesting one went well one didn't. I tried making a bore on an old ash tree and it was spitting the bar, I'm assuming it was my rakers being off then.
