We're building a wildlife pond to boost the wildlife and maximise biodiversity in our patch of woodland in North Wales. Part 2 of this series sees Matt working solo in the woods to buck up the trees we felled in the first episode. The key was to go slow and steady to allow me to continually judge the compression and tension amongst the tangled mass of fallen beech trees. As ever, the ultra reliable @husqvarna 550XP mark 2 made short work of the big stuff and kept me working all day. I deliberately kept the rounds of timber extra large as Finn and I will be using them to build a perimeter wall around the pond in Part 3.
As promised, here's the link to part 1 if you're interest in checking this out:

Oh dear!!! Make more videos fast....i think ive watched them all! I have learned from them....hard to teach a 61 yr old something new, but you have, ty❤. The love in your family is such a blessing. Kids can learn at such a young age. Here in the U.S. they coddle them too much. Ty for being amazing parents.

Hi Debbie, thanks so much for posting such an amazing comment and it's awesome to hear you've enjoyed working through our back catalogue. I totally agree that it's almost never too young to get kids learning, especially when the great outdoors is involved, so that's what we're doing and bringing along anyone who wishes to join us - and we've had the pleasure of some really lovely people doing this. Regarding more content, we are trying to aim for weekly uploads as best as we can and the next one is coming out today in a couple of hours, so hopefully it'll be there for you when you wake up on your side of the Pond. Thanks again and we hope you have a lovely Sunday and week ahead. All the best, Matt, Finn and Ada 🙏🙂👍

Thanks Philip, glad to hear you enjoyed it and even learned something 😀 Finn will be back with me next week when we use the rounds of wood to build the walls around the pond. Hope you have a great week and thanks for commenting - the support you give the channel is really appreciated 👍

Hi Em, hope you've had a great weekend - no doubt you and the kids made the most of the decent weather today and were out and about. Yes it was a tough day in the woods but I love it, and I was pleased with what I managed to get done. Next week is Finn and me using this cut up timber to build the walls and so I've got a bit of company again. How's things going with your pond? Hope you have a fantastic week 👍

Idk much about your channel and how far you are but from my perspective if you don’t already have a saw with an 18 to 20 inch bar on it may be worth getting one for your saw as it looks hard work for cutting through that beach other than that looks good good work

Hi Seth, thanks for watching and commenting. It's funny you've mentioned the bar length as I've just responded to another comment saying I'm in process of getting a 20" bar as I recognise the limitations of the 15". I'm only an amateur and so only have the one saw, so getting another option on the bar length is the way I'm going to go. Thanks for your positive comment about my work. All the best, Matt

Hey... Not complaining, just saying ~ Odd not seeing your little ones by your side. Dad did an awesome job on those trees! If one has a fireplace, xlnt supply of wood. Take extreme care and remain healthy. Regards to Finn and Miss Ada. 👍👍

Hi Frank and Angel, yes it's the first one ever I've not got at least one of them with me, but it was school day and despite Finn's insistence I should be prioritising his woodland education over his academic one, he and Ada headed to school while I headed to the woods. He'll be back next week though to build the walls and then Ada will be helping us with the digging in the episode after that. Hope all's good with you both over there. All the best, Matt, Finn and Ada 🙏👍

Love that you’re “ doing forestry “ but what a waste of beech … great firewood there … also you could have done with a more powerful saw and a longer bar to speed that job up massively ! Why were the felling cuts / stumps so high ? 2 feet high ? Are you new to felling and chainsaw work ?
@WoodlandShrimps
@WoodlandShrimps 11 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for watching and commenting. I'm quite happy to answer all your questions, but I think it's worth me pointing out I don't believe I did say I'm "doing forestry", but instead talked about woodland management. My take is these 2 are not the same thing, as forestry work is about putting a purely monetary value on the timber and so the goal is for maximum extraction for maximum return, but we're focusing on other values within the wood, in this case its value to wildlife, with higher volumes of dead wood enhancing the health and biodiversity of any woodland. However, I'm totally with you on the performance of beech as a firewood and we sold significant amounts of it last year for firewood to help fund the start of the restoration of the woodland. However, this current pond building project is all about biodiversity, which is why all this timber is remaining in the woods. I also agree that a more powerful chainsaw would help, but as an amateur I've only got the one. Regarding the longer bar, I'm in the process of buying a 20" one as I recognise the 15" has its limitations. Regarding the high stumps, this was intentional as these will form the fence posts for the walls of timber rounds that will enclose the pond. We talk about this briefly in part 1, but it will all become apparent in the next episode that'll be out on Sunday. In answer to your final question, I wouldn't say I'm new to felling/chainsaw work as I've been doing it for a couple of years, but then I'm purely an amateur and am certainly not claiming to be an expert. Again, I talk about the basic training I have done in part 1. Hope you come back again and watch the pond taking shape over the next few episodes, as this should explain the reasoning behind some of the steps taken in this one. All the best, Matt

Your going to destroy your back over time if you don't adjust your technique. Take up a boxer's stance, left leg in front of the right. Bend your knees and sit down into the cut. Get in nice and close, your standing too far away from the cut. It's like your afraid of the saw.
