I'm redoing a cheap old couch that I love in spite of being so very cheap. I'm using sinuous springs bridged with wire, but for a split second I considered trying to do an eight way tie. It's really lovely to be able to see the whole process.

I just took the bottom out of my rocking chair. The upholstery straps are cris-cross wire with individual springs. The vertical wire is good and intact. But the cross wire hooks into the frame of the chair are broken off. So basically I have a what you are using. I am wondering if I clean the metal ends up, could I tie the springs like you are doing? The springs are in good shape as is the wire that it is attached to, or would you buy 3 new strap springs? Having a hard time finding some at a reasonable price.

I love your videos. It so easy to see what you are doing. How do I tie in an edge wire for the front only of an old settee? What gauge is the wire? It was pretty much ruined when I found it, stuffed with straw and springs hanging out the bottom. I've just sewn the springs onto the webbing.

HI, I've found suppliers of similar materials as used by you on-line. I've also watched other reupholstery videos on youtube. No one does it authentically as you do; not even close. I have refurbished many things (I enjoy it) but am no professional. However, I do recognize quality when I see it and am happy to watch your other videos after seeing you reupholster the mission rocker. I find it, weirdly, relaxing. (I do not have this same enjoyment watching "hacks.") Perhaps because you have a relaxed approach; this is not to imply that you are carefree as I see you as being very thorough, careful and professional. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Try an area upholstery shop. Ask for Ruby Italian hemp spring twine. You can get it in a one pound ball. Seems there is also a DIY Upholstery Supply online.

what is the purpose of the string on the springs? is it to help it hold in place so they don't move?

In case others wonder, seems the reason for this is to connect all the springs together so they move as a single unit and it also gives the seat its shape. Because of this, I suppose it would be worth keeping in mind that you can over/under tie them which will affect the bounce?

Absolutely relaxing video. I am attempting to restore a mission style armchair. It is an early 20th century Stratford Chair Co. (Ontario) chair. It once had a gorgeous mission pattern upholstery. I am thinking on trying leather. One question.....”spring back nails” (it sounded like that’s what you said) that you used to reattach the spring bars? Is that a special nail? I have learned a lot through your videos. I have a question, have you ever uncovered a wooden chair frame that appears to have too many holes to grab the staples. If so, do you have a way to reinforce or fill the holes in the wood? Thanks in advance

This is a problem that can be hard to solve. I don't know of a good filler. If you fill the cracks with an epoxy it's hardens too much to let staples penetrate. The staples either bend or the wood splits even more. Replacing the wood is the best option. In cases where there is exposed wood finish a person can disassemble the frame, cut the top nailing portion off and add a new wood strip.

Most generally springs in chairs like these have lost resilience, are sometimes bent, maybe straps sagging. For no more than they cost and the amount of time it takes to retie them, it makes good sense to replace them.

Great videos! Thanks for holding my hand! I am willing to try this. When you buy the Strap Springs or Bar Springs, how do you measure them? My cushion box inside lengths are 16.25" in the center and 15.25" in the side. I am figuring on using 3 sets of bar springs.

Strap springs are sold "hole to hole" regarding nail placement over the rail. They can be bent inward or outward to adjust to your frame opening. They can be placed across the side rails rather than front to back if it works better with your dimensions. Most generally standard sized straps fit this style of chair front to back.

These springs are getting difficult to find. Try Van Dyke's Restorers. The double-return tying seen here is over-kill for this type of seat. Single strands are adequate. I did double for demonstrational purposes. Good luck. "Buck"

Good luck finding new strap springs. I've had them on back-order for weeks from two companies. Van Dyke's Restorer's has three lengths. I'm waiting on 17 1/2" at present... After six weeks I cancelled the other company for two sizes.

You can probably locate one by searching out any upholstery supply company. You want a "Berry Staple Lifter".

Taking the upholstery apart can takes hours and hours.... Do you use wood filler for all the previous tack holes if it gets out of hand with the wood? Thanks for you instructions.

I have put vinyl on. There seems to be some sort of vinyl trim that goes on last (where you put the tacks in). What is this called and where can I find it?

The trim is vinyl gimp I purchased 30+ years ago and is no longer available. You can cut and fold your seat vinyl, or in my video "how to make leather trimming" I show how to use binding to make a thinner and more manageable trim.

I put together a materials list of everything a few years ago but the time/labor in counting nails, measuring and cutting burlap - muslin, weighing cotton, packaging and going to the post office, etc. doesn't balance out in the end. Labor exceeds retail profit margin.

I work for the company that made those Ridgid bar seat strips as a matter of a fact I made the springs that went on them bars. Barber manufacturing in Anderson Indiana we have been making quality coils since 1893. Look us up on the web. We are a custom shop we make them how you want them,

Thanks for the information. I sometimes run into special needs. I used to get straps that worked perfectly in 20's and 30's frames. Offset rows of springs with the front one an inch taller. The rear spring was set ahead of the lumbar support rail. There have been times I've only needed the tapered coil springs and removed them from the strap.

If you're wondering about the strap springs, no, they probably are too short to fit a medallion back sofa.

Those springs were marginal when they have been bent and leaning as long, prone to break, plus they tend to lose resilience and soften. Side note, the double-return tie is over-kill on this type of seat. I used it as added demonstration.

take2rollem Strap springs. Off hand I forget exact dimensions. 17 1/2", 19 1/2", nail hole to nail hole sizes. You can bend the ends in or out to adjust to your rail opening, sometimes needed with serpantined front rails. (thanks for watching)

If you're asking about the Klinch-it tool that "fastens" springs to jute webbing, I want nothing to do with them. The clips are dangerous and bloodshed is assured... I'm surprised they haven't been outlawed. Most sincerely, trust me... Practice hand-stitching the springs. (Thanks for tuning in)

Oh the 80s....when floral tapestry was put on everything. Poor mission chair. I reupholstered an 1886 Eastlake sofa and the liner fabric was a sugar sack. Of course I left it, but the 1960s yellow velvet daisy material had to go lol

Why do upholsterers always want to replace all of the old innards when they're in good shape? I am not a fan of removing all the old material and replacing with new. Destroys the authenticity of the antique, in my opinion. Restoration, not replacement.

Alice, you are 100% off base with with your comment. There were no "inards" worth salvaging in this chair. Foam IS NOT authentic to this chair, and even at that, it was NOT in good shape. There was nothing original and worthy of restoration.
