@@racer98 The Datsun 240Z took the Jag's lovely, blood-curdling shapely bodywork to 1970s modern standards and made it even more affordable for the public to buy. A smaller 2.4-liter engine that again was an overhead-cam in-lone 6-cylinder. It was slower despite being lighter (150 bhp hauling 500 fewer pounds of weight.) But it was much better built thus superior quality compared with the XKE and way more reliable. After being upgraded to a V12 after 1971 the Jaguar was now as heavy as a USA-market mid-size sedan and very badly deteriorated in fuel economy. So with the oil crisis of 1973-74 (dropped from the British market after 1974), after a handful sold by British Leyland early in 1975, by spring of that year, the XKE was gone and replaced by the XJS coupe.

My high school buddy had a real solid and sweet '67 E-Type. He did a lot of performance mods to the original stock 4.2 L. And after being bored with new pistons, Iskandarian valves, springs, and cams, dynamic balanced and blueprinted stroker crank brought it up to over 5 liters and 445 HP. I was with him one day when we pegged the 160 mph speedo and using the remaining tach climb we figured she hit 186 mph before he shut it down, that, and we ran out of straight, flat road, had about 400 rpm left to the 7000 red line.

Hogwash. The XK engined Jags won LeMans 3 times in the 50s and stayed in production for 40 years. It wasn't the engine, it was the ham-fisted idiots that didn't know how to work on them that gave them a bad name. Mine is now 55 years old and runs perfectly on the original block and head.

@@MrTheHillfolk You have zero idea of the strength, I mean zero! I built an aluminum head 410 cu.in. Chevrolet, machined an adapter to connect to the jag transmission and rear end. Raised the gear ratio to 2.88 and only used 2 gears, 2 and 4th even racing. Rev it to 3000 RPM release the clutch and immediately shift to 4th. Waste of time using 3rd. Never, ever broke any drivetrain parts!!!!!

those are a good handling car . you see how far the engine is set back in the chassis , even farther than a datsun Z car or corvette . and the seats are real far back , close to the rear axle . it does'nt exibit much body roll and it goes through the corners a lot cleaner than all the other cars i have seen in his videos . their driver did'nt have to induce power oversteer to try and point the front end where he wanted it to go , because it didnt plow much it obviously has pretty much neutral handling . the equal length double wishbone suspension is supposed to be the best for handling , that's why they use it on all-out race cars , like formula one and indy cars

Fully balanced twin overhead cam engine?! No wonder they were such performers. Along with the IRS, as there was nothing American made with that kind of suspension and associated handling, as most were straight line muscle cars. Those Jag rear suspension units are highly prized by any hotrodder that knows about them. Great platform w/ inboard mounted disc brakes and a nearly bullet proof diff., all caged in a steel member that could be fitted easily into just about any chassis you had.

I think, or at least hope, that they lock up the brakes in the footage for dramatic effect and actually brake properly for the actual testing, since they always talk about heat buildup and fade, and when you lock up the brakes they don't heat up as there is no sliding friction on the brakes, just the tires. On the plus side, fully locking the brakes like that can show if the cars have a tendency to go sideways from locking the rears but not the fronts.

This is not a '68 model E-type. Triple SUs. covered lamps, toggle switches on the dash, winged knock-off hub nuts, NOT a series II, not even a 1 1/2. Strictly series 1 prior to the changes.

@@slugworth63 I've owned several and worked on more and can say the series 1 1/2 changes were running changes, as were virtually every change through out the cars lifetime. You can only say generally the change was made on car number such and such, but there were cars with mixed upgrades depending what they had that day. They used up all the older parts before moving on.

It's not a brake test if you always peg the brake pedal into a 4 wheel lockup in every video. It's more of a "tire skidding test". Threshold braking was very well known in the 1960s but they almost never used in in these corny videos. I do like this video series, though.

Some English cars had great build quility, such as the Rover P5. Truly a tank of a car. But most of them had some flaws and aren't exactly impressive when it comes to quility, fit and finish, and engineering perfection. A 1968 Jag XJ was absolutely no match for a Mercedes-Benz W108/W109. Even the 1968 BMW E3 was a better car overall.

Frank Burns You can find that precision and perfection in many Jags but not in all. In a 68 Jag Mark 2 or in a 68 Jag S 3,8, in the MK7, the XKE you'll find it for sure. Wooden dashboards, Chrome spokerims, top breaking performance, car balance while fast cornering, smooth gearbox and a suspension that made this cars easy to handle even if you'll push the pedals to the ground. I love US Muscle Cars and owned a second generation Camaro, a 70 Eldorado.... but if you face the facts you see in these Lindemann road tests that a stock Jaguar XKE beats the greatest us muscle car shelby Mustang 500 in every way, 7 days a week. What happens if you compare Steves legandary Jag XKSS to the legandary Shelby GT 500? I think we all know... But who whants to compare Betty Boo with Marilyn Monroe ? Take both ;-)

Frank Burns A Jaguar's build quality depends on the year it was built -- specifically, who owned the company at the time. From its beginning in 1922 to its amalgamation with British Motor Corporation in 1966, Jaguar's founder Sir William Lyons insisted on leading-edge engineering, world-class styling, and very good build quality for the time. The trouble started when the company amalgamated with BMC, and later, British Leyland. The socialist workers' union was in a running battle with inept management, and cars were just thrown together. In addition, the parts suppliers provided the factory with shabby components -- Lucas electrics being a prime example. Things didn't get better with Jaguar until the company went public in 1984. They were bought in 1990 by Ford, who pumped billions into new models with top-notch engineering and build quality. But Ford couldn't sell a significant number of Jaguar cars because the brand had been so badly devalued. Ironically, by the late '90s Jaguar rivaled Lexus in owner satisfaction. Ford gave up and sold the company to India's Tata Motors. As it was under Ford, engineering and manufacturing remained 100 percent British. Design chief Ian Callum penned the F-Type, rightfully hailed as the E-Type's worthy successor. His full-sized XJ sedan was a match for the Germans in engineering and, as in past decades, a couple of generations ahead in sex appeal. I'm on my fourth Jaguar, a 2001 XJR, the sporty version of their big sedan. With an aftermarket supercharger pulley it gives around 400 hp at the crank. The car is approaching 150k miles and remains tight, fast, and reliable. I have it serviced at a non-dealer Jag specialist who is both honest and exceptionally skilled. (Continental Imports, Oakland, CA). The 1970 E-Type roadster I owned many years ago was a dog because it was built under British Leyland ownership. But the three XJs I've owned since then have given me outstanding value. I always use the same strategy when shopping for a Jaguar: Research the model I want thoroughly, get my service shop's advice about what to look for, find a one-owner car for sale by its owner (using Craigslist or eBay), make sure all service records are included, have the car inspected by my shop, and verify the car's history on Carfax. My 2001 XJR was $83k new. I bought it with 80k miles on the clock in 2008 for $12.5k. You can find one like mine from a private owner today for around $4k. One word of caution: Don't buy a Euro luxury car unless you know of a non-dealer shop to service it. Find one through your city's branch of the national car club.

It's funny watching that thing do the cone slalom after seeing a 4000lb Charger do the same thing with a whole lot less body roll and swinging about and a whole lot more power! American cars handle better than they're given credit for.

Matt Arnold Even better is the land yachts like the impalas. In one of the impala vids the front tire is almost folded off the rim in a corner, the handling is hilarious! It is actually surprising it did as good as it did.

Matt if you listened to the guy in the video you would hear that they SHORTENED the space between the cones for this test to 45ft and still ran the test at 55 mph.

The driver is quick but too much tail sliding, especially on the track. He is NOT doing four-wheel drifts, which are way more subtle and what the car was designed for. A true four wheel drift is barely discernible, all four wheels using their slip angles to generate more lateral g-force than if driven using their tires’ conventional traction. There’s a great video here on KZbin of Juan Miguel Fangio driving a Maserati sports car around a track, in the mid-50s. The greatest race driver of all time, and he wrings every possible mph bout of that Maser through beautiful drifts, F1 style for the day.

I was a kid and now own 3 of these...... How funny It sounds like a 289 mustang gt350 shelby.... The braking sounds like the Flintstones and they HAD to throw clorox on the track to make thos tires smoke I guess they were paid to dub it. Funny stuff!

Never saw a Jaguar that could smoke the tires. Someone threw a special gearset in that one for the press knowing there would be no top speed testing. The XKE's would barely chirp the tires lightly before falling flat on their face due to lack of torque and highway gearing. Also had a nasty wheel hop once the suspension released. They were always slooooow off the line.

Looks like a 1967 model not a 68. Still has glass covered headlights and spinner hubs on the wheels. Both items were deleted on the 68 models due to new U S safety regulations that took effect for the 1968 model year.

damn the brakes of this car were good!all the american cars tested needed around 211 ft to stop from 70mph , this one only needed 169ft. A 2015 mustang gt with massive pirelli p0 needs 157 ft according to car and driver, that s a 3 meter difference.....doesn t seem to be realistic...

In my opinion. The way i look at in North America cars where " over weight, big boxed gas guzzling, lemons. I've been driving for 40+ years.
