I believe that up until they shut down the foundry had kept all the wooden patterns going way back. It appears all the patterns were discarded when it shut down. Interestingly, although there were only six engines made, there were a number of variations, one was cast iron, at least one was open deck (like the production V12), others closed deck, etc. I can't remember the variants now. One was used to trial a 60 degree V8 concept! I do not know whether these prototype castings would have been cast at the same foundry as the production castings. The guy who runs Building the Legend, bought one of the original six engines, complete sans fuel injection off German eBay. I believe it had been used as dressing on a Jaguar display stand or some such thing.

Jaguar suspension was fantastic. I remember stripping and building it on an XJ6 roller bearings instead of rubber bushes, inboard discs less unstrung weight, drive shaft used as one of the wishbones less weight again, trailing links to keep in in line. All in a compact frame with Differential brakes and twin coil springs each side, all isolated from the car by rubber bushes it did float along.

First time I saw this car was in the Gran Turismo (5 I think) game many years ago. Fell in love with it. Prefered it in the British Racing Green. What a stunning car! The workmanship looks out of this world. My father worked for an engineering company in Markyate, North Hertfordshire in the UK from about the mid 50s until he retired around 1990, and told me of some of the more interesting jobs he had worked on. One of them being machining the prototype blocks and heads for the Jaguar V12 when it was still a 4 cam unit. He also machined the block and head of the engine Stirling Moss used in his last race when he crashed at Goodwood.

I've still got the commemorative bottle of wine that the club got made for the occasion, signed by Norman himself. Of course, the wine doesn't exist any more. There's a great guy down in the South Island of NZ who built at least 1 XJ13 replica. It was a pretty faithful replica as far as I can remember, all hand built using wooden bucks etc. He also made superb C-Type replicas.

Grace Space and Pace. My brother has an XJ-13 replica. Not to this level, but still awesome. Full aluminum chassis, 6 piston front calipers - with provisions for a 2nd caliper at each wheel. 450HP isn't a lot today, but in a 1700 lb car (with fluids) -its truly next level power. Big issue is getting tires for 15" wheels that can handle that power to weight. And fitting big brakes. Thus, he runs 18's on the track, the 15's are strictly for show.

Just to let you know Jay, I'm praying for you and Mavis. In my family, it was my mom's father. I did my best to listen to his stories, even the tenth time, with interest. Some day, I might do the same thing. God Bless.

I was at the Monterey Historics in 1992 when Jaguar was the featured manufacturer and the XJ13 was there. They tried to a demonstration lap and the car broke down half-way around the track. I laughed so hard. Still it's a beautiful car.

I was lucky enough to be at Pebble Beach when the original was shown. It was displayed in an area set off from the other cars and I happened to see it before heading out to see the rest of the field. Seeing that car first pretty much rendered seeing all the others moot as I couldn't quit thinking about Jag's masterpiece. I was glad to see that the owner of this car opted for leaving the fender mounted rearview mirrors off as they were the only thing that, to my eye, detracted from the lines of the original. Just stunning.
