Budapest - a film photography trip

Hi, this is a vlog form a weekend bus trip to Budapest, Hungary in August 2023. This time I’m field testing for the first time a Nikon rangefinder camera. We've travelled through Slovakia and visited not only Budapest but also a beautiful town of Szentendre.
Since it was an organized trip I didn't have my usual creative freedom so I find this vlog a little different than usual. I was working out my ways with Nikon S3 and mostly getting comfy with the camera. I also borrowed @alagorska FM3a for a couple of color shots.
My photographs were shot on Double X with orange filter and developed in XTOL 1+1. @alagorska color photos were shot on FM3a with 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens on Kodak Gold developed in ECN-2 process.

I live in Budapest and it was a joy to watch your video. You had this trip a year ago, it took a while for you to publish it 😂 You recorded the video and taking gorgeous photos meanwhile. you did a great job.

@@miklosnemeth8566 There’s quite a bit going in my everyday life for the past year or so and KZbin is just a hobby but I’m getting back on track and hopefully by the end of the year I’ll be up to date. There are a couple vlogs from around the world coming soon 😀

17:58 you are excellent in composition. It is really tricky to maintain verticals and horizontals on film, even on digital. Unless, you are cheating 😄 with the digital scan, but my understanding was that you don't manipulate/adjust your scanned images. I've never been in the parliament part of the building, when I was a university student I visited the library alot, but never where the politicians are.

Hi, I loved the video, thanks for making it. I’d like some advice, please. I will be visiting Budapest for a few days later this month but am concerned about the photography laws in Hungary. I understand that it is illegal to take a photograph without getting permission if a member of the public is in the image. Should I be concerned? What was your experience? Thanks.

@@Rick-rf7om hey, glad you like it! I’d say generally in Europe, unless you’re going full Bruce Gilden on people, nobody would mind honestly. There’s plenty of tourists taking pictures and if you act like one you’ll be fine. Just don’t get your camera into people faces and don’t photograph police officers and you’ll be fine :)

Hey there would love to get your opinion on how you felt using both the nikon s3 and fm3a in comparison in terms of how they felt overall? like which would you prefer to bring on future trips or out on a daily basis. I have the fm3a and considering to get a s2 with 50mm 1.4, i held a nikon sp but it felt bulkier (i assumed that rangefinders would be more compact and lighter than slrs) and seems more difficult to operate when i tried to focus or adjust the shutter speed (could be that particular models issue). Or have you tried any rangefinders that are within the nikon s3/sp range that you would recommend?

@@benjaminkoo3716 honestly, I’m not really a rangefinder guy. I like the precision of SLR - what you see in a viewfinder is what your actual image will look like. And since I don’t really crop my photos I like to have that in-camera control of my framing. S3 will be bulkier than FM3a, it’s more similar to F, F2 (a pro line of camera). FM line is more compact and it’s really small. S3 is a true vintage camera - focusing is not the most comfortable, the rangefinder patch is not of the brightest and the camera is solid but heavy. FM, or any Nikon SLR in general will be more user friendly I think. It doesn’t mean S2 or S3 is bad, it’s special, but you have to love it for it’s quirks. I heard some good opinions on Bessa R line which will be in the S2 price range. Check this one too. But even when it comes to Leica, it can be small with a pancake lens like Color Skopje 35, but when you attach a bigger lens and a lens hood it isn’t much smaller from FM3a.
