When Chinese Buddhist authority John Blofeld stayed in Shatin in 1949 he introduced me to Mr.Woo of a law firm in Icehouse street. Mr.Woo invited me to the temple of the Buddhist Pureland and Esoteric Associations in Happy Valley, as I recall. I was allowed to film some of their ceremonies in 1960. This is the footage I have. (I have been informed of the following meanwhile: What you are seeing here are representatives of the Mantra School for Lay Buddhists in Hong Kong (which still exists) and yes they ARE doing a memorial service for their founder. They are an offshoot of the ancient Shingon school in Japan.)Warren Lee (see below) informed me: The picture on the shrine was the founder of 香港佛教真言宗居士林at 9 Tai Hang Road,he was a Arjeli of 豐山派真言宗 named as Lai Yeut Jang(黎乙真)大阿奢梨。I met the lady in white in 1949 when I was introduced to her by lawyer Woo of Icehousestreet. I was permitted to take this film at the time on condition that I would show it to the public. I have fulfilled my promise in presenting it on television and KZbin.

Am an Indian that too from far south of India. I found the gestures what we Brahmins do during our prayers/ceremonies in this video 😳 Am drawing inspiration from you, the now nonagenarian 🙏🏽 Wish you good health ❤️

The lady in white doing the ceremony was my Grand Aunt. She was a daughter of my Great Grand Father, Mr Chau Tung Seng (周東生), a Chinese merchant in Hong Kong and younger sister of my Grand Father ranking the 23rd in the family. She passed away in her 80's in the 1990's.

Great to have this information. I have met your great aunt a few times in Hong Kong in 1949 and 1961. She was so kind and helpful in showing me the temple and making films there.

MichaelRogge Indeed she was a very kind person and devoted her entire life to Buddhism and education. I used to have a picture of her when she was in her 60's but could not find it anywhere after my family moved about 20 years ago. My family would go visit her at the shrine and to worship the Buddha and our ancestors few times a year from the 60's to the 90's. To add a bit more information about my Grand Aunt, she changed her name to 周塵覺 after she became a devoted Buddhist.

Hello Marco, my great grand father happened to be an elder brother of your great grand father 東生先生, who was the 10th in the family. The name of my great grand father was 石泉 and was one of the sons of 伯歧 who had been best known as 榮祿大夫. Our ancester came from 江蘇 later resettled in 南海沙螺洞良坑 village which is now around 順德機場 and the related areas. I have done some research about Mr.周東生先生 since he was so populer known due to the novel 廿載繁華夢 by 黃小佩 in the late Ching dynasty. It is the best to my knowledge after all the research that Mr.周東生 was actually a well known scholar in Hong Kong and a man of great charity both in Canton and Hong Kong. He had been honoured a doctorate degree (in HK?) and a 四等嘉禾勳章 by the 北洋政府. Please keep in touch if you are interested for more information regarding your family history.

this is historic footage, leave it to a good museum, anywhere, even Holland, where it will be safe and treasured. Wow, Blofeld !

The pictures on the web were taken when he was over 90. The picture in the memorial shows him in traditiional Chinese civil service costume, which wold date it about 1900. There are images of his son and great granddaughter on the web, but there will be other pictures in books and archives. He was a VERY big VIP. Shouson Hill in HK was named after him he had a mansion there

I have been hoping that someone would recognize persons in my pictures or the Buddhist group they are representing. But, alas. In fact I have had many responses to my clips but none of people who recognized themselves.

I doubt whether it is him. The pictures on Google images of Sir Shouson Chow do not look like the person in the photo on the shrine.

Freeze frame ar 4.00. Anyone guess ? He looks familiar, so I think it might be Sir Shouson Chow. amazing man and certainly prominent enough to get high profile ceremonies done, Devout Buddhist, too, and philanthropist who gave huge amounts of charity to schools, orphanages etc. His son was the lawyer and playboy Chau sik nin. This looks like a ceremony marking a long period after the person's death. Sir Shouson died 1959. Someone should check his photos.

Does the film play on reverse side? The characters of 密嚴淨土 do not look right.

Can anyone recognise the man they are honouring ? Is it a post funeral memorial service ? Did he endow a school ? That would explain the kids and fit in with his status.
