After the Indus Valley Civilization and Maurya period, this is the second part of tracing the roots of Indian art. In this film, we see the establishment of the fundamental norms of the art to come in later centuries.
One of the oldest known sacred forms in India is the Stupa, of Buddhist and Jaina monuments. Recent excavations near Nalanda have also unearthed a large mud stupa of the 8th to the 10th century BCE. This may have been made by the Ajivikas, another deeply ascetic sect.
The story of Indian philosophy and its art is the story of the constant search for the truth which is eternal and beyond the passing shadows of the material world which we see around us.
The forms and attractions of the world around us are termed as ‘Maya’ or ‘Mithya’, an illusion. We remain caught in a web of ‘Samsara’ or illusion. The aim of the philosophic path and its art is to lift the veils of this illusion, for us to see that which is true and lasting.
This film covers the making of early stupas and their sculpted railings.
