I mean Leon had some pretty tumultuous relationships in his life. Especially around the time he wrote this song. Maybe it's naff to you but most of Leon's songwriting is very sincere and I know it's not popular to be sincere anymore but hey, for what it's worth, I love it. It falls into the same sort of naked sincerity as something like Jason Isbell's If We Were Vampires. Cheers friend-o.

You don't spend well over a decade (14 - 15 yrs) with John Mayall and the blues breakers and not be a phenomenal guitarist with great vocals. Buddy Whittington ranks way up my list as all-time best , another fantastic Texas bluesman.

Aah dear Buddy, one of the greats. A true style original, a superb tunesmith and lyricist, one of the very few that has it all at his fingertips. A loyal servant to John Mayall and his longest serving sideman. "probably the greatest Bluesbreaker of them all" said his boss and I am not going to disagree for one moment. He played for me on this tour just after he had dropped off the undercard supporting Gary Moore. he was fabulous. I got to know him better when he came back to Bluefunk at the back end of 2012. A real gent. He just didn't want to stop playing. And kept shouting "Can I do one more Garry" How do you refuse a truly great player that wants to play for you? It was gone midnight (way past the club curfew) when he finally stopped. A very special night. Haven't managed to snag him since, though I constantly try. I hope he is well and I will never stop dreaming about him returning to play for us again.

Gary Moore played at this particular gig, can't remember if it was the whole of the second half or the first half. This venue is only 7 or 8 miles from where Gary was living then. I was lucky enough to play a couple of numbers with Buddy the next time he played here. A wonderful friend! Sadly Roger Cotton on the keyboards died this month, a great loss.

What a night that was! I was stood next to Gary and his girl through the first half. He got up after the break and went onstage. Afterwards, saw him put his Geetar in the boot of a taxi and head off home! Cool as! We all went for a curry down the road, only to see Buddy and the Band pull up in their white Transit looking for some food later! Cracking night...!

I am not sure but Leon was collaborating with Freddie King at that time and probably thought that who else better than Freddie to sing the song and I think he wasn't wrong. God Bless them both.

Perhaps a little more enthusiasm from the audience wouldn't have gone amiss. The band just played the most feeling blues and the ladies and gentlemen of the audience seemed to fall asleep. That was two brilliant solos with Buddy at his best
