Maybe you can try super16mm lenses with c mout some of them forks even M4/3 sensor. I personally almost finished my own anamorphic single focus adapter( ISCO GOTTINGEN optics ,Ultra ANAMORPHIC MC 2x)with has same princeple as on phone and drone anamorphic adapter and it super compact and works even with 20mm T1.9 so it dont need lens support becase its even more compact than what yuo find in market today for beeing 2x anamorphic.

I was just wondering if anyone else had thought of this as a creative way to use phone adapter lenses. Very thorough and thoughtfully done video on the idea. Well done 👍. I ordered the moondog labs lens and some adaptor rings the other day. Plan on trying it on gh5 with an SLR magic 25mm cine.

A 3:49 you show a Sumicron 28 on an A7s. I have a Summicron 28 which has been largely unused since my M8 shutter locked. I know that it is about the most troubling lens for colour shifts and edge smearing with none Leica bodies, but since the used price of an A7S has dropped so low, I have been tempted to get one just for my Summicron. What is your experience with this combination? I am also experimenting with Phone anamprphic adapters, but for my 16mm film camera.

Thanks for the question! Sorry to hear about the m8... The summicron I have is the 1st gen. asph version, and it can suffer in the corners especially the closer to infinity with objects in the corners. For closer wide open portraits on the A7s it doesnt come up as much though and on film its a beautiful lens! The A7s has been a great camera over the years. It gives you the flexibility of high ISO but the body is smaller than most mirrorless full frame cameras and feels more like a little film SLR. Of course it lacks some nice modern features but depending on your use case I think it is still a viable camera! Thats so great to hear! It should work fine because of the smaller format and give you more of a super16 frame on regular 16. I just used anamorphic adapters on super 8 and will make a video on the topic soon hopefully!

@@TheWholePicture Thanks for the reply David. Mine is also the st generation, none 6 bit coded version of the 28 Summicron. It was a stunning lens on the M8. The sharpest, most vibrant glass ever. Do you see a lot of colour shifting in the corners on the A7S, or is it mostly sharpness loss? I got the GoPro anamorpic adapter, and will also need to modify it to open up the back.

Nice! I have also enjoyed using it on the m9. With a bit of a crop/crop sensor you can probably avoid some of the corner issues and get a similar experience to your m8 actually! With the 28 and 35mm summicron it seems to be more of a focus shift that causes smeared corners and maybe light fall off but not necessarily color shifts going off of memory. There are some modifications that can be made to cameras like the A7S but I havent tried it myself. This was something I was very interested in and have talked about lightly in some videos, but even on film some of these lenses exhibit corner imperfections. It is less pronounced and often times covered up by the more organic nature of film but if you have a high resolution scan it can still be there at times. That being said it is dependent on the lens and some 35-28mm lenses will have issues and definitely going wider will make imperfections more likely. I see! Let me know how it goes. A lot of the 1.33 adapters are set to infinity focus so they can produce some nice results on small formats also at or near infinity. I then found adding a diopter or even in some cases a variable diopter to the front could make some pseudo anamorphic bokeh!

@@TheWholePicture I wont be buying an M9, or other digital M. The M8's shutter failure left a bit of a bad taste. The Shutter is a seiko part, and I wont be paying Leica more than the value of the body to have them service it. Luckily someone recently posted a detailed procedure to strip down the M8 to the shutter, so I will do that soon, and see if the problem is obvious and fixable. If not, there is a certain side of me which would like to hack it, and put the shutter from a russian leica copy into it :) The options for wide angles for a Beaulieu R16 are very limited, as there cant be any projection behind the C mount threads. The shutter is right there. You cant really do a super 16 mod on a Beualieu. My widest lens is a 12.5mm pentax. That is about 43mm FF equivelent. Using an anamorphic adapter will give me both a wide angle, and the 16:9 format. For my Beaulieu R16 I have a couple of small C mount process lenses. The 25 F1.4 has a tiny fron element and worked with the Small rig anamorphic unmodified. The 12.5 F1.4 has larger glass and vignetted badly. I returned the small rig anamorphic and got the GoPro version, which has a larger rear opening, but still a bit constricted. It has 4 screws on the back, so I'll open it and see if I can replace it with a new rear with larger opening and adapter to the C mount lenses. Watch this space :) I also have another Polaroid/instax hack video in the pipeline.

Yeah it is really unfortunate that some of our modern tools just might not have reasonable repairability... Its been a big factor pushing me towards cameras from the 60s and earlier. The ability to repair them, even yourself sometimes, makes them hopefully lifelong cameras! But there are so many cool cameras with digital components... C and D mount can be quite limited on the wide end. There are some lenses (kinoptik, century, angenieux, Schneider etc) that were available in c mount that are wider than 12.5 but they can be a bit costly.... The Beaulieu is a beautiful camera though! One i've been wanting to try myself. I also have a 12.5 and I'll see if my modified phone anamorphic work on it. For 1.33x 43mm FF should be clear so if you can get the rear of the anamorphic closer to the spherical lens you could get some good results! Im really glad to hear about others trying to use anamorphics in this way! The focus can so easily be on the character or bokeh but really they have these practical benefits on smaller formats!

Very well explained. Thank you. I also modded an Ulanzi anamorphic to do the same but it wasn't working until I stopped down the lens. I bought a Rockstar/Astrhori 27mm fixed 2.8, you think it could work with such aperture?
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the comment! Curious about your Ulanzi modification! Did you have to make a custom mounting solution? As far as getting more usable images, it really depends on your sensor, taking lens (including the size of the front element) and a few other factors. Beyond stopping down, you could try to get the rear of the anamorphic as close as possible to the front of the spherical lens. With my moondog labs mod, the two lenses basically touch and it seems to improve the usability of the image! I hope that helps and I'll try to get that modification video going!

@@TheWholePicture good to know, I'll try to keep it as close as possible. I've tried it on a Super Takumar 55 1.8 but the front element can't be fully covered. That's why im gonna try this 27mm, small front element, should cover entirely. If you want to see how it works just search for 'Eos M Magic Lanter Ulanzi Anamorphic' here on KZbin. I did something similar but disassembled the Ulanzi lens then removed its original mounting screw. Now it covers a bigger lens and it's free to a new mounting solution.

Depending on your sensor size you can get coverage with larger front elements on telephoto lenses but I've found the best results with mirrorless wide angle lenses with small front element. Thank you for the video using the eos m!! I have been using magic lantern lately and really like the little 22mm, I was even thinking about trying the moondogs on it so its nice to have something to test against. I expect the results will be similar, with some funky edges but at least a clear image. What Ulanzi lens are you using? On the moondogs 12.5mm that I modified, there are 2 screws that easily let you remove the original mounting threads but I couldn't see an easy way to modify the Ulanzi. Interested to hear how you did it!
