Budget DIY Fallout Shelters and 1 Prepping Item to Get Now
Preppers everywhere are looking for solutions to a possible encounter with nuclear fallout. So, here are some DIY ideas plus 1 prep you need to get now.
With the world on edge and the aspect of nuclear fallout becoming a more likely obstacle to survival, fallout shelters are something we should all be considering. What options are there if you are on a budget? Well, luckily for us, the Department of Defense put out a handbook in 1962 titled, "Family Shelter Designs".
Here is a link to the handbook: dahp.wa.gov/sites/default/fil...

Loved this. Back in 1962, my father and two brothers and myself built the A-Frame model in Las Vegas, NV. My dad put a waterfall and palm trees over it which led to the pool area as we had a split level backyard. That bomb shelter is still here, and has been many a thing since then. Great memories. Thanks!!

Sad to see you have totally bought into the Russia State Propaganda….”as average Joe American and not at all a paid Russian comment or, I urge all Americans to fear only your own government, and maybe the other half of Americans…..they are put to get you and you can only trust Russian State Media/Fox News.” Unless you are really breaking some laws or didn’t pay your taxes (and you think the government shouldn’t actually collect taxes…see what just happened to Greece when they didn’t) the government has zero desire to come to your house. Grew up near DC, and government workers are far more “The Office,” and not “men-in-black super villains.”

The under ground shelter really is the very best option , something i should point out is that you need a 90 degree turn along with 3 feet of dirt, sand or other suitable sheilding to block gamma radiation. I reccomend studying fall out shelter designs and getting aquainted with the engineering of them before starting. I have plans to build a tornado shelter based on bomb shelter design.

In the classic book Nuclear War Survival Skills, the author shows a shelter, Complete With Handmade Air Filter! Its just a ditch covered with logs. The logs are covered with building wrap and all covered with dirt. He shows you how to make an air pump from very simple materials. The filter is just for dust and is cheese cloth. I was just looking into sandbags, I am trying to figure out how to afford enough. A good one is not all that cheap, so just the bags are a significant investment if you are a paycheck to paycheck life. There are other sources of information available, go to the internet archive and search for fallout. I am in SC in a double wide, no basement. My biggest problem with the thrown together bunker is that people do not do enough research. First that lean to, you should plan on spending at least two weeks if not longer, depending on your local conditions. It should also be solid enough to be a storm shelter. Then there is breathing, the real danger is what you take into your lungs, far more than just the local radiation around you. This means filtering and replencement, making sure your CO2 levels are good. This is not a easy as it might seem. CO2 is a heavier than air gas, most people with CO2 detectors put them on a table or high on a wall like a smoke detector. Then people go to sleep close to the floor. Then there is sanitation. Even with a limited diet, if you stay inside a small room with multiple people, trust me this is going to be a problem. I have seen so many talk about porta potties and a bag system. Good luck with that. If I ever get mine built, I will be tapping into my septic system and have a toilet in there. Completely underground has an advantage, temp will stay at about 50 degrees or so. But aboveground and even below ground, sucking in outside air temp has to be allowed for. Suppose you are Magics necks of the woods, in the winter it gets cold. But also Florida in the peak of summer, unless you are underground you are going to be living in a sauna. Heat will still be of some factor even underground because you have to have air flow. The way you bring air in and take it back out again is important. Having a heat source is important. Even air conditioning might be possible depending on your solar array, assuming it survives. Even if you manage to get 3 feet of earth between you and the outside, that is just not enough. At my age and income this is proving to be interesting. Something I should have done ten years ago but life gets in the way.

Also “Walt Builds a Family Fallout Shelter” is a great video for a basement shelter. Makes my back hurt just thinking about hauling concrete blocks or sandbags down my basement steps!😄 But the alternative could be worse, hey? 😳
@robhunterart
@robhunterart Жыл бұрын
Walt builds a family fallout shelter will guarantee to give you tumors and cancer. You want a pf1000 and Walt’s shelter is pf100. Those concrete blocks are doubled up in the shelter which is only 8 inches of concrete and you need 24 inches for a pf1000 absorption rate. Do you think Walt’s design would hold a shelter ceiling 6 blocks thick? The shelter wouldn’t look so family friendly if the ceiling is only 4 feet from the floor with the rest of the structure being ceiling support to hold up all those blocks.

@PraxisPrepper 5 ай бұрын
With so many things to consider and remember when building what is pretty much a space station, I wouldn't apply "Duh!" to anyone who lets one of these sorts of things slip their minds. I don't know you, and I don't know if you're one of the very limited number of people who have ever done any of this before, or if you're one of the vast majority of people who comment on stuff but don't do any of it. So forgive me if I presume you're of the larger group. But if you ARE in that larger group, and you hopped in and actually tried to build something like this (which you should totally do if you have an interest - it's enjoyable and challenging) I'd be SHOCKED if you got it all 100% right on the first crack. When getting into something new one almost always overlooks some small (but important) detail - myself included often times. So the "Duh!" comment rings of someone who doesn't tend to trailblaze into any of this stuff so isn't familiar with the fact that sometimes when one gets into the details, the simple things sometimes get forgotten. I'm even feeling a little bit of that now because I just wrote that entire reply to the word, "Duh!" (which is more reply than it deserved) Unless... maybe the reply wasn't specifically for the emerald fox (which is a cool screen name by the way) @@theemeraldfox7779

To be properly protected from radiation, you need at minumum 36" of dirt over the shelter or 2' of concrete. Then you need an air filtration system that can filter out NBC and have a blast valve for air outlet. The door, it's fine to layer sandbags on the inside until the 48-72hr time for the fall out to dissipate, but it has to be air tight. I see what you have there and know what it is already, and it won't work as good as you'd hope. Sorry, but sad but true.

If you manage to be outside of the immediate kill zone, this statement is not correct regarding fallout. Fallout protection does not require airtightspace. That’s actually more dangerous and will expose you to carbon monoxide poisoning if staying the recommended time. You need protection from the radiated dust/fallout. Normal heap filtration will suffice for that. Biological and chemical are two different animals possibly requiring more than particulate filtration.

@@SecretSquirrel-et6dl Which is why current designs include manual KAP air handling systems BTW Carbon Monoxide is only a factor if something is burning. Shelters should not be built in areas prone to combustion and there should be no smoking or burning while in a fall out shelter. Noting the incredible inaccuracy inherent in Russian missile designs. When attacking their neighbors in Ukraine, some of their missiles hit Romania and Poland instead. In Russia's ICBM tests just last week 2 submarine launched and 2 ground launched all veered off course and had to be destroyed. To expect that suddenly their missiles will magically improve in accuracy so that they only land where Russia wanted them to land may be a little foolish.

@@SecretSquirrel-et6dl Absolutely. Back in the pre Y2K days, after the threat of Nuclear war had 'ended' thanks to the collapse of the USSR, I found a 'safe;l place to ride out Y2K nicely and spent the money to acquire it. What I did not at that time know of was a still Secret major military and civilian underground COG/C3! complex is only about 15 miles away. Only after Y2K had passed (without incident) was the location revealed. Although my location is good and I would be in fairly good shape if a Y2K or EMP event occurred (this area did 3 weeks without electricity after Hurricane Isabelle and we were just fine), the presence of the still somewhat operational C4I/COG complex combined with Russian missile inaccuracy means if a nuclear war happens a simple fallout only shelter would be of little value here. No matter how that future war shakes out, only a blast reinforced fallout shelter will provide any protection for me and those sharing it. Kearny's small pole buried deep is about the only option (beyond an Atlas of course). Of course even that would offer no protection at all if a not very accourate Russian 20 megaton war head ground bursts a mile away. I spent some time doing classified govt work within the past decade, work that exposed me to some previously unknown to me COG locations, so I know that 'bugging out to an area not already specifically targeted would require at least a 27 hour drive due to the many targeted sites scattered around this area. However, I also know that I lacked a need to know about sites more than 100 miles away and with my luck my bug out vehicle would finally park a 1/2 mile away from one due to get it/s own warhead (or 3). So for me the bug out scenario is not realistic. But I totally agree with you that the inaccuracy of Russian missiles (which sometimes miss an entire targeted country from a point blank range) causes me to just laugh at the naive comments from people who write, I don't live in a targeted area, so why should I worry about it. Equally ludicrous are those (on other threads) who write, I will survive after the fallout settles by hunting or fishing. As if deer or carp would somehow be immune to radiation.

I live one mile from a tier 2 special operations base. I think where you need to start making a fallout survival kit. I’ve never seen a video of somebody making one. But the infographics channel had a good cartoon on what you would need. The plan is to get in a sturdy building, seal off windows and doors remove and dispose of all clothing. Decontaminate try to have enough food and water for three weeks. You would need a eye, and ear protection, and a respirator. You must not let any radiation get inside your body!

Having several changes of Tyvek coveralls and shoe covers that you can get at Home Depot would be helpful to keep me from tracking radiation into your shelter. Make sure that you have a Boy Scout camp knife with a good blade screwdriver can opener etc. because you can open up cans after fall out. I've been prepping for nearly 30 years (and born in '61 remember bomb drills in schools as a kid and a few neighbors who had shelters that were built in the 50s and early 60s), but I'm relatively new to your channel. Kudos on putting out some good content, solid logical thinking of approach. But have you done a video yet on CBRN masks and Potassium Iodide? The latter two will be far more useful, affordable, practical than a shelter for most people. As I live in one of the well-known Soviet-era target zones, my friends and I have always looked at two options: A direct hit (I don't want to survive it) or being downwind of fall-out (I want to and can survive without having my world turned to hot glass around me.) And now with the recent train "accidents" with toxic fumes, I'd urge people to look around them to realize how many toxic chemicals are being used in manufacturing plants of almost all sorts. So getting a gas mask for each member of the family with both organic filters for your "simple toxins" and then CBRN filters for radioactive fallout. IF a major nuke were used half-way around the world, we might know 3-5 maybe even 7-10 days before the cloud of radiation and thus fallout or toxic rain was going to reach us. Sandbags WOULD be useful, but prepping your house to seal all doors and windows and then afterward wear your masks to go out until you know it's safe. Finally a note to those of us who have dogs: You may have the option of sealing an attached garage IF you can tape the garage doors from the outside before the event, and then teach Fido to do his business on cardboard in the garage which you can bag in contractor bags until it's safe to take-out to bury, burn, dispose of. But, you should consider the options of the basement or another room and how you can dispose of the waste. And one last note to this- in a SHTF situation. Taking Fido out to do his business might be the most dangerous thing you can do if you cannot absolutely see the perimeter far enough to know a sniper's not waiting to pick you off. Bottom line: Bomb shelters are good but should absolutely be secondary to quality masks and enough filters to supply your family for "long enough".

@instapablo7623 You don't like dogs? Then it's perfect that I have a well-trained German Shepherd to patrol my property. You worry about Fido on your wall, I'll worry about Pablo on my property. You know what they say about people who don't like dogs... Dogs can tell. If my dog doesn't trust someone, neither do I.

Yano i just got lucky and purchased some land in V.A. Its 7.67acres with a 2bed 1 bath single wide on it. It had the 3rd bedroom added on later. But there are several outbuildings and one is a root dcellar. Its a ciderblock shed about 10'X10' and has a roof that needs ot be replaced. Since im a contractor i can do the work my self. But its built into the side of a rock filled hill. The earth (rocks&soil) is up to the roof line on the back wall and runs on an angle down the sides to the from wall. I can use rocks from the sourrounding yard to add onto the front walkway and bury the roks in earth to enlarge it.Add a small bathroom with sink and toilet as the water is well water and i can run a line Add on a small generator room and a hand crank air system. Once its done i can make it so it will sleep 8adults and several kids.As its a root cellar he back ,original room would be for food/water/ammo/weaposn storage. While the mechanics like Generator and toilet would be nearer the front entrance. As its in the panhandle of V.A. its in the mountains so plenty of rock and earth to use. I could add a kitchen and larger sitting area as well. The one thing that may cost me money is some bags of concrete to help hold the rock walls in place and the roof materal. Then rent a bobcat to move dirt. Now all i need are some of those iodine tablets that keep your body from absorbing radiaton ? lol on a mission

If your gonna go through all of this you should have a method to clean up soil after the fallout subsides. Sunflows can pull radioactive isotopes from the soil and then you just harvest (ideally roots and all) and bury it in a deep hole. You might have to do this a few times before the majority of the fallout has been cleaned up. No point in surviving the initial blast and fallout just to go out and grow crops in fields peppered with radioactive isotopes.

Get a steel frame geodesic children's climbing frame. Dig a circular hole about 2-3 feet deep and 10 feet in diameter and place the steel climbing frame in the hole that just been dug. Cover over with a large durable tarp or two (similar to an IPK kit). Start to build up with the sandbags to form an Igloo style dome. Cover over with as much dirt and sod as possible. Have enough filters for the CBRN PPE for two weeks.

I think sandbags are a great idea. I have been buying them off and on for a few years now. I keep a few in my vehicle just in case. I have a problem believing sandbags are going to sell out due to the large amount of work that is put into filling them. Lets be honest, there are a lot of people who are too lazy to read a book about how to program their UV5R radio or read descriptions on boxes. A lot of people today are lazy and want others to do the work for them.

My plans are to build the plywood box design. It has many options but the biggest point is that it’s the only design in the list that specifically states that it is blast rated to a 5psi overpressure if built to spec. So fallout is one thing but being in a blast zone as well can be fatal if not accounted for.
