Hi Everyone! In the fifth episode of our 1986 Porsche 3.2 Carrera Refresh build project, Franny gets to disconnectin’ under the car. There was a lot to get done under there! We are close, but there will be a second part to this video for the bits in the actual engine bay so stay tuned for that! Let us know your thoughts! You can get the "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911, 1964-1989" here: amzn.to/2XlmYYb Also that cool Porsche Jack Pad - Domestic Aftermarket amzn.to/2RNOlF9 And that neato drain on the sump: Fumoto F309L Engine Oil Drain Valve amzn.to/2Lw9UJ6

Heidi and Franny's Garage , what do you do if you overfill your 911? Insert a tube via the dipstick tube? Loosen the filter? Or the drain plug? Thanks!
@theundergroundlairofthesqu92613 жыл бұрын
@@vincerunnerretrobikevince4212 In her case, she could just open up that Fumoto valve on the bottom of the oil tank, let some oil pour out, and then close it.
@theundergroundlairofthesqu92613 жыл бұрын
@@vincerunnerretrobikevince4212 Nothing wrong with the dipstick tube (although I don't know about the specifics of 911 oil tanks and dipstick tubes.) An oil change evacuator, or a plastic syringe with a thin plastic hose, This is a very handy suction/pumping device for a fair price: (Alas, sold out at amazon today.) Its hose is too big for a dipstick tube with with some barbed adapters you could add a skinnier hose to that hose.

12:55 If your jack handle doesn't fit, a good piece of black iron pipe from the hardware store will work, too. Even better? An impact gun! For those of you in wetter or saltier places. A bigger hammer to push the axle stub in, too, got get that outer CV to leave the hub. Heck, an air hammer can be nice, too. (Please, keep the old nut on to take the blows.) In conclusion, air tools are awesome. But so are rust free cars!

Enjoyed that. Moving the car with the axle out is usually not a good idea. OK in your case because its not moving far. In most designs the axle holds the bearing half's together. Fantastic detail. Reminds me of doing the clutch on my 997 S. Working on your own Porsche gives you even more respect for the quality and design.

Wait until we get the engine up on the yoke of the engine stand. That yoke sill also fit a 356 engine and a beetle engine. That crossover 912 with the 911 body and transmission but a 356 engine kinda sealed the deal ;)

Not sure why you have to pull fuel pump fuse if battery is disconnected? Or did I miss something? I do love your whole series. Thank you for adding great content to the community's knowledge base.
@HeidiandFranny5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hans, I am following Wayne Dempsey's advice to remove the relay or fuse to the pump. It is just a precaution in case you do hook up the battery to, say, roll the windows down there would be no chance the pump would run with the fuel system open. Sounded like a good idea to me :)

Remember to clean/coat all exposed rubber parts including CV joint boots and steering bellows with generous amounts of 303 Aerospace Protectant; multiple applications is even better. Do that and they will last.

@antn5374 жыл бұрын
Just an observation, aren't the inner ends of the CV joints typically packed with grease (I'm talking generically rather then specifically to 911s), whereas yours were completely dry?
@HeidiandFranny4 жыл бұрын
On lots of cars that is true. The 308 and the Beetle are as you said and should have a bunch of grease in the cup of the drive flange on both sides. On the 3.2 they are a little different. There is a cover over the end of the CV on the inboard side and the outboard is bonded to the actual axle. The additional grease goes inside that inboard cover.
@jamesberlo42985 жыл бұрын
I think you should have put the car on the lift with the rear hanging over (even slightly beyond the rear Wheels) and used two of the Jack Fittings on the rear only and supported them with Wooden Blocks and just secure the front of the Car with its Towing Hook / Eye to the front of the lift. the method you used was so precarious !

Here's a tip: Citrus degreaser or hand cleaner. This stuff will remove grease and oil from almost anything. Just check colorfastness before ruining something! Low to non-toxic, so you aren't absorbing all sorts of long-chain hydrocarbons, especially when using on your hands. Without this stuff, every item of clothing I have would be grease-stained. Apply it to dry clothing and be sure you don't put unwashed grease into the dryer - that kinda makes it permanent. tJust be sure to thoroughly rinse the citrus out before laundering. If you don't, you'll give the entire laundry load a citrus smell. Yuck! (I'm SO sick of the smell from decades use, but it works.)
@HeidiandFranny5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I have used that (Goop mostly) and it does work well, but I think I found something even better. Try this next time and see if it works for you... Pop into the local dollar store and grab a bottle of their finest cheap clear hand soap gel. That stuff is amazing! It works great and works faster and better than Goop. Smells better too. Then from there into the wash with a bit of power bleach and the close look new. My new go-to... F

Don’t understand why you pulled the large nut off of the wheel, and pulled the complete axle? We just tie those up and out of the way when we pull the engine. You don’t need to do all of that extra work.
@HeidiandFranny5 жыл бұрын
So they don't fowl when moving the car. Also, I was concerned with interference from the starter. If you are just pulling the engine there would be no problem... But, since I'll be doing the suspension as well, they will have to come out anyway. Just easier now. This is an extensive refresh - engine, transmission, suspension, interior, and paint.
