the grove in-between first and second rings is for blowby relief helps with better sealing and anti pre ign.. CP pistons do the same, the holes on the oil control trings is to scrape oil and let oil back into crankcase :) the chinees piston has more wrist pin support than that apm one.. If it wwere me id get the chineese ones ceramic coated on the top and slick coated on the skirts and use them :)

The black coating is a low friction material that let's the skirt ride the wall preventing piston slap on cold engine and stops the skirts of the piston from wearing down from rubbing the cylinder walls. Also the holes in the pistons by the oil rings is not for cooling. They are there to make sure the oil rings get a good source of fresh oil so they can do their job of adding oil and wiping away access oil.

One thing to note, sharp edges on the piston can make it more prone to detonation. Which might be a concern if you're want to run more timing.

Aluminum alloys used for pistons come in a wide variety, with varying degrees of copper, magnesium and silicon content. Though each element adds its own special properties to the alloy, silicon content is a prime driver in the overall characteristics of the alloy. Hypoeutectic - 11% or less silicon content. Eutectic - 12% silicon content. Hypereutectic - Greater than 12% silicon content. In the piston business hypoeutectic alloys are referred to as low silica alloys, while eutectic and hypereutectic are referred to as high silica alloys. In short, hypoeutectic alloys posses a thermal expansion rate greater than typical engine block materials. This requires running higher clearances, which affect engine noise, wear and emissions. On the up side, these alloys are strong and well suited to extreme forced induction applications. Hypereutectics have thermal expansion rates equal to or less than the surrounding cylinder. Allowing tighter clearances to be run. Unfortunately they are brittle, and less tolerant to extreme cylinder pressures. Either can be used in an air-cooled engine, as long as correct clearances are insured and the right silica content is chosen based on your requirements. Keep in mind that the terms hypo/hypereutectic does not automatically imply that the piston was forged. Hypo/hypereutectic is only a description of the alloy used. Most OEM hypereutectic pistons are cast units.
@InstaltechCarAudio
@InstaltechCarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
In general the Hypereutectic alloys used for forged pistons, do not have a thermal expansion rate lower than ductile, gray, or pig iron. In OEM applications hypereutectic pistons are often installed in aluminum blocks making use of some form of low carbon steel alloy cylinder liners. In these cases, the liner's alloy is usually tuned to closely match the thermal expansion rate of the block material. Another thing to keep in mind is that overall thermal expansion is a combination of the alloyed used and the method of manufacture. Varying casting and forging techniques can yield significantly different expansion rates from the same alloy.

People running stock piston ring gap specs could very likely be why stock piston ring lands fail often. The high temps and cylinder pressures eventually forces the rings together and when they cant expand more the ring land between them often fails. An issue quite common in Saabs running stock bottom ends on higher power. So make sure you gap the rings correctly for your ”target power level”! You might already be aware of this but its a good thing to mention just in case :)
@nicolashoyt5341

This is usually only a problem when someone has boosted an engine that was naturally aspirated originally. When you build an engine the rings come with instructions on what gap you should run for each application.

The reason Maxpeeding rods have chamfered ends is so they can be used with stock pistons. If they squared the ends like the highend rods, you would either have to machine them down, machine the piston, or use aftermarket pistons. Like the one's you have.

Hey Andrew, couple of things for your info. The top ring is called the fire ring, this controls the flame front from ignition and helps seal the chamber so the flame doesn't go further down the piston. The second ring down is the compression ring, that's the important one. The last set of rings are the oil control rings, thye literally let oil flick up the cylinder wall as the piston rises, then scrape the wall on the way down so oil shouldn't burn. The lower in the piston the compression ring is, the more balanced the piston is when ignition happens, which results in less side wall loading and wearing of the cylinder. Which is also why the coatings on the side skirts of the pistons, less wear on the bore means less wear, less likely to turn your cylinders into ovals. When you raise the boost in a car, the ring gap is the most critical, there are calculations as to how much further you need to open the gap. Don't open it far enough, and you get broken ringlands. Open it too far, and you'll get something that runs like a King's turd on your front lawn when not on boost. If the gap is too tight, the rings try to bind in the bore and create havok. Oh and should of said, AMP44 rings are OEM qualitly, they are decent rings, not cheap steel ones. FCP Engineering is American, FCP Euro is the main company. They buy rebranded Aliexpress/Alibaba stuff finished their way. It looks like your Chinese rods are all supplied by the same manufacturer, just packaged under the same name. I'm currently in discussion with one that may be able to supply forged alloy I beam rods (better for boost than H beam) that can withstand 250hp/cylinder..........and probably about the same price as yourMaxspeeding H beam ones. You've got my email if you want, I can ask ask about another set, as future proofing yours might be a good idea? As you guys know, I'm more than happy to talk you through what I know and try help you build things, so yell if you want help.

Wrong bud the top ring is the compression ring and by far the most important ring because it obviously contains cylinder pressure and transfers most of the heat from piston to cylinder walls.The top rings job is to try and contain 100% of the cylinder pressure and compression . Second ring is there to catch the tiny bit of compression /gasses that might sneak by the top ring gap .Today with piston ring technology and cnc block machining the second ring is literally just along for the ride . Many race engines and some production engines today use pistons with only a top ring and oil control rings ,no second ring at all .

Either set of pistons will take what ever you can throw at them as long as you say out of detonation . Both are 4032 forged aluminum and plenty strong . I don't get why someone would say the China pistons look like ''doodoo'' when they are forged and machined on state of the art cnc machines . The China pistons not having piston pin oiling holes is not a big deal because the N54 uses piston squirters and the pins will get more then enough oil . But if you wanted to add those holes a hour labor at your engine machine shop should be all it takes .

Somebody did mention in this comment section a reason that also makes sense to me. That being motors get hot, rings expand butt up against themselves then in to the cylinder wall. I like to blame bent rods, because that means we are making enough power to bend rods (woohoo arent we cool :|). However this explanation would more so suit my 17t failure. Where it died from the water pump not working. Not even pushing the motor.

@@ZeroTo60Tube sounds like a situation that would happen on my Northstars. Previous owner overheats it, rings expand, wear occurs, and now you have an oil-burning problem that can only be solved with a rebuild It's possible that the oil control rings could also be stuck together (usually happens with carbon buildup, not overheating), and a 2nd gear redline, then engine braking in 2nd gear immediately after redline would help free the oil control rings

With the insane amount of one time use only bolts holding the gerdle, main bearings, main bolts, crank hub, hub friction plates it doesn't take long to add up cost wise. I want to avoid taking the cranks out on the budget style builds. Andrew, my JE pistons have the protective coating like the Russian pistons and they also have a groove between the compression rings the same as the Kingtec Racing pistons. Also, they have 3 holes on each side behind the oil ring. It would pay to measure everything as one of the JE pistons supplied for my engine was different to the others in that the wrist pin hole was slightly lower which meant the piston was higher in the block. The carrillo rods have a large pin end like the Kingtec Racing conrods. Getting all rotating parts balanced is a must if you are planning to rev this engine to 8,000rpm down the track.

The stock pistons don’t have the pin oiling holes so maybe the China version works that way, also have a feeling Jake’s mahle pistons don’t either…… but don’t quote me on that. I have a few built motor specs for ring gaps but need to speak to a few more engine builders to see what the general consensus is going to be.

Don’t like the Chinese king package if I’m honest, ringlsnds crack due to high boost, how good are the pistons metal is super important, you want a high silica mix so they expand quickly from cold, if you don’t your get piston rattle from cold and your get overtime oval wear on the bores

I would imagine the bit between the ring lands on the Chinese pistons is a stress relief point so they don’t crack as easy, the tapered end on the maxpeeding rods is something Subaru guys do to their rods, can’t remember why though, them Russian pistons with the tiny gaps for the oil rings at the bottom looks a little worrying, also what someone else commented about sharp edges on pistons is a big no no as it heats up as won’t flow smoothly over the top!

It is quite complex when you don’t understand it and if you don’t have a good understanding you will waste hours and hours trying fix little things when it stops working. Which it will stop. As for a cable for diagnosis any cheap k&d can cable is fine. For programming and flashing id reccomend something more expensive.

Then people will see your second comment and do the same, which again is incorrect. As you have a semi reasonable understanding you should put a bit more effort in to not making incorrect statements publicly and keep in mind how it causes a lot of confusion for people learning.
