Uhhh Joey, no to the barf green countertops! It is possible to make pre fabricated kitchen cabinets look like a custom design with some Creative Weirdo-ness and of course, help you save on your kitchen budget!
These DIY faux beams are a way for us to get a higher-end look, a higher ceiling all without having to spend money on re-engineering the ceiling.
Sandblasting is an awesome technique to age wood in a matter of minutes! Driftwood chic here we come!

For tiled countertops, I reckon a thin layer of clear resin on top would be worth doing! Only very thin, perhaps even only over the grout. But it will just mean that dirt doesn't seep into the grout and makes the whole thing easier to maintain. Obviously the correct PPE will be needed to make sure you're not gassing yourselves while doing it 😂

I agree with the resin overlay idea. We had tile benchtops and I hated them. So hard to keep clean, grout forever going mouldy, so gross!

the roof isn't that bad! if you painted it like a terracotta enamel it would look like spanish clay roof tiles.

I feel like I'm the only one who loves the roof and its colour 😂 It's so unique and I'm so used to it now, it's like the soul of the house for me 😂 But obviously it's your house and if you don't like it, then I hope you'll be able to change it then. Honestly this makes me feel so much better about the fact that my guy doesn’t always “get” my vision right away and has to see the final product. And that he’s not jumping up and down with enthusiasm and confetti when I show him my latest DIY project. 😂🎉 But he always loves the finished look and compliments me on my talent!

With Joey on the tile counter-tops. I have never seen one that no matter how hard you scrub, turns nasty. It is grout after all. :)

Oh and not all epoxy is food safe. Even if you do seal it, it will probably need to be re-done periodically.

Yeah like Im OPEN to seeing how it turns out, and maybe bc its just the guest house it will be fine since its not used as much. but it just seems like a PAIN, and a lot of the time they look very DATED.

I'd keep the roof since it's in good condition. Yeah it wouldn't be something I'd choose if I was picking a roof, but you can totally make it work! :) You've made worse things look awesome

Did I hear you right that you're going to do tile for the kitchen COUNTERTOP? I've never commented something like this but DON'T DO IT.😭 Grout is so disgusting and just harbors bacteria - you don't want to prep food on tile countertops, Kate 😬

So happy you're back! One suggestion I would make is regarding situating your projects in a broader context. Since there are different buildings and projects, it's kind of confusing to figure out where you are, what was there before, and what it's becoming. Also, the episodes are so great I wish they were longer (25 minutes?). Adding a bit more context would help. Love you guys!!

@@ronifurr I somewhat see your point but also not really. Like terms like stewardess, waitress, maid, etc are all very gendered for women and jobs/roles that are/were heavily considered to be jobs almost exclusively for women when thats not the case, men often do all those jobs too, so for those I get changing terms to more neutral, like flight attendant, house keeper, etc. But nanny and babysitter are neutral terms, the association with people assuming a nanny/babysitter is a woman isnt becuase of the TERM that is being used, its because the VAST majority of the people who are nannys/sitters just ARE women. Its not a mysogynistic assumption or based off a female gendered job title, its just becuase thats that demographic of the job. and in this case "people assume it's women unfortunately"......but she IS. So for someone to assume that their sitter/nanny/family helper, is a women would in fact be very CORRECT. Then with "playmate" Im 50/50 on it, but part of that feels a LITTLE like just rich people being uncomfortable having to acknowledge their wealth/privllege, they dont like the "look" of having a "nanny" or "maid", so they will call it something else, but at the end of the day whatever you call those roles you still HAVE them, its still the same job.

Absolutely here for the different countertops on the island vs back kitchen counter/backsplash. We just did it and let’s our beautiful green island stone shine! Although don’t do tile. We did a coloured stone for our main island, then just did a simple white caesar stone for the kitchen counter + backsplash, and it’s so much more practical for cooking and cleaning!

I have never liked things I consider 'high-maintenance' for frequently dirtied surfaces like counter-tops (tiles, concrete, marble, etc) BUT they do make much more sense in a guest house since the kitchen is going to be used much less often.

Kudos to you both...working around the limitations of Hawaii's "stock" of anything is difficult. my grandmother was a couture seamstress from Los Angeles. my mother and I would get the most awesome clothes/fabrics from her. but when she and my grandfather retired to Hawaii, the cool clothes were no more. there were just no good fabrics available anymore. old stock, past fashions, limited....limited....limited. a few hawaiian prints, but we couldn't wear those all the time on the mainland. my grandmother's artistic passion just sort of evaporated after that. inspiration was hard to come by...no internet shopping/shipping in those days. wishing you the best

Outdoor showers are the best! There’s also the option of semi-outdoor where the ceiling or one wall is open and exposed, but the rest is connected to the main bathroom.
