Thanks....yes I like to make smaller quantities....this did me for two days. Hope you enjoy it.
@renel73035 ай бұрын
Karronjoy, it's good that you are figuring out how to cook for just you. There are lots of resources for cooking for one or two. Lots online, lots of books available used. Except for parties I've only ever cooked for one or two. If you have freezer space you can go ahead and make recipes that serve 4-6. Have a serving now, put one aside and freeze the rest portioned out. Very convenient. I do that with soups, stews and chili. Meatloaf can be made in muffin tins, serve 1 or 2 depending on size. Freeze veg can be a problem, it's easy to over buy and have waste. I tend to buy broccoli frozen at Aldi and just use what I need. Other frozen veg too. I keep my bread in the freezer. Because I have special dietary needs now, low sodium and gluten free, I tend to cook most meals just for me and my partner gets his own meals. He eats a lot of take out. One thing I love is my 7 inch electric skillet. I do a lot of stir fry in it. I use rice noodles which just soak in hot water from my kettle and when I want rice I use the electric pressure cooker. It takes a little creativity to figure out quantities but quite doable. Best of luck to you from California. I'd do the toad in the hole today but it's going to be 104F/40C today. Yogurt and fruit for lunch, salad for dinner.

@renel73035 ай бұрын
The batter needs to be smooth, either room temperature or cold and the oven and pan needs to be hot as hades. When you take the pan out get the oven door closed quickly to retain the heat. Quickly pour the batter in, get it back in the oven and no opening to peak. I've always made them individually, in a 5-6" cast iron frying pan with good results. Here in the US if you leave out the sausage and gravy, ideally use butter instead of lard in the pan we call them a Dutch Baby. Already buttered, top with some jam and a dusting of powdered sugar and serve as breakfast or snack.😊

😊 at least one of us points this out for each recipe. Eggs are 26 cents each, etc. Usually some of us calculate our cost usd and convert to gbp. Then we compare where we are in the US. I'm in California. I usually win the "most expensive version category" 😂 Plus I have to switch to gluten-free versions of flours for even more $$$. It's a hobby.

@@BakingOnABudgetbeing in the US our sausages are often a bit different than what you have available. I'm considering using 0:00 cheddar brats as they are to hand. I'd give a very quick light browning as they are already cooked. Next choice would be chicken apple with sage. Those come raw. Regardless yum. Thankfully I've already found a decent gluten-free Yorkshire pudding recipe.

I’ve always used the water the veg were cooked in to make gravy, why dident you do that ?, makes it tastes soo much nicer , not criticism but just wondering

Thanks....I'd never thought of that....but a great suggestion. Thanks a lot.

I've never seen that done. I'm thinking broccoli water would have an unpleasant strong taste. I tend to steam in the microwave so very little water usually. But I have saved cooking water into the freezer to use for soup.

@renel7303 cabbage water is the best, but any water from steamed vegetables works, especially mixed with the meat juices in the roasting tin 😋😋

I wish the USA sold gravy mix like that! We pay 2-3 times that much because it only comes in small packets.
@renel73035 ай бұрын
Wrong! I just looked it up. McCormick, who makes the gravy packets you see almost everywhere also sells it in a jar, makes 9 cups total. Not too pricey. Sold at Wal-Mart no less. There are some other brands available. I'm sure food service places like Smart & Final have bulk variations. Search for "gravy granules ", "bulk gravy mix" and "bulk gravy mix recipe ". Lots available if you are a DIY type.

Yes it's fairly inexpensive in the UK....I plan a video n which I will make the gravy from scratch. Thanks.

Wonderful! Where I live all of the grocery stores are pretty small: if I cannot find it locally then I will order it on-line from Wal-mart

We get big 2L ones the restaurants use. Lasts forever. Aussie here. I go to wholesale places. Look up maggi 2L Demi glacé powder. They have plenty of other styles & flavours too.

It's lovely cold with jam (jelly) on too.

Simple to make and delicious with the gravy on. Hope you give it a try.

It's basically the same batter as popovers or Dutch Baby, aka oven pancake. Really easy to make. The pan and oven need to be hot and no opening the door to peek. 😊 I'm in the US. First time I made it as a teenager my dad cried. Only time I ever saw him cry. His mother was from England. He said it tasted exactly like what his mom made when he was a child.

Can't beat toad in the hole Dave. Only thing I do differently is I never brown off the sausages first the amount of time they cook in the oven I think that's long enough and they are always well cooked, but hey that's just me. Keep it up mate cheers

I do this meal at least once a fortnight don't do the butter carrots but I use a 3-tier steamer to save on gas/elec and I use the water from the spuds/veg for the gravy, so you don't have to boil the kettle for the gravy, like you I use bisto gg. so get your self a steamer!

Thanks a lot.....yes a few people have mentioned using the water from the veg to make the gravy......It had never occured to me but I'll give it a go. Thanks.
