Watching Peter is so cool how he get those candid shots and seeing Venessa be resourceful but using bounce and there two different styles helps us as photographers to be better . It’s all about capturing the subject and lighting and making them comfortable I’m learning a lot watching these videos.

Great video. Peter's view on "direction through misdirection" makes a difference. What he says doesn't really matter. What does matter is how the subject reacts to the misdirection. I'm a huge fan of the shot you get after the subject has stopped laughing in that the eyes are sparkling, the expression is genuine and the subject is behaving as a happy human rather than a subject. Thanks for making the video and sharing it.

I love these shootouts. This time, it goes to Peter. He really knows how to get the models engaged. I have his headshot book, and while I like squinching, I don't really like cutting off the top of the head. In my mind, I always think "where's the rest of it". You can't bring it back if you don't like it! You can always crop in post a bit if you think it might work.

Of the two finals, I like Peter’s slightly better-that said, there were some of Vanessa’s shots I would have chosen over her final one, so I think it’s a tie, all things considered! Peter got a ton of natural and joyful expressions-I mean, it’s Peter Hurley 😃 I’m a fan, so I might be biased. Chopping off the head is effective, it works to emphasize the face, definitely impactful.

What a shame, f1.4 lens and a plain background, I'd like to have seen what it can really do with environmental backgrounds, nice job on the sign acquisition, though! While I love both, I’’ll vote for Peter’s photograph. Vanessa’s for me had a distraction in the lower right, the see through sleeve kept drawing my attention, enough so that I found Peter’s less distracting because of the sleeve. Weird because I feel bad for allowing a small detail to be what created the distinction, but the as I work on my own photography I’ve learned that it is some little detail that defines the photograph. I really love this series and this definitely was one of the best in this series, love it.

But if you had been able to move Peter's up a touch on the paper if would have fit both fine.... providing you had that ability. There was a lot more border on the top than the bottom, so you would THINK that there was... but they both looked great! That one was fun!

For model and actor headshots, I don't mind a little cut off the top of head. For business/corporate headshots, NO WAY. I think these are both equal but different. Peter is so much fun to watch and has a great way of teaching. I think his shot is a little better, her smile looks better I think. With cropping the top of the head I think it depends on the person. Hi Vanessa - I enjoy watching your videos. Would you consider doing an "afterwards" where you comment on what you think your guests approaches/methods were (as you saw them)? Peter seemed to totally to focus on interacting with model and the camera work seemed almost incidental (did he change any settings on the camera?). The other thing, was when you printed at the end and you showed the range of Canon papers - when would you use glossy or matt? What does "consumer friendly" mean (in this setting)? If Canon are helping with this, could you show how different papers might make things look? Which you you choose? Sorry, I ran on an bit 🙂
@VanessaJoy2 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely a fun angle to take! Consumer friendly is a more easy to use and less expensive camera in my opinion. And they use glossy or matte depending on my mood. :-)

Well- two of my fave shooters, but: Vanessa for the win. Why: Peter's style is dependent upon "molding" the face with multiple light sources- that's his signature. Vanessa going to a vertical format, made the image more compelling to me. IMHO: Peter's looks like a passport photo.

In real life, I think it’s up to the client or the purpose of the shoot when it comes to which one would be better. On the basis of composition and expression I do like Peter’s better, but again it’s subjective. Well done to both of you. And as for the mini-crop, it’s a no for me. Go bigger or go home! Otherwise it looks like an accident or a half-step
@AdrianBacon2 жыл бұрын
re headshots: don't cut off the top of the head. If you're going for a more stylistic artsy type of headshot that can be fine (that's more into portrait territory though), but the point of headshots is to be used to identify a person. Don't cut off the top of the head.
@UnconventionalReasoning2 жыл бұрын
"They say it's not the camera but the photographer that makes a great image." In general, they would be wrong. The subject is an important aspect, and the cameras are so spectacular that even the "inexpensive" gear is amazing. Perhaps a real challenge would be to use a 15-20 year old $100 (at the time) point & shoot, like an early Canon Elph?
@VanessaJoy2 жыл бұрын
look at the rest of the videos in this series... we do exactly that
@UnconventionalReasoning2 жыл бұрын
@@VanessaJoy most simply I would replace "It's not the camera but the photographer that makes a great image," with "It's the subject (including lighting), equipment (camera *and* lens), photographer, and post-processing that makes a great image." For best and most consistent results, have the quality of each at about the same level. I think we really need to get past the idea of "photographer's individualism", especially to make the images a co-creation with the subject rather than "I'm the photographer, I'm the boss!" mentality. The easiest example is your two best images from the session with PhotoMeIke are all because of Julianna, "But the expression!" and "Marvel Studios extra!"
