Speaking of a personal SHTF, I went to work one day and fell and broke my ankle in 2 places. Surgery 5 days later and doctor says it will be close to a year before I can return to work. Preps have had to go on a back burner for a while until I can walk again. Things happen beyond our control so if you are prepared, you are ahead of the game.

Then longer term like uncooked rice beans flour and sprputable grains which will five you fresh plants in a few days with enough vitamins to survive. People who are in Venezuela had no cooking fuel and wished they had Canned cooked beans to survive on. Water Food Fire Gun

I keep a get home bag in my truck. It’s over stuffed with “too much” stuff. I also keep items like an IFAC, shovel, axe, rope, etc. plan is to discard items I would not need and add items I would need depending on the situation, how far I’m going, availability of water, and threats. If we are going a further distance, we will add my wife’s get home bag as well. Would have enough supplies, food, and water for a couple weeks (more of less) of inconvenienced camping if needed. Also have items to boil, filter, chemically treat water and fish, trap, hunt, and forage edible vegetation. I do need to get more knowledgeable so we can identify and eat more than blackberries and dandelions lol

I’m looking at what I have left to do and 100gal water barrels, an additional 3 months of food, and setting up solar and battery backups are all such massive expenses. I’ve just started a garden for now and might get a rain collection system and call it there for now.

Great insight, For $1000 budget, You’re definitely gonna have to get creative. Once your food, water & medicine needs are met, you can always get gear from the military surplus store that is used & cheap. A lot of their items are tried and true. Then i’d get a Mossberg Maverick 88 shotgun. You can still get some 12 gauge shotgun shells both defensive and target for relatively cheap at Walmart. If you choose to go getting a pistol versus a shotgun for your only means of protection, then, believe it or not, a lot of gun stores have decent used pistols for sale. A lot of people sold back to the stores, their guns that they purchased during the pandemic (because of inflation, etc.).

For this challenge I'll change dollars to PLN for obvious reasons of living in Poland: 1) Ferro rod - cheap, reliable and durable source of fire starting 2) If I'm planning to buy bottled water, then water for 100-150 PLN, Lifestraw here costs around this margin of 100-150 3) Food for 300 PLN, some would be dry goods, some canned 4) Gram of medical PREVENTION would be more important than kilogram of medical intervention, however iodine and charcoal would do fine in both cases (medical and hygiene for at most 100 PLN) 5) 20l of gasoline in a jerry can for around 130-140 PLN 6) 12V/230V converter to charge crucial devices from the car itself costs 100-200 PLN - a massive saving in comparison to full-size not pathetic quality power generator costing at least 700 PLN Whatever is left goes to toilet paper and maybe flashlight with corresponding batteries. I don't mention stuff like backpack, clothing and others due to having them. PS Or simply because something may be too expensive for such a budget (such as firearms and ammo).

Always an interesting though experiment to consider what you would do if you found out you were going to have to shelter in place without power in your home for as long as possible and had one chance to shop with the cash you have in your home. If there are things you would NEED to get, then those are places that you need to prep. If you could not need to go, the things you would get are likely places where you could prep deeper. If you would just "insulate" your preps with a deeper pile of beans and bullets - then you are likely in a good place already - since you are just maximizing duration at that point. I know for my case, the things I would get would be things that I would only use in a apoc (and so don't get rotated will pre-apoc) - like powdered milk and canned meats. I have some of those, but it is a chore to rotate through them, since I prefer fresh and, like SP said, topping off on gas and things like that. Also, as I consider it today, there is a gap in clothing between my kids today and when they are grown. When I get them new shoes I usually grab the pair that fits and the next 2-3 sizes up as well so that they can just wear them out as them move up, but I would likely grab an extra pair or two of boots for myself and shoes up to adult sizes for the kids. Most everything else, they could just live in oversized clothes. So, a dozen or more pairs of shoes would certainly take a part of my $1K.

The UN standard rehydration mix, recipe only, needs 4 common cheap ingredients. It is given to dysentery and dehydration patients. Works jusr as well as all the fancy brand name electrolytes, but $5 worth will last a family of four for a month. Adding flavoring makes it palateable.

@@DrSchori think they should be considered professional preppers. They are not making a living by selling prep, but they survive daily off grid, and have known such for hundreds of years; thus professional grade survivalists.

Since you mentioned the Going Home series and also the futility of trying to prepare for an EMP, that reminded me of another book, 'Decline and Decay' by A. American and Alan Kay. If you think you're ready, read that book. You're NOT ready.

If I had $1,000 to play with just to buy the last minute things, cuz that was all I was going to be able to have besides what I already have.... I would buy a few more bags of flour and I would buy more canned meat. The flour that I buy at the store, I would make ships biscuits or tac with. They are super dry and concrete hard and have a super long expiration date. I would also buy canned meat like spam or canned ham for example. I would also buy some medicines like advil, Ibuprofen and Tylenol add Imodium AD period about I would focus on those items.... What's your poop is the fan homeowners insurance is the last thing that I'm going to concern myself with them this is due to if this is concerning a war situation or an Insurgent or what have you that its internal. At that point I would have my vehicle prepped with all that's needed in case of any emergency that was so severe you only had minutes to move and get out
