In his book "the man in the white suit" Ben Collins, AKA The Stig reveals that one of the most important jobs on Top Gear was to make sure that all the cars for the Cheap Car challenges were running but that if there were any flaws or defects, the instructions were to leave them, no mending because knowing that a car was going to fail just added to the fun of it. He also mentions that that Maserati was probably the worst car ever to pass his very able hands.

BMW's were designed to be driven everyday. Lambo's were not. The video proves that. I had a 91' 5 series I daily drove with a zillion miles on it. I took it all over Europe. Never a failure. If you honestly think you can do that with a Lambo then you are either a Lambo fanboy or you are delusional. Lambo's are beautiful cars, pieces of art but they aren't reliable that's a fact.

Yep, I mean you don't seriously expect if the fella who sold the Merak sold the whole car for 7 and spent 10 rebuilding the engine that musta been dross. Plus as others have said why the heck would you take a 70's car for a low price probably not in the best of shape, thrash it round a race track and not expect it to break? These cars had problems of course and the threesome obviously knew they were buying turds that they couldn't possibly expect to be reliable. However for 10 grand I wouldn't complain I'd love one just to fart about with and restore, though getting some of the parts could be difficult and alot of times it's what you can't see I bet the bodies of all 3 on the underside were completely rotten Richard even admits it on his so there you go, as another guy said don't be angry at TG for ruining these 3 beautiful cars be angry at the previous owners for letting them get this bad in the first place. Buying these cars isn't terrible as long as you know what your doing and inspect each thoroughly before buying you should be able to find a well kept example that might just need some extra work. One of the best episodes of the old series in my opinion.

So ever since watching this challenge on the Top Gear Challenges DVD I've been trying to find a mid-engined, Italian supercar for about the same price the boys spent. And I've NEVER found one! The closest I've gotten is a Ferrari Mondial for $44k! How did they do it?! Same with the £100 Car Challenge, how one Earth did they manage to find actual, full sized, engined cars for less than an Xbox Kinect!
