I’ve had the 6ft Bakflip for 8 months and it experienced all weather conditions in mountains and high desert including extreme rain and heat. No issues whatsoever. The little corner between tailgate and the bed has a space by the truck’s design and some water can seep in there in heavy rain. The solution is to get a rubber bed mat or storage system to keep your stuff off the bed floor. Given that I live in a city I’m glad I ponied up for the Bakflip for the security and peace of mind. It also serves as a great table when you are outside. 10/10 would recommend. Great review as usual!

I live in Canada and had the bakflip on my truck. Had the arms break within the first year and it leaked no matter what I did. In the winter it would freeze shut and was difficult to flip. It would even freeze to the top of the tail gate and I would have to slip something between the top of the tail gate and the trim on the cover to free it up. As for thief deterrent, it just slows down a thief. Can be easily pride open. So in my opinion, the expensive looks nicer but overall it’s not worth the cost.

One thing I did with the hardcover was that I mounted a bike rack that that held 4 racing bikes on top of it so that we could use the Tacoma as a team vehicle for long stage races. It allowed us to still store other team gear in the bed underneath.

I have been a user of soft trifold tonneau covers for 7 years. They are a great choice for my use case. Very light and easy to take off and no drain hose to keep clean and open.

I put the Revolver X4S on my Tacoma and love it. The rolling design works better for me, since it doesn't block visibility when I need the bed open. One important thing with any tonneau cover - put some protection on it, like 303 or similar.

We went through Hurricane Ian and the Ram 1500 I had at the time had a BAKFlip MX4 cover on it, the cover survived Hurricane Ian with zero damage and we had winds for hours of 140 plus MPH, so I can say that BAKFlip MX4 covers are hurricane tough. Hurricane Ian was a very slow moving hurricane and stayed off of the coast for hours hammering us with 140 plus MPH winds. The winds were so hard that you could watch the Ram 1500 rocking and bounding back and forth.

Great video and very thorough and thoughtful. I went with the cheaper cover because I didn’t know what I wanted. I needed to protect my golf clubs, travel bags, and whatever else I carrying. So far the cover has done its job and have no complaints.

Truck bed covers for me is all about protecting my valuables since I always have things inside it. I went with Diamondback. The only way someone is breaking into that is if someone was to carry an angle grinder and cut their way into it.

Hey Chloe, i have a 2017 Taco TRD offroad. love your videos. What I have learned is you get what you pay for. personally I will not get a cover because I use my bed to haul branches, dirt, firewood, gravel, ect.. also when I camp I sleep on the ground and I pack my bags in a waterproof way. no tent either, just a blue tarp. This how we do oldschool.

Great video as always. I know lots of truck owners like the tri-fold cover, but I decided to go with the roll-up cover. That way I have full access to my bed. In addition, I stayed away from the shiny vinyl because of my opinion "looks cheap". Instead, I went with a fabric cover (has vinyl underneath to keep water out). The fabric seems to give an upscale appearance too. Also, I notice it hides the dirt too. My neighbor has a vinyl cover and I have the fabric. We had neighbors give their vote which they like better. The fabric beat out the other slightly, because votes changed when the voters learned the price difference ($220 for vinyl vs. $450 for fabric). I believe your cover looks great on your truck. Don't forget some tri-folds can act as a tabletop when camping.

I have the Truxedo Lo Pro roll up on my 2nd Gen. I have researched multiple types. It's practically flush with the top of the bed rail. I haven't had any problems like sagging, water leaks etc. I knew I didn't want a hardtop and wanted access to the entire bed space with ease of install and operation. I've had this since 2011 and looks like new still, only had to replace rear tailgate seal (free replacement) due to my negligence. I just use it to keep things out of the elements and don't rely on its security. I very pleased with it!

I went with the soft trifold when I ordered my truck. It is more for keeping snow out in the winter. The added benefit of keeping things dry in the occasional rain drive. I will be carrying my motorcycles in the bed a lot , I ordered the long bed Tacoma TRD sport premium.

I have the cheaper option on my new-to-me 2018 and my biggest complaint is the clamp handles @4:14 sometimes flop down while folding the cover back to the clips. You have to go around to the other side of the truck and move the handle flat. Love the channel btw - except that I already had to spend money on the Anytime Camera mod and the backup lights are next!

Back in '18 i got a cheap soft cover for my 18 taco, was only $219(same price today) MaxMate 6ft trifold. Not had a single issue with it yet, material is still holding strong. Taking it off for large loads is quick n easy with just 2 hand screw clamp things. They do help a little bit with mileage when doing a lot of highway driving, so its always on for road trips. Plus just having that 'out of sight' security when leaving things in the bed, though i wouldnt trust it with really expensive things like wifes camera equip... that stays in the cab. Wanted a full cap for the bed, but wife was all grr grr about it... so yeah wife wins...

I have had bed covers since 1980. The first was one piece vinyl from an upholstery shop, the second was a commercial (Cover Craft vinyl), the third was a one piece from Undercover, the last is a hard, folding cover from Extang. Each had advantages and disadvantages. The thread in the vinyl covers will sun rot and fail in four or five years in Arizona, the one piece is weather tight and durable, but limits what can be carried in the truck bed, without removing it and leaving it at home. The folding hard covers are more versatile than the one piece, but the seams leak...so not completely weather tight. Each is a compromise.

A good contender to these is a hard roll up cover like a BAK revolver. You get nearly full access to the be with it rolled up without losing the visibility like the Bakflip, more protection than the soft tri fold too

I bought a 2014 TRD Offroad with a Truck Covers USA American roll cover already installed and love it. It can support 500 lbs evenly distributed and conceals valuable items while leaving you with a sense of ease. They are very pricey however......

I have a tuxedo truxport - $329 at Real Truck. Roll up that gives you 100% use of your bed (without covering your rear window). I have had more expensive tri-folds before but who wants to pay big bucks for 2/3 use of your truck bed. Mine still looks brand new after 1.5 years

Ive owned 4 Tacomas (Gen 1 -3) with all styles of covers including a budget cover, bakflip cover and camper shell. My favorite option is is the Leer shell for obvious reasons but when I take it off I use the budget cover which is second I best. I purchased for it less than $200 and I am able to flip it when needed and its super easy to remove and install when I need it. The bakflip was a pita and because its so flush to give the "better look" becomes almost unusable when throwing simple things in the bed like oversized luggage. The bakflip also leaked on me at times and in the cold months in New England the draining system would give me issues. Just my 2 cents.

Having a 23 Taco Lease (doub'ed "The Dark Taco"), I went ahead and bought the "Backflip" from Zeibart. It does a great job, but you have to open the tailgate to lock it back down though.. Now four months later, I wish I'd of went ahead and got a cap for it, like a ARE.. Because, I'll most likely keep the Dark Taco as I camp and do Bigfoot research and the extra cubic ft of storage sometimes needed would of been best.. But ehh, trial-n-error...

I have the Backflip, but under a different brand name. I love it, except when temps are subzero. The latches freeze in place on me, so I can't flip the cover up or even close my tailgate, since you have to slightly lift the cover before shutting it. My solution has been to keep a propane torch in the truck. I hit the metal part of the latch for a second or two, to release it! Because of this, my hardware is a bit rusty. I have tried various dry lubes, but so far they haven't worked.

This is a good and useful video. I, too, have somewhat similar experiences. My first new truck was a 1995 Chevy W/T, which I drove for 26 years. It had an inexpensive Access roll-up tonneau cover installed at Toys for Trucks. Inexpensive truck; inexpensive bed cover. But that cover was still on my truck when I sold it last year. It was still tight, it was still wind and rain proof, and it had not been faded by the sun. It did have some small holes in it from a landscaping company payloader -- I lent the truck to a friend. Alas... Based on my first experiences with a truck bed cover I learned that (1) I wanted a tonneau cover on my new truck and (2) I preferred a roll-up cover, which gives me full access to the truck bed, and (3) I was willing to pay more for a better bed cover. Better truck; better bed cover. On my new 2022 Tacoma Sport, I installed a considerably more expensive Truxedo roll-up tonneau cover and it is a real improvement over my first tonneau cover. It is made of higher quality, tougher materials, it is wind and water tight, it is more secure AND easier to unlock, and it has a lower profile that matches better with the bed of the truck. My son and I installed it quickly and easily. I am very happy with the upgraded tonneau cover and, like you, I believe extra money well spent can get you good value. I spent $189 for a TruXedo Roll-up cover and it came with the foam sealers, it's waterproof and durable. Granted, it doesn't offer the security hardcover, I just personally don't like hard covers because they are too inflexible based on what my needs are. I also don't like driving w/o being able to see out my rearview mirror, hence my choice to buy a rolltop cover. Like any cover, you must keep it clean and protected. It looks great, especially on my black truck 2021 TRD Offroad.

I've had these soft tonneau covers for my 2nd gen. They're great and cheap until you go into an area like City Heights (the hood) for extended periods of time. Guaranteed to be slashed by someone to see if you have anything in the bed. Hard covers are worth it just for the initial security value. .

Thanks for your video Chloe! I actually have the Backflip MX4 -the same one you have on your white Tacoma- and I absolutely love it! I have to frequently carry expensive scuba equipment in my truck (the reason I have a pickup), and the security and easy of use is second to none. The ability to fully open the cover is very important to me. Even the OEM tonneau cover does not fully open. You have to remove it if you want the easy whole bed access at a drip of a hat. Also, I have a Black LTD Tacoma, so that MX4 cover just looks made for my truck, premium looks!

I have the factory cover. It leaks a lot under the cover since the bed caps aren’t flat and it doesn’t squeeze it’s weather stripping enough. My bed also leaks a ton behind the bed rails even after weather stripping that seam. The rubber pieces in the front of the bed still leave a half inch gap. Basically since the cover is flat water runs off and in that. Leaks all in the passenger cubby and the outlet. Learning why people opt for the 4Runner. I’ve done a ton of work though spent very little and it’s finally not too bad to the point the bed may would likely solve my problems mostly

At 5:15, you mention those foam stickers that attach to the header ends. where did you get them? I need these for a different cover where that area takes in a ton of water. Ive tried sealing it, but nothing really works and its a tough area to properly RTV. Want to give your solution a shot.

Another issue with the soft top can be weather conditions though it may not apply in that particular model. I had one on a different truck where it snapped to the frame (and wasn't foldable). To get in you had to unsnap it. In cold weather the material would shrink enough to make snapping it closed very difficult. Just additional to consider though that may not be applicable in that model.

If you want some security then a hard cover is your only choice, the folding covers will give you that security, roll up soft covers and not secure at all so it all depends on if you want some security or not.

for me the best so far the truckcover usa rollup its like a garage door ok your bed. ive have the soft then trade it for the trifold and. w both of them hate it to lose visibility and having to take off when had 2 use the hole bed. now i feel have the best of both worlds it is expensive but worth the money

I have the cheap one and I guess the nice thing about it is that if it does get damaged i can get another for as little as $200. Those cheap ones come under a dozen different brands as well I've noticed.

There are hard tonneau covers on ebay for between 300.00 and 400.00. I'm not saying they are as good as bakflip but from the youtube videos they look pretty good. I have a 2023 Tacoma off rd and looking for one that mounts using the rails on sides of bed. I prefer the aluminum as opposed to composite although you can stand on both. Like your videos.

I have had the MX backflip since the first week I got my 2020 TRD Pro from the dealer. The quality is not worth the premium price tag. Straight from the box there was aluminum shaving all over the place from the drilling. Withing a year all the hardware was rusted. This is Washington state where we don't have rust issues. The thumb screws to keep the arms secure always come undone and are rattling around in my truck bed. The little plastic clips that keep the arms stationary fell of. There's tons of dings in the tob from any time I moderately place a tub on top while packing. The rubber is still holding up but I'm not sure for how long. It does keep the truckbed secure while in the city but I really think it needs to be more durable or cost half as much. I would not recommend at this price at all. If I could do it over again I'd spend extra on a canopy.

I love my bakflip mx4 I got it around January. It does let a little water in tho when it rains not gonna lie but not too bad. I keep things that I don’t want wet in totes. Plus when I got it, I only paid $900 on Amazon.

That soft tonneau cover is $200 on amazon under different brand names. I bought one in 2018 and its still holding strong. A bolt came loose on one of the hinges once and I just tightened it to fix it. If it ever rips or gets destroyed I will get the same one again. No point in getting a hard cover that does not give a little when you are trying to fit something bigger in the bed.

My bro in law has the hard tri fold. Its only been 2 years and it already started curving (warped?) and not straight anymore and not completely flushed, leaving little gaps. I have the roll up cover and for being only $299 (it was on sale) its enough. I only got it only for winter time so snow wont build up on my trucks bed. Otherwise i feel like hard covers are for only if u have items needing to store and kept locked.

Great comparison, and the value justification is an important part. I've had 2 separate soft vinyl covers, and now have the BAKflip. The first of the 2 soft covers was too generic. The bar near the back was too far to the rear, and the clips hung out of the rear of the side rails. Woke up one morning after a storm (high winds) to find my cover had been opened and badly bent by the wind. The second was a freebie that my brother took off his leased Tacoma before trading in. This one fit much better. I only replaced it as it was starting to wear. So the vinyl ones can be good value, but do a bit more research than I did about fitment to ensure you don't have the issue I had with my first one. That's when I went to the BAKflip. I wanted the flush appearance and the added security of a hard folding cover. The ability to claim nearly all the bed space was a plus.

The finish on the Bakflip isn't very durable either. At least not against some chemicals that normal automotive paint would shrug off. I made the mistake of laying a rag with some diesel fuel on it on mine and it softened the paint and smoothed out the texture. The paint didn't come off but left a noticeable permanent blemish. Live and learn, I guess.

I have the backflip cover and one day I found out that the weather stripping on the passenger side has vanished. I'm not sure if someone ripped it off or it came off on its own which I doubt cause the glue they used is pretty powerful.

I had a Bak flip on my F-150 GSA truck and F-350 personal truck. They are really nice but a bit too expensive. I recently had a soft cover on my Nissan Titan XD. It was ok but provided limited security for stuff inside the bed. I will never buy another expensive tonneau cover.

i have a lockable retrax on mine and it’s even better than that because you can mount a yakima rack. so keep most of the bed and it locks away my things out of sight and i can still put my canoe , surfboards, ladders etc etc etc on top and the rac moves up and down out of the wind if you want to I don’t see a better system for what i use mine for.

I've got the Retrax with rails too and love it! Being able to keep my Yakima towers and just picking up new Landing Pads (LP 1) I figure off set the added cost of the Retrax. All I needed them for was my roof top bike mounts. Since I've got a short bed Taco, I love when I need to haul stuff like sheet goods it comes out with 4 just the four bolts into the side rails.

I got the bakflip mx4 also but for a 6 ft bed. But I didn’t pay near $1,100 for it. 😎 I love it. I got it due to the Matte finish, flush mount, and can’t get it I. By just cutting the leather / vinyl. Plus it’s super durable and has a really good 5 year warranty.

chloe, the mx4 is not at all durable. had to replace the 1 the truck came with cause it had holes in it. so just saying unless they are a sponsor

If you live in a low crime area in would go with the cheap one. If you live in the USA then hard one, with locks. I had an ARE, that i got it for half the price cause it was used and different color. It was good but heavy and you couldn't remove it without being a pain. It was secured with a lock so that was good. Then i got a undercover classic, i can take it off and i can lock it too. It was more expensive but i felt it was worth it. With either of my tonneaus never had anything stolen, specially since i lived in the ghetto/barrio for a while. Had my window broken in downtown L.A. but nothing stolen out the back. At that a win....i guess.

I bought a cheap tonneau and when driving down the road at 45 it flew off and almost hit the car behind me. Worth it to spend a little more. However I hate the way they all attach. Every once in a while I find myself searching for a way to secure my more expensive tonneau cover better.
