I actually knew someone that was fired for stealing toilet paper! I agree about tipping, if you can't afford the tip, you probably shouldn't be eating out. Spam can be really good (in moderation because it's not the healthiest thing in the world)! Do you like sushi? If you do, I would bet that you'd like spam masubi. It's really good! I think the biggest one for me that a lot of people fall into is putting off fixing things in order to save money and then the problem turns into a bigger expense down the line. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and pay for something so it doesn't end up costing you twice or three times as much down the line.
@rochellethundercloud3466 жыл бұрын
thereaderbug,totally agree with you. Also, if it's beyond your ability to fix,get a reputable repair person who is bonded and licensed to do whatever needs to be done.pay half up front, half once done. Another thing is taking care of what we have.

Just found you through this collab - very interesting! Although we live on a budget we are definitely not in super tight situation or debt other than our house, one thing I won't do to save money is stop having dinner guests. I would rather eat frugally several other days of the week and be able to have company over than to just avoid it because of the added expense. My husband is very social and hosting is something we really look forward to, so I would always make an effort to include that in my budget!
@BudgetGirl9 жыл бұрын
Maggie Ely Welcome! I totally agree to having guests over regularly - I do a dinner party about once a month at my place. It's easy enough to do a taco bar or a big pot of soup or spaghetti, reasonably cheap meals and appetizers and it always costs me less than going out to dinner and a movie would. Plus it's more intimate and fun!

I agree. I would NEVER give up my cat because I can't afford him anymore. At this point he provides so much comfort I don't think I CAN afford to be without him. That little guy almost single-handedly keeps me off anti-depressants! I have accepted food from a food bank before but, frankly, I probably really needed the help. I also donate to local food banks whenever possible. I won't reuse tea bags. It's probably fine but I just worry about them getting all moldy so on top of drinking weaker tea, I'm drinking moldy weak tea. Not worth the savings in my opinion. I wouldn't buy used underwear. The majority of my wardrobe is thrift store/yard sale finds buuuuut the underwear grosses me out. If I ever can't afford underwear, I will go commando. But hopefully it will never come to that!

[Not directed at you, just venting] The whole pet thing...I don't understand why people even get animals when they can't afford them! If you could but then hit hard times, do the best you can and pray that you can keep them. Homeless people with animals?? No, I'm sorry, I don't understand it. Animals come with expenses...food, vet, emergencies, etc...they can be very expensive! Our shelter runs specials on free dogs and $10 dogs all the time...if you can't afford to adopt a dog for $65, you can't afford to house a dog!! Ok, rant over, sorry.lol Great video! Don't knock the family cloth until you try it! I made them from flannel bought from the fabric store. I do agree about tipping and pets my cat, chickens, and turtle are here to stay!!!
@BudgetGirl9 жыл бұрын
OakTreeVibrations Thank you for your perspective OakTree! I can see how it would be an option with a house full of people where laundry is done every day, but just for me? Not financially sound. Just washing family cloth alone, even if I did it all in one load, once a month (I use a laundromat), would cost me more in laundry fees than I spend on TP. For me, its not worth it and I really doubt it would ever be between cost and personal preference. Thanks so much for commenting and I wish I had chickens and a turtle!

I live in a drought area so "if it's yellow let it be mellow" is the rule in my house. Water is expensive and a resource that should be conserved. I clean on a regular basis and if company is coming I flush. I also use family cloth use for #1 as well as reusable menstrual products. I know many will say ewww, but they have definitely saved me a ton of money and I'm healthier for not having all the chemicals in those products next to (or in) my body. I totally agree with you on the pets and anything illegal or unethical. I always wonder how those same people can call themselves Christians if they are willing to do illegal or unethical things to save a buck.
@sabrinamassie56068 жыл бұрын
+LivingMyBelovedLife I'm on a septic tank - Filling the tank with paper over and over and over is very costly - Not to mention the cost of electric to run the pump for constant flushing. If it's yellow, let it mellow .. If its brown flush it down is the rule in our house too .. The belief that your toilet will die sooner because of this is absolutely ludicrous ... I clean my toilet daily - I use homemade toilet-bombs daily ... Used toilet paper goes in a coffee can with a lid and taken out DAILY... This is NOT gross ... it's simple, common-sense in my opinion !

I'll type it up and add it to this comment tomorrow! It's so easy .. even my grandchildren help .. You can add a wide variety of Fragrance Oils or Essential oils to suit your preferences.. But I typically use Tea Tree and Eucalyptus .. The Tea Tree is antibacterial, anti-fungal and kills many viruses as well. The blend is so fresh and clean .. We absorb far too many chemicals through our skin - particularly these sensitive areas... Kudos to you !!

2-2/3 cup Baking Soda 1 cup Citric Acid 2 Tablespoons Peroxide 2 Teaspoons White Vinegar Witch Hazel in a misting bottle as needed You can use any fragrance or essential oil you wish. I use 1 teaspoon Tea Tree and 1 teaspoon Eucalyputus ... Now - when you add ANY moisture to the citric acid it's going to start to fizz.. You really don't want that to happen .. Mix the wet ingredients with the Baking soda thoroughly first.. then slowly add the Citric Acid .. stirring CONSTANTLY .. You'll be putting these in molds .. A mini-muffin tin, a small silicone mold .. whatever you have on hand. Just try not to have detailed shaped as they're more difficult to unmold... IF while mixing them to mold the mixture is still too dry to hold its shape you can spritz it with the Witch Hazel. Just don't over do ! Allow to dry a few hours.. carefully unmold and there you have it .. Depending on the size - use one or two each day. I like them to be about 1 oz each. You can add a few drops of food coloring if you like, but I see no need. Keep them in a dry place (A sealed jar) as moisture will mess with the citric acid These work GREAT for daily cleaning ... You can swish it with a toilet brush then flush. Perfectly safe for you, your pipes and septic systems. And they make amazing gifts !

I agree with you on so many of the same things. Even though I have never worked as a server, I do know how servers are paid so I always tip well when I eat out. Also, family cloth--a big N-O. I also flush after every bathroom trip because of smells. I did have a pet at one time, sadly he has passed away. I would never have voluntarily given him up just to save a few dollars. What he gave me in unconditional love and companionship was worth far more than the food costs, toys and vet bills.

We've totally done "family cloth" (me and the kids, number 1 only) and we do 'if it's yellow, let it mellow' too....meh, doesn't bother me. I cloth diapered all three of my kids and I use a menstrual cup/"mama cloth" in lieu of disposable options (much better for our health too). We use reusable "kleenex" now, too...I guess what I definitely wouldn't do is too many 'convenience' type things like paper plates or napkins or cups and stuff to potentially 'save money' on water, electricity, etc. if it worked out that way. And yes ALWAYS TIP. I like the top comment here with 'if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out.' :)

I agree with you on all of your "too fars." I am retired and so even though I have a little bit of debt to pay off, I have a sinking fund for modest vacations and I search for free or low cost entertainment in our little college town. For example, my friend and I just went to a free University concert that featured saxophonists doing their final performance for the semester. It was great! Then we just went out for dessert...I got water and a piece of no sugar pie at one of our 24 hour restaurants here. Total cost of the evening: $2.12 :-)

HA ha - Oh some of those made me laugh - you're really funny! I'm with you on the laundry and toilet paper. Although, and I get a bit of ribbing for this, I only ever buy the cheapest, own store brand, toilet paper. It performs the function - so it's fine. Occasionally I do buy the lovely wet wipe tissues, or really cheap baby wipes. You have a lot of integrity, esp about arguing a bill and tipping. Although in Ireland, service is sometimes woeful, and if it's REALLY bad, then I don't - which is very rare as I don't eat out hardly at all. I'll tip a taxi driver though if I have used one. Great video.

I thought these were really interesting. I have to say, some of it never occurred to me as being optional, like the toilet paper thing. I like the idea that some people are prepared for any situation, and don't need the t.p., but I have to agree, mine is staying. Also, as far as cost goes, I have been really really broke, and I have always been able to come up w a way to get toilet paper. If you coupon, you can save a ton. Stealing in general is wrong of course, and I agree w you about the stealing toilet paper, I would also add things like printer paper and postage from jobs, that ads up, and they have costs too.

You come up with amazing, original ideas :) I don't do coupons. I practically get hives watching "how-to" coupon videos. I can count the processed foods that we eat on one hand and never have seen coupons for things I would use(Hunted high and low for Tom's Toothpaste coupons and Yes to Carrots shampoo and cream rinse coupons). I do have coupon guilt, though. But people talk about stacking coupons and combining with an app now. I don't even get the newspaper!(Oh, maybe shouldn't have told you that!) Ugghh. . . I don't do coupons. Rarely. If a coupon fell out of the sky and was for something that I actually used then I would but so far none have fallen out of the sky at my house. I still have coupon guilt, can you tell? The other thing I would NOT do is NOT give at church. Other things can go, and DO, but giving at church is not one of them. Be a cheerful giver. We always have enough. The Lord provides. Once again NOT against coupons. I might have coupon appreciation even but, oh no, can't do it. Oh wait, I ALWAYS use coupons at Michael's and Hobby Lobby. I do use coupons after all! :)

Ok,...I'm pretty much with you on MOST of these..the laundry one, well, some times, you have to hand wash and line dry. Stuff happens, and there ya go. But the one that really irks me, is the tipping. I was a waitress once upon a time, and I understood it's called a "TIP" not a guarantee. Tips are earned, with good service. I realize some people are just jerks who don't tip, but...I'm going to be honest, if the service is crap, I'm not tipping. On the same plate, tho....if the service is good, I'll tip happily! And a good amount! :) And using their wage as an argument for why to tip isn't fair. In most places, they get a base pay (which is less than min. wage) and if their tips added in to their hourly doesn't add up to min wage, the employer is suppose to make up said difference. There's a lot of people in this world who get min wage, that no one ever tips....so, I don't agree with that argument. It's just my opinion on the topic, though. :)

I don't know what brand of 2-ply TP you buy, but I get the Walmart great value ultra strong (comparable to Charmin), and not only is it better than any 1-ply brand out there when separated, but it's super easy to pull apart. Their biggest package lasts me 2 months! I have gotten the odd package now and then that had several roles that were very hard to separate, but overall it's very easy to do it with this brand, and like I said, it's nice and thick even when separated. Have you heard of bidet toilet attachments or seats? The Biffy Bidet is under $100 I think, and it will leave you shower clean! Think about it, if you had feces or urine on any other part of your body, would you be content to just wipe it off with some dry paper? No, of course not! I think a big misconception about people that use cloth after toileting is that it is used just like toilet paper. On the contrary, the private areas are cleansed with water and are as clean as they would be when stepping out of the shower and toweling off. A bidet attachment will save you money, save you storage space (you won't have to find a place to store bulk toilet paper), and is more hygienic ESPECIALLY for us ladies. In regards to the family cloth, if it is used after a bidet, then it is no more unsanitary then our underwear and towels, and is even cleaner than cloth diapers and young children's "soiled" clothing and sheets. If somebody is using cloth like they would toilet paper (just wiping and then washing it), then that is absolutely unsanitary. (Georgia)

What's too far? I saw on an extreme cheapskate show how this one lady made spaghetti for her small family. Well she took the excess spaghetti sause off all the plates and poured the sauce back into the jar. Then she had one light bulb and made her husband take that light bulb and unscrew it from lamp to lamp in each room that needed light. I saw one gal "take" personal items from family members homes and return the items back to them at Xmas as gifts.

OOh I saw those. That is exactly what I consider too far. Anything that is a health hazard, an ethical issue or just plain gross is outside what I'll do.

everyone deserves a tip. they might just be having a really rough day
@Magdalena2879 жыл бұрын
On the not flushing thing, you're going to spend WAY more money buying and installing a new toilet when it becomes so stained and gross from not flushing then you would from just flushing every time you go. I'm cheap but I also want to be able to invite people to use my restroom with out being embarrassed.
@BudgetGirl9 жыл бұрын
+Valerie Wood Amen! Plus my dog drinks out of the toliet.... so that would be gross. :-)

Budget Girl lol so does my cat, good point!
@livingmybelovedlife84478 жыл бұрын
+Valerie Wood Actually you're going to have to replace your toilet or parts sooner if you flush every time because you are wearing out the parts quicker. As for staining, my G-d I still clean on a regular basis. That's just silly to say I'd have to replace it because of staining. Also, I live in a drought area so it's the right thing to do to conserve water besides the fact not flushing every time cuts the water bills way down.
@Magdalena2878 жыл бұрын
LivingMyBelovedLife I'm not sure about that, that's something I would have to ask my husband (about the toilet replacement). I can't stand to have dirt or filth around so even if you wash it, to have pee sitting in it for even an hour would gross me out. But I clean up to 5 hours a day, that's just my preference for the way I want my home to be. I mean no offense to anyone who who doesnt flush every time.

on the show extreme cheap skate i noticed some of the choices as extreme as they are they are not very efficant some of them like the lasagna in the dish wash dosent save you anything because foil costs more than using the oven
@BudgetGirl9 жыл бұрын
patinahunny I noticed that they seemed to use half a roll of foil to secure that too! Extreme Cheapskates has some weirdos on it, but I still watch for tips!

Eh, I use old t-shirts for #1 (urine is sterile), but I use TP for #2. It saves a LOT of money just with that. Girls use so much more TP than men. :P The t-shirts are easy to wash, don't stink etc so I don't see why it's a problem. I agree about the tipping too! And the spam...YUCK. Stuff is so damn nasty. lol Great video. :)

sorry to comment again! I am kind of new to your channel and I was just wondering what your debt was at the very beginning? Like was it all student loans or did you have CC debt or a car payment?
@BudgetGirl9 жыл бұрын
Blessedmommy22 I think I had maybe $200 on a credit card, but that was paid off immediately. The rest of the nearly $32k was all student loans. thanks for your comments!

tipping: isn't being a server also an option? I have to say, my wife and I have had bad service several times; however, we've always left a tip. Simply out of social same. We have complained to managers about it on way out. Which is preferred by servers? No tip or minimal tip with notifying your boss?
@adjones879 жыл бұрын
MsKeepMoving You know if you don't tip that the server has to pay taxes on your bill? If the service is THAT bad, yes it can be absolutely horrific, tip at least the taxes and notify the manager. Even if your meal was completely paid for, tip $2 or $3 (depending on your bill amount). And make sure to truly identify why your experience was bad, don't not tip because the kitchen screwed up your order or the restaurant was out of what you wanted, that's not your server's fault...I'm sure you know that, but some people still don't in 2015.
@Mariahsdunham9 жыл бұрын
+adjones87 server in Oklahoma (I don't know where you live) do not pay the dinners taxes. I was a server and I saw people all the time that did not deserve to get tipped and it's the law if you didn't make at least 7.25 the company must pay you the missing amount.
@adjones879 жыл бұрын
Alabama. Naw, company didn't pay us crap but $2.13 an hour. Most weeks we had $0 paychecks due to taxes...we literally ONLY worked for tips! That's cool of OK to do though!

Great video! I just saw this tonight while skimming through some of your videos. I recently posted a video of my most "extreme" cheapskate habits. I'll give you the link so you can see what I mean. Would you mind if I shot a reply to this video? If you'd like to share a video of the your more extreme cheapskate habits, I'd love to see it! If any other vloggers would like to add it, I'd be happy to make a playlist of those videos. Thanks! Keep up the good work! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGWpiYetqpyDftE
