Woomera was a fantastic place to live. Loved it. We used to hire a train and go to Kingoonya and Tarcoola races, sleep on train. Had so much fun there ! Travelled around on my old Army landrover and trail bike, zig zagged all over the place. Used back road to Coopers creek every time we had a break. Thanks Andrew

Hi Andrew, I know what its like to live in these small communities (20 years a Soldier). They are usually very 'family' orientated and have good support networks with them. Because everybody is in the same boat, they are generally supportive, creative and stick by each other. I hope you enjoyed your journey down Memory Lane. Thanks for watching.

I recall stopping at Ivy Tanks in December 1970 on our way back to Sydney on our first leave period as Nashos who had just passed our SAS Selection The bowser was one of the old glass topped devices with fuel measurements marked on the glass, situated next to a 44 Gallon drum from which the fuel was hand pumped. The toilet was a pit with a hessian fence on three sides. How tough and (?) and uncomplaining were people in those days ? The road was not much better, there was a 9 inch drop-off/approach on the cattle grids, and the travellers stuffed broken limbs off trees into the massive pot-holes. I also recall seeing an old Holden station wagon out there, with the canvas showing on the rear tyres. Maybe their car is one of those at Koonalda in the graveyard ?. Oh, and Steve, Emu's can swim ! Mate had to drive around Wellington Dam in Collie WA to bring his pet emu back after it swam across, quite a distance.

On a side note, you would not recognise Campbell Barracks now. They have spent a Kazzilion Dollars (and rightly so) on a complete refurbishment and brought working and living standards well into the 21st Century. Pretty much everything now is purpose designed and not based on the typical Infantry Battalion layout of the original structure. I hope your journey down Memory Lane and Ivy Tanks was a good one. Seeing your section of the trip from Wirrulla to Kingoonya reminded me of a trip we did in 1987. We were on our way to the Black Duck Rally in WA and had taken a detour to see Ayres Rock as it was called at the time, and were heading south via the Stuart Hwy. Having arranged to meet a mate in the caravan park in Ceduna on a certain night we found ourselves in Glendambo that afternoon. Our group 'leader' (an army officer with a map) identified that we cut off 350 Klms going via Kingoonya to Wirrulla rather than the bitumen via Port Augusta. It seemed like a good idea at the time, so off we headed , we were two BMW R100RSs and two K100s. It was sandy in places but RSs only have a certain amount of steering lock and after that its just gas it to get it straight again. We stopped for a photo opportunity of the sunset on the salt pans as a backdrop for one of the K100s as it clicked over 100,000 Klms. Dark settled in and I remember thinking 'well it could be worse, it could be raining..' and so it did. The road had turned to goop and its the only time Iv'e had road spray come up over the screen of the fairing and land in my lap . When we got to Wirrulla it was just before 8:00PM so it was straight to the pub in hope of catching a counterie, we were in luck and the kitchen was still open. The publican noticed we were covered in crap and asked "where have you boys come from ?", "'Kingoonya" we replied, "Couldn't have - that roads' been closed for three weeks with flooding" he said. Nobody told us. After dinner we headed off into the night to Ceduna to meet our mate as arranged, he didn't turn up!. Like you we had to find the car wash the next morning to get the mud out of brake calipers, off the front of the fairings and engine, it was like cement !.

Great video, thanks. I don't understand why anyone would rescue a dingo though, just so they can go out and kill more of our native animals. A dingo is definitely NOT a native dog, THAT was the Thylacine that the dingo sent into extinction on our mainland. The dingo is a feral pet brought to Australia by Aboriginal people somewhere between 4,000 and 8,000 years ago.

Glad you like the vid...you're right about the dingo being introduced. From Google... The dingo is Australia's first introduced species, but its history has been uncertain until recently. While the dingo is an introduced species, it has been in Australia long enough to become a functional part of the natural ecological system as a top-order predator. I would rather rescue a Dingo then a feral cat, rabbit, wild pig, camel, cane toad, fox, feral goat, feral donkey, brumby or water buffalo not to mention a lot of the vegetation that has been introduced and out of control. Thanks for watching.

@@mongreldogproductions You last paragraph is 100% up there, all bad animals. But I cringe at Google saying, " it has been in Australia long enough to become a functional part of the natural ecological system as a top-order predator." Also, Australian law considers the dingo to be a native animal. I have to say though, only in law. Does that mean too that the cane toad will gain 'native animal' status if it's here long enough? The only competitor to the dingo is the Australian Quoll.

Hey mate, any travel east of Nullarbor requires a permit obtainable from the Yalata community website. We do not encourage travel along the Old Eyre Highway. This is private property. Please do not encourage your viewers to break the law.

News to me…if I thought I needed a Permit then I would’ve applied for one. There is no signage on maps or on the ground to indicate that you are entering private property. I looked on Google for Permits to travel the old road and couldn’t find anything. Can you post up a link that might point me in the right direction. I should add that we did not ride thru or enter ‘the Community’. When you say “we do not encourage travel along the Old……”; whose ‘We’? Thanks for watching.

If you really think that the outback is a 'moonscape' you shouldn't bother.
