The story is that Intuit has done just that: blocked movements to simplify the tax code or for the IRS to offer free tax software.

“We are not involved with the snap repackaging. It has a lot of issues”, Besset adds, noting that “the best way to install Steam on Debian and derivative operating systems is to […] use the official .deb”. -Timothée Besset, a software engineer who works on the Steam client for Valve Those who don’t want to use the official Deb package are instead asked to ‘consider the Flatpak version’ - though like the Steam snap the Steam Flatpak is also unofficial and not directly supported by Valve but unlike the Snap it says so in its store listing.

What's funny is that I began using KDE connect in Windows. I think that's part of why I went with a KDE distro, so other DE's going for something similar seems like a great move.

Why use an old version of an OS when the newer version is most likely more efficient and performs better, as well as the newer apps, even on older hardware? Linux isn't Windows!

@@TheMarkRich What does this even mean?: "they appear to me to be just a new repository central of distros." The repositories have nothing to do with them, and all Linux distro's use repositories, and you can even add repo's to your package manager, but it's not reccomended if you don't know what you are doing and don't make sure whatever you get from them will run right on your Distro. I can get regular packages, flatpacks, and snaps from the Arch and AUR repos, and other than in Ubuntu (Which I haven't used in over a decade), Flat packs are known to be better for many reasons, and for me they have so far had way fewer problems, and I'm not saying they aren't better on Ubuntu too, just that I don't know if the snaps can and do get around having to have older versions of packages on LTS distros like Ubuntu, but assume they do, at least a little, since the Kernel matters too, not just shared libs and what not.

@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem Yeah, not worth it.🧐 People risk their security over a false sense of security!🤤 Why punish ones self? 🥵 Most Linux distros from today will still run on 15 year old hardware and without as much extra bloat to notice any: Linux isn't Windows where you hang onto it as long as you can, for fear of what problems and nasty crap updating comes with!🤣🐧🐧🐧🥳

As a Manjaro Gnome user I have flatpaks enabled, but I've never use them, as I just take the native packages, and AUR packages, as even with dependencies the file sizes are usually smaller. Also it's good to see Budgie getting Wayland support, I just hope the resource usage for Budgie on Solus does not increase because of it, as it's great for older hardware.

Do you uninstall the unused flat pack versions? It not only frees up drive space, but also increases read and seek times.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 3 ай бұрын
@@Bob-of-Zoid By default upon install Manjaro does not install Flatpak packages, it merely gives you the option to enable the Flatpak repos in Pamac if you want to use them, same for the AUR. I keep it on just in case there is no other option to get a piece of software I might need. So there is nothing for me to uninstall as I've not needed it yet thankfully The only software I've used on Manjaro that's not from the official repos, or the AUR so far as been RockBox to install custom firmware on my SanDisk Sansa media players, and that's an AppImage I rarely use unless there is a RockBox update, and those are far, and few between.

@@CommodoreFan64 I see, I'm on Arch (EndeavourOS) and any flatpaks are either in the Arch repo's or in the AUR, I could of course install the PPA for the flatpak repo, but never had enough problems with the good old standard native packages, and so hardly ever install a flatpak. I only do so temporarily if a bug arises bad enough I can't use an app for a short while, or if I cannot get an app any other way. When I read your post I spaced the part where you said you have them 'enabled', which of course doesn't mean installed. My brain made a boo boo!😅

The Sisyphus name comes from the Greek mythology. Sisyphus or Sisyphos (/ˈsɪsɪfəs/; Ancient Greek: Σίσυφος Sísyphos) was the founder and king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He was punished for cheating death twice by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. Through the classical influence on modern culture, tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean (/sɪsɪˈfiːən/). Given Redcore Linux's rolling release nature, Sisyphus si a fitting name as the program is "punished " to update the system forever, only to find out new updates once its done.

I truly want gentoo to have a installer script. Arch has one now and for how long it is to compile every package once you mess up the install from gentoo. It's unlikely you'll find time and motivation to try again.
@michael_tunnell
@michael_tunnell 3 ай бұрын
this is basically what happened to me both on Gentoo and Arch, I used both for a while but once I hit a huge error it wasnt worth installing again so I switched. Arch has since addressed that but I agree, Gentoo should do that too.
@10leej
@10leej 3 ай бұрын
I disagree because Gentoo is about choice. An install script takes away from that. Gentoos philosophy of being a choice 1st distro is why you have to compile software. Of course they offer a binary repository, but it's not enabled by default, you have to choose to use it.
@KoopstaKlicca

@@10leej With the exception of practical limitations, like spending time making it, why can't there be a *choice* between an install script and not?
@michael_tunnell
@michael_tunnell 3 ай бұрын
@10leej you make a good point about Choice but there is a potential path for having both. the installer doesn't have to be binary based, it can still be compiling things but be a much better guide through the process. in my opinion, Gentoo saw the value of adding binaries after 20 years of not having them and due to this they are getting a lot more attention and people talking about them. The same thing would happen for an installer. The current, or at least last time I did it, install process is like having to do homework during the install. That's fine occasionally but its going to drive a lot of people away, even technical people who dont have the patience to do it more than once, such as myself. :D

When I lived in Germany all of my taxes were automatic, there were never overcharges, nor the many and high expenses of dealing with pre-estimating taxes, agents, investigations and what not to catch cheaters, no user errors in having to file themselves, especially how utterly overcomplicated it all is here (Designed for you to make mistakes, pay fines, and keep agents employed which our taxes pay for...). You don't get refunds of course, but you know exactly what you can spend when you get your pay check, and what stuff costs in the store because the taxes are included in the price of items... Just better in every possible way, and When our government "Improves shit" to be no better whatsoever, and feed you that line of BS that it cannot be done the same way here because the US is larger (One of the dumbest things I ever heard in any application) is a crock of shit! Improving the system to work that way won't only save the tax payers money and grief, but also the government, and it can and will help the government way more than the tax payer. You don't even have to look up tax rates, because they are listed on any financial transaction and on price tags... So why don't the improve it, well just like everything here that needs improving: so the government can whine about having to spend so freaking much and do so much work (Doing nothing) and give themselves raises higher than any employee in the private sector can even dream of! Thankfully the Biden administration has made actual improvements to so much it's not hard to imagine it's not on their to do list! Biden made America great again after Trump promised it and delivered none of it, he just made everything worse and brought our economy to an all time low, he just lied, lied and lied again relying on stupid people to just believe him in blind faith (It's all public record) and give huge corporations handouts, enrich himself while in office, and offend nearly all of our allies while kissing up to our fascistic dictator enemies... and FYI: America was never not great compared to most other countries, a few even larger and more populated!, and 90% of what MAGA republicans claim about how bad it was are claims without any evidence whatsoever! When White christian nationalists (MAGA) says "America"; a continent, and not all US territory by far they mean back before the civil war when people had slaves, there was segregation, woman had no rights, child labor was uncontrolled... or even further back, like 1300BCE when the US didn't even exist, and Levitical law was the law with the death penalty for even the most petty crimes AKA Judea! Pleas vote blue, because being in a cult is overrated and can backfire really darned quick, and almost always does, and it already has for a great many!

Thanks for sharing your experience. In my opinion, the reason these formats like Flatpaks are needed is two-fold. 1. it makes it easier for beginners to find software. 2. it makes it dramatically easier to convince a company to build for Linux. The traditional formats might be better in some ways like filesize (not always true) and potential performance boost of traditional but the complexity of making traditional formats is just a mess.
