I met him once, as we lived in the same town. We used to frequent the same live venue, the 147 Club in Cardiff. I made a fool of myself a bit, as I was a bit in awe of him lol. But he seemed like a humble and self effacing man, really, and hated too much attention...I heard a story once that Geddy Lee asked him for his autograph, and he told him to sod off! That sounds about right. 😁

Very underrated and influential band, many later bands cite Budgie as an influence such as Metallica and The New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I worked in a bar in Abertillery (Wales) where Burke occasionally came to play bass (he could no longer sing properly) for a band called the Kenny Driscoll band. I'd always carry his amp up the venue's steps and kept him hydrated with (soft) drinks. Absolutely lovely, gentle bloke who told me some great stories. Was sad to hear of his passing. Criminally underrated band.

Budgie were the only "Real" group to play in Gainsborough while I lived there - Real meaning they had released a few records and that we had heard of them. They were playing in the town hall, and of course we couldn't afford to go in and see them; so instead we stood outside for a while, listening (probably to the soundcheck, I now think); it was a Saturday in summer, the market place beside the town hall now empty, though it was early enough that sun was still up. It was always amazingly quiet at that time, in the hour when people had finished shopping and were having their tea and getting ready to go out for the night, so we were able to hear the music well enough. I don't think we stayed long. This would have been 1973 or 4.

Budgie's heavy rock sound formed part of the soundtrack of my youth and I still have fond memories of their early albums (especially 'Never Turn Your Back on a Friend'). For an essentially heavy band they were quite versatile and turned their hand to different influences from time to time (try the songs 'Parents' or 'Baby Please Don't Go'). But essentially they were no nonsense, heads down rockers with a penchant for amusing song titles. I first saw them play live in about 79/80 in the back room of a pub in Norwich ... they put on a stunning show for the 150-200 paying punters: loud, raucous and entertaining in equal measure. Over the years I saw them a few more times and finally in 2006, although the guitarist they had at that time wasn't such a good fit with the band's sound as either Bourge or Thomas had been.

Love this band. They have the distinction of being the band I have seen live most often. They toured a lot but they were based very close to my home town and they did lots of one-off gigs. I have always loved the tone he got out of his guitar.

Quite an eye opener this morning. Wasn’t getting into it till say, mid point, it felt like 7 different songs and kept on going. I don’t remember hearing anything from Budgie on FM radio but looking at their albums I remember Squawk, I think it’s cool. Roger Dean? So anyway, seemed like a band that would fit very well into the early heavier bits of my 8track collection, Purple, Sabbath, Trapeze, Blue Cheer, etc. Sad to hear of so many passings. Haha, don't that just epitomises the 70's. I'm having flashbacks to when my gorgeous, flowing, chestnut coloured hair, reached my waist. Sadly, 98% of that hair's now gone, but at least we've still got Budgie. And i think it's a little harsh to keep beating them with the Sabbath stick. This wasn't an unfamiliar tone for the times, and they did it really well. Great riffs, crackin' solo work, what more do you want. Though I do agree, maybe a little long, but I'll let it go cos of all the memories currently flooding my head.

Burke would want me to say that he was a Child of God , saved by Grace. I would like to tell the story of me as a 14 year old going on the bus into town and meeting a short long haired be-spectacled brown duffle coat wearing bloke, just in his thirties, sitting on his own on the top deck. "Are you Burke Shelley? I've just been listening to 'Bandolier' " I ventured , trembling! *this guy's a rock god - what's he doin on a No. 27 into town?* He was so normal. a year earlier I'd witnessed "It's Welsh Rock!" in the cough Eisteddfod Pavilion. Now , me bein a City Boy into Prog and Van Halen and the Toxic Twins the word Eisteddfod conjured up a load of old fashioned stereotypes of why the Welsh language was dying so despite that, I'd gone with all my classmates in Year 8 to be Young Free and Not so single. (Ha! Dream on boyo!) Not many of my mates had heard their music either but as i stared up into the roof at the compare John Peel DJ, I remember thinkin to myself that this was a meeting of two cultures and trends under it. And i felt proud that Peel was supporting Welsh music. It was filmed and broadcast later the same evening on BBC Wales and I remember the horizontal sound waves disrupting the tv screen. They had revamped their live line up to a four piece with the Welsh speaking guitarist, Myf Isaac (think Kim Mitchell in baggy denims) and had released Melt the Ice Away and Smile Boy Smile from Impeckable, which had got me sincerely hoping that they would chart big time. ...... because they were fab. Forty years later I'm sitting here on a milking stool in front of a computer thinkin IF ONLY... Yet our paths crossed on about three occasions since my teenage years. A beautiful guy. And the best bassist this side of Geddy Lee . No! Only kiddin'. Yes my Welshness makes me biased, yet the cover versions of Budgie tunes by 80s & 90s music giants say everything you want to know of their Status as an Unique sounding Beatles and Led Zeppelin inspired rocking man jam band - who missed the buses of Fame & Fortune on numerous occasions only to plough their own B roads in the Fields of Heavy Melodic Beauty.

One of my favourites. Whatever they did, they did everything just right. You'll find they're a more diverse band than those that targeted in entirely on that "heavy" sound. An example of the lighter side of Budgie (apart from their name, their attitude, their song titles) which still rocks with energy is the happy song, *Smile Boy Smile* kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJSmpqetnbGhh6c It's from *Impeckable* - which illustrates another of those points. You and your love could dance to it, actually. Just pogo around and knock as many things as possible over while shouting the lyrics at each other. It would probably lack a certain amount of decorum, but it would be fun, so why not?

You're doing Budgie? From your comment apparently you've done some of their work before. I had no idea or I didn't remember I like this old stuff, but IMO it was better in the 70's when it was new and I was a teenager discovering new music. I think this came out in 1971. Some old stuff doesn't stand the test of time, especially their vocals. That is the weakest part of many bands. It's no longer fresh and different and it's not timeless. But I applaud you for getting some historical perspective on music. I suppose there's lots of stuff you could tackle: PFM, Alquin, ... actually you might really dig Alquin, a lot.
