The master craftsman Nidome Yoshiaki making a custom extra-long tanto designed by SeidoShop for Miyamoto Tsuruzo Shihan (Aikido) and now available as a standard product : www.seidoshop....
While a lot of tools are used for this production (as it's now a regular Seido product that has its own set of settings at the workshop), the overall process still took about 3h (can be reduced to about 1.5 to 2h / piece when working on multiple pieces).
All custom bokken are fully handmade, which takes about 5 hours.
This video doesn't contain any subtitles/indication yet, but we'll work on it soon !

Your sense of observation is astonishing, although it didn't go as far as the video description. Of course it's a Tanto, it's in the description. Still, it's the same step for a Wakizashi or a Bokken.

+Paul Conway I'm wondering if the people who're commenting about how involved it is have ever actually worked with those types of tools. With as experienced the man is, and not to mention that nearly every one of his tools has a built in template or guide, it's almost mindlessly simple to replicate. Band saw, planer, electric router, drum sander, belt sander, hand planer and some sand paper; You could make damn near anything with all of these handy.

+Motegii then again, without the right dimensions, your DIY bokken wont be right

+Motegii The overall shape of the Bokken isn't that hard to make... Chinese made Bokken have quite a good shape as well. No, what's more complicated is the wood selection, the initial cut (what part of the plank is good enough and how to cut it in the right direction depending on the fibers alignment), and finally the finish to have a surface as smooth as possible. If you take a Bokken from a young craftsmen that just started to learn, and one from master Nidome in your hand, even if made from the same piece of wood, you immediately feel the difference.

A very fascinating video! Clearly a case where I "see" the Master at work but I do not SEE what he does. I am sure I do not comprehend even 1% of what was done!

Do it! You won't regret it. A few months I bought a few blocks of wenge on a whim to make wooden tanto. I've now made 4, with 2 more on the way and I can't stop carving these musical sparring weapons. There's also 4 linear feet of red oak waiting to be carved into suburito in my near future :)

Awesome, though I washopi g for the more traditional way - this wool have to do. Really I was worried about the drying process. Now I wonder how the sword will hold up in practice or even a actual fight. Thatnks for 98th video....
