Joe, I really enjoy listening to you dissect and analyze the Bills. I’m also happy you are so positive, but I’m just so skeptical and nervous with Bass kicking for us. I feel like we can immediately chalk up one or two losses as a result of Bass’ kicking. It pains me to say that, but everyone is biting their nails whenever he gets up to kick a field go, even if it’s a chip shot. Its a real shame because Bass was someone we could count on a couple years ago, and then suddenly he just fell apart.

I think if T. Bass was around 85%, nobody would complain too much, but it is a concern. There is a reseason that they call Chicago the "Windy City", so if a kicker there can hit 90%, then he should be able to do it in Buffalo. James Cook and his drops and fumble issues is a mystery, considering his scouting report coming out of college was his "receiving skills" was his strength. But, I think if there was fumble issues, it didn't show up because he didn't carry the ball a whole lot in college. There might have been a reason for the low carries.
@Rob-cw9jr2 ай бұрын
The coaches don't know who their starters are, with health issues and so much transition this year. They are doing the shotgun approach, while hoping the cream rises to the top. The fact things are so unsettled approaching preseason game 2 is certainly a departure from the "automatics" that were the training camp players bound to be starters of the past few years. Keep calm and carry on, and hope McDermott & co. see elite performances and not "I guess this will do".
@tankninja12 ай бұрын
So 6/11 of the teams with +90% rates were dome teams. The 5 outside teams, only the Chiefs had a competent offense, even then they really struggled early. Seems more likely the teams would burn out in the red zone and kick 20-30 yard FGs, which statistically over the decades have a 90% success rate. Meanwhile all last year the Bills were stalling at midfield and choosing between converting 3rd and forever, or kicking +45 yard FGs. The high end of odds from 45 yards is maybe 85% depending on source, average falls off to maybe mid-upper 70%. A strong wind, which is pretty much a constant in Buffalo, probably makes a 45 yarder more like a 55 yarder, which league wide is a coin flip at best. Edit: And when you kick from further, especially in wind, you need to kick lower and get more horizontal velocity on the ball, which also makes it more likely to be blocked or tipped. Kicking from shorter ranges it's not as much of a problem because you are kicking it more vertically.

It's a long season. Strength, conditioning, nutrition, recovery are disciplines that can make or break a team's chances for reaching and achieving in the post season. This is not a deep team at skill positions. Injuries happens so I expect all the WRs and RBs that make the team will need to contribute without a legit "go to" outside Josh Allen. Keon Coleman and Ray Davis will need to be effective for this Bills team to do any damage this season.

I think they want to keep Claypool. He had a strong mini camp just unfortunate he got hurt. Think they’ll stash him on PS and bring him back when he’s healthy. I’m definitely worried about Tyler Bass confidence especially after he missed that FG vs. Chiefs. He was very good prior to the contract which is why they paid him. It’s all mental with him. James Cook is a one trick pony. He struggles in pass protection and ball security. With the offense Joe Brady trying to run I think they want a more balanced RB. Decent player but I don’t really see him in the Bills future long term.

What is becoming a trend or recurrent issue is Beanes inability to put together a quality roster in key areas to help augment his one unquestioned great roster addition of Allen. How many things have failed tho with recurrent wr issues that lack quality or depth or revert to drama issues from the past with examples being diggs and claypool ( sorry , I called this immediately as zebras , or divas , don’t change stripes or behavioral issues. Beane has codependent issues and his ego makes him think he can fix problems that more than one prior gm had already failed at. Taking the rose tinted ego filtered glasses off allows anyone to have seen the claypool issue before he arrived in buffalo. Yes , how does an undisclosed toe injury go from a day to day issue to being an IR issue; well without beane being willing to be transparent about the injury , it only stands to reason old character issues are responsible and this is beane driven). This hodgepodge of wr’s will doom this season , just as signing the cheap dolphin wrs last season who produced in one game only and nothing in the playoffs. Here beane goes again ; mostly a victim of his own bad signings with an aging miller, prematurely signing bass to a deal that has cost us a SB shot last year and is already rearing its ugly head ( or foot) once again. Punters have been nonproductive and failing to have the courage to wait out the truth on the Ariza issue , will leave more bitterness just like trading away lineman prematurely as they went to Cleveland and excelled. Now we also have recurrent issues with a back that had 1 decent year , but has critical drops and fumbles that are more noteable than his one productive yardage year as we watch him go down with any contact. Not going to mistake cook for Thurman in any phase of being a productive back , ever! We were asked to endure old backs way past their prime in gore and Murray and just because we have Josh , there is no forgiving the stubbornness in relying on backs who can’t be relied on for short yardage, to catch the ball , and certainly not to be productive in the red zone , near the goal line , with any consistency. Now because of poor cap management or inability to be forward thinking , we now can add safety as a weak roster area , and he took one area of strength which was a consistent o line last year, and has created a recurrent theme with a line that was blown backwards in the entire first preseason game. Maybe they will jell , but the majority of beans tenure the o line has been mediocre more than they have excelled. So just a few weeks before the 7 th year of having a unicorn franchise qb, here we go again as injuries begin to look bothersome enough to expose the lack of roster depth ( didn’t even mention the ridiculous backup qb situation ) , and we are also dealing with a 1 st year dc and barely a 2 nd year oc . Winning franchises don’t keep having the same issues every year , but BILLS FANS are expected to accept the same recurrent issues all while saving up to afford the psl’s of a new stadium with a product on the field created by Big halter beane that most likely will still be without a Lombardi just as they have always been. I hope I’m wrong , but being a fan since ‘ 63 , and having watched every SB pass my favorite team by , it’s more likely I will unfortunately be right again as it looks like this season is again unlikely to finally be league champions. It might be time then to move on from this Carolina way of doing things!

Joe, let's put this squarely at the feet of the man who has consistantly made our ST worse since being hired: Matthew Smiley. Last year, we started drives after kickoffs at the 18 yard line on average, even though any kneeldown would have had us start at the 25. In the final game of the season, Smiley decided that the shriveled and injured corpse of Sam Martin would be better than a fully healthy Matt Haack. As a result, Martin shanked two punts in KC, giving the Chiefs great field position. When did Bass's performance start to falter? The last two years, conveniently after Smiley was named ST coordinator. Are we really giving Smiley a pass just because Nyheim Hines ran back two kickoffs vs the Pats? Because outside of that, ST has been a mess ever since McDermott fired Heath Farwell because Leslie Frazier couldn't stop a nosebleed against KC in 2021.

Cook drops basically every big play pass attempt that goes to him. He was last in the NFL in yards after contact and he fumbles. I actually see no place for him on this team because he can't catch you don't want him as a third down back because he can't break tackles you don't want him on the first two downs he is garbage in short yardage. I would see how he does with the new kick return and if he's bad at that just ship him off.
