IT'S FUNNY HOW THINGS ARE I'M 75 YEARS OLD AND WHEN I WAS IN GRADE SCHOOL IN MONTREAL QUEBEC WE WHERE TAUGHT ALL THE SONGS OF THE OLD SOUTH. STEVEN FOSTER WAS A WORLD WIDE SONG WRITER AND MY DAD WOULD TALK ABOUT HIM AND SHOW ME THE HOTEL WHERE STEVEN FOSTER STAYED. BUT TODAY SCHOOLS DON'T TEACH THE KIDS THE OLD SONGS. IT'S TOO BAD EDUCATION HAS FALLEN.

The song is originally about the prostitutes that populated Buffalo, New York’s Erie Canal district, and was later adapted to whatever town a minstrel group was playing in. Also, George and Edwin Christy formed their group in Buffalo, and where they invented the concept of the minstrel show. Famous Jigg dancer Kitty O’Neil also hailed from Buffalo, and popularized dancing to the song that was later attributed to / named ‘Kitty O’Shea”.

Good to know ! I think we knew some of that... Not sure the Christy's 'invented' the minstrel show, though. Pretty sure it was Dan Emmett and the Virginia Minstrels in 1843... Just sayin'.
