Getting oxidation of of boat gelcoat and returning it to like new gloss is a three step process. First, we need to buff the boat with a wool pad and compound to remove oxidation. Second, once the oxidation is gone we need to polish the boat with a synthetic pad and a polish to get the boat as glossy as possible. Finally, it is time to wax. Waxing is important to protect the boat. However, it is the least important of these three steps! Focus on doing a great job of compounding and polishing and you will get great results! If you have any questions after watching the video just leave them below in the comments and Ill get back to you. Brian
Products I recommend using:
Presta Super Cut Compound
Presta Chroma 1500 polish
Presta White Wool Pad
Presta Green Synthetic Wool Pad
Farleca or Colonite Wax
Makita 9237 Buffer

Thanks for your clear & concise presentation. After watching I purchased some Presta Supercut compound, Presta Ultra cutting creme (couldn’t find the chroma you used) & Collinite 476 super coat wax. I’m using it on a fiber glass Freightliner truck cab that is/was chalky. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I previously tried to use my car polishing equipment and wasn’t getting the finish I wanted. I looked on KZbin and found you. (I would never have used anything this aggressive - but glad I took your advice). Thanks again.

Thank you for the video my boat was badly oxided being a black and Red Hull from the 80s. The only thing I did different was wet sand. I couldn’t get a nice shine while compounding so wet sanded before following your steps. Now it’s beautiful and the presta pads are reasonably priced but quality.

Hi Brian - I followed your instructions pretty much to the letter and got great results. Had some oxidation starting on the hull of my 23-ft navy blue Sea Hunt. Your three step process worked wonders. Threatening to shave in the morning in the shimmer of the finished glossy hull. End step I used Collinite wax which produced excellent results. Only thing that I did different was drizzle a wee bit of Baby Oil on the pad for the polishing step [advice from a friend]. Thanks again. Joe

Very informative. Thank you!! I would like to know after steps 1 and 2 are complete and it’s time to wax. Do you wipe the wax over the hullside and wipe off with a cloth. Or do you also use a soft wool pad and complete the wax process the same as if you were doing step two polishing? Thanks in advance

Hi question for you. Last season I followed your steps using all of your suggested tools and chemicals, and it worked well! I was running low on time and wasn’t able to remove all of the oxidation. Question is, will it hurt my gel coat to use the presta compound a second time, followed by presta polish and wax? Just want to make sure I won’t damage my gel coat. Appreciate the help.

After watching your video I have purchased Makita 9237, presta heavy cut wool pad, presta super cut. Wondering what you would recommend for the 2nd step or a full process to make a great result. I have it in a shop that temp is 65 and shade of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Brian, watching from New Orleans, and your videos are very helpful. I've got a 97 Grady white 272 Sailfish that topsides has no gloss to it, the hull sides has some gloss when viewed at an angle. I'm sure that compounding, polish, & a good protectant is well overdue. My question for you is, at what point would you recommend a wet sand be required. I'm pretty sure that the sides could go either way, but not so sure about from the rub rail up. Any help is appreciated Thanks Vincent
@SportfishingBoats

Vincent, sorry for slow response. The only way to know for sure if you need to wet sand is to compound a test spot and see what happens. Sometimes you’ll be surprised what will come out.

Hello. Great informative video. I have a question, is it necessary to wax the bottom half of the hull? And if so, how do you cover all areas when the board is on a trailer? Thanks in advance.
@SportfishingBoats
@SportfishingBoats 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Wax the forward sections of the bottom of the hull and don’t worry about the rest. For one it’s in no way realistic. Even in situations where the boat is in a dry stack marina I don’t wax the bottom even though there is good access. The reason being, when a fork lift picks up a waxed hull it can slide on forks smashing motors into lift.

After watching your awesome video I ordered the Presta white wool 9” pad for compounding and the Green presta pad for polishing. And I ordered compounding and polishing liquid. Also the paste wax that you like because I can work in the garage. After applying the paste wax, would you use the green pad again to buff out the wax? Ir is there a special pad for that. I have micro fiber cloths but would like to use the rotary polisher if you think it will provide a better shine. Thank you
@SportfishingBoats
@SportfishingBoats 3 жыл бұрын
Nice👏. Your certainly can use polishing pad and the buffer to remove the paste wax. Can be a faster way to do it on hull sides. The results will be the same either way. FYI, the trick to using paste wax, particularly collonite, is to apply a THIN coat and let it haze over and then remove it immediately. This amount of time will vary by temperature. What you don’t want to do is apply some wax and leave on there too long. Quickly becomes hard to remove!😉. Good luck! Let me know how it urns out.

I've only bone the first step on buffing them, so I've pretty new to buffing. And I've only used 3M foam pads. And I love them for polishing the dimond plate, which makes it so much easier.

I'm 53 and don't have great shoulders and elbows. I have a Makita polisher/grinder that I got for free from someone who owed me money. Haven't used it yet. What RPM should I be using? When I work in a 2'x2' section - do I polish and then wax that 2' x 2' section, or compound the whole thing, THEN polish THEN wax? Thanks for the clear videos. I'll be taking your product advice. I'm restoring a 1978 Glastron. It has the factory metal flake on the deck. I wet sanded the oxidation off with 600 grit. Based on you comments it sounds like I need to now hit it with 1000 grit. After this am I good to follow this video for the next steps or do I need to do something else for a metal flake surface? Thanks Dave, Galena, Ohio

Dave, I don’t know. In 14 years I have never done a metal flake boat. Where I live is 100% saltwater boats and none have metal flake. If you have already sanded I would say just proceed just like in the video. But that’s a guess. Wish I could say with certainty....

Hey Brian!! Checking your video out from Seattle, love that your vid is simple yet very informative. I’m curious, can I use either of the pads you’ve used for the process you’ve explained?

Great Video! I liked and subscribed. Two quick questions about the process: 1) I assume I should clean the boat before cutting....is there a good effective way to do this in a Winter storage building without access to water from a hose? 2) In the past when I have attempted all this, there seems to be a chalky residue on the gelcoat after cutting.....should this be cleaned off before polishing? Again, any recommendations on how to do this, again without access to water? Thanks so much!

Thanks for the videos and tips. I have a Gel Coat travel trailer. Oxidation is worse in some spots along the same side of the trailer. Due to shading. Do I treat the whole side the same or would I change to a softer pad and different compound on the lighter oxidized areas? Thank you! Oh yea, I'm in Ohio.
@SportfishingBoats
@SportfishingBoats 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can switch. Just do a test spot in lighter area to make sure that there is no benefit from compounding. If there isn’t then there is clearly no reason to do the extra step. The test spot always tells the truth😉

Alan, rough guess= 1 gallon compound, 4 wool cutting pads, 2quarts polish, 2 polishing pads. A couple of wax foam applicators. Good luck with it! 53ft... my shoulders hurt thinking about it!😀

I have a 1972 Terry bass boat I got from my grandpa 20 years ago. How do you get into the smaller spots on a boat to when you are restoring it? I got everything but the buffer you have unfortunately I bought a cheaper one. But I have some smaller areas around the water well at the transom and along the top that is only 6 inches wide with a few troughs.

Hi great video. Thanks for sharing. I had a question. Roughly how much of the super cut compound do I need for a 30’ boat? The one you’re showing may be too much and don’t want to store it.
@SportfishingBoats
@SportfishingBoats 3 жыл бұрын
Here is the thing. You’ll probably need two quarts. But two quarts and a gallon are close to the same price and the stuff doesn’t go bad. If you buy the gallon you need a squeeze bottle to put it in and apply. The quarts are there own squeeze bottle so that isn’t necessary. Go either way you want.

Great vids Brian. Question on procedure. How big of an area do you compound at a time? I am finding the compound is drying quickly and its a bear to buff off. Am i doing it wrong? Is it supposed to finish glossy right after applying the compound?

No, I don’t add water. It is thick gritty stuff, that’s why it works so well on gel coat😉. Any soft foam pad will work to apply wax.

Presta’s white wool single sided pad is what I would recommend. That particular pad requires a 3M coupling an additional expense that isn’t justified for diy work IMHO. Use microfiber towels to remove left over product before going on to next section.

thank you for the info Question, You dont show the heavy wool pad here for compounding. Which one is that. Also i have some yellowing on the bottom of the boat that i usually use acid to remove. Should i do that first or will the compounding remove the yellow as well?
@SportfishingBoats
@SportfishingBoats 3 жыл бұрын
I’m using a black double sided pad in that video. A presta white wool pad will work well. You will need to acid wash the hull. Compounding won’t remove it. Clean the boat thoroughly and acid wash her and she’ll be ready to compound. Good luck with it. Reach out if you have anymore questions.

Hello, watching from Miami. Very helpul videos, thank u. Got a question for you. I recently had my boat compounded and waxed by somebody but I dont think they did that good of a job, so with that in mind, do I still use the Super Cut compound or use something less agressive? Trying to lesrn how to do it myself since I know the boat could be in better shape. No oxidation on it now, just not as shiny as I know it can get. Thank you

Have you ever used the Presta max complete compound (restore) for boats? Was hoping you would have input on how it compares to the super cut (mentioned in video)? And does it remove a heavier oxidation coat? Thank you for the videos!

Damon Stuart I have tried it. Not a big fan. Didn’t seem to do much if anything more than SuperCut. Even if it did, I wouldn’t want to finish with a heavy cut pad which would make another step necessary anyway.

Hello from Ocean Isle Beach, NC! I have a 2018 Robalo Cayman with a gray hull that is starting to get a few spots of oxidation, particularly on the transom. Most of the hull is still shining but I want to stay on top of it. I was wondering if the Presta Super Cut is too aggressive for my application at this point. Is there something less aggressive that I should try first? Or is it better to just do it the way you suggest even though my hull isn't that bad?
