It was truly beautiful. Even the Watcher's Council - who couldn't define love with one of Saint Valentine's bones, a philosophy text book, and the song "What is Love" playing in the background - outright stated that Giles loves Buffy like his own daughter. More than her actual father does. Did. What happened to him?
@vmp9167 жыл бұрын
It's funny you mention it. The Giles-Buffy dynamic in this song is interesting. Notice he is the last one to join in on the second half of the song. You can read that a lot of ways. My take is he is a bit weary about Buffy's current head space. Now he definitely didn't see the whole heaven thing coming, but he probably had his concerns.

It is kinda sad how Giles smiles at "hey I died twice!". He understands it as "hey, we can even overcome death" while in truth Buffy is telling them early on that her coldness comes from the experience of being brought back. "It doesn't" matter does not mean what everyone thinks it means after all and this early foreshadowing is great and makes this smile even more sad.

I adore that last part when Buffy starts singing. You can mute the video and still get everything that truly matters. That's good filmmaking right there. At first, Buffy lets her eye wander over everyone present, but when Giles doesn't join in (because he knows something's off) her eyes are glued to his. It plays almost like a seduction. Keep in mind what he told Willow during their argument in the kitchen: "We still don't know where she was." He may not be able to put his finger on what truly happened to her, but he's not easily fooled. When he does join in, he's hesitant and quiet - and she knows she hasn't convinced him, so she cracks that joke about dying twice. And only after he smiles and breaks eye contact (i.e. she's successfully taken his mind off his suspicions) does she acknowledge the others again. It's so simple yet so effective. No need for grand camera moves or soppy music to cue the viewer in to what's really going on. Just good directing and acting. Hats off!
@philbertchow5425 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. Smiling is an odd reaction when someone reminds you they’ve died twice. That smile never made sense to me. I would have a somber look on my face if I were Giles.
@dreamersrealm5096 Жыл бұрын
@@philbertchow5425 You never laughed at an absolutely inappropriate moment? Or without feeling any joy at all? I interpret that smile as one of relief; her cracking a joke, no matter how morbid, must mean a lot to him. After all, Buffy's displayed a twisted sense of humour before (I prefer my evil like I prefer my men: evil). But it also has a transactional quality: For the first time since her resurrection, Buffy reaches out/appears to reach out to her friends. What's he to do? Reject her?

I remember in high school when we were doing our first musical, I really wanted to next year do a stage version of this episode, and the teacher loved the idea but said we wouldn't be allowed to do it because of Willow and Tara (conservative small town in Ireland). In my vision of this song, I always wanted after when Buffy sings "hey I've died twice" to have Anya mouth "three times" to the audience because she's the only one who would know about Buffy's other death in the Wishverse.

What I like about this is the double meaning behind Buffy's verse. To the gang, it seems like she is saying that as a group, they can overcome anything, making a joke about how she has died twice and they can still win. But for the audience, this ties onto her previous song about going through the motions. Looking at it that way, he words seem more sombre as she sees all of this as going through the motions and pointless. Her saying I died twice now means that she doesn't see any consequences to fighting anymore, accepting that her life is just one big loop of the same events.

“What’s with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?” is fascinating because both lines include famous misconceptions. Bugs Bunny ate carrots not being he was a rabbit, but because he was parodying a comedian at the time who ate carrots. I guess at some point the reference was forgotten and people began to associate rabbits with carrots. (Same happened with nimrod. It is the name of a great hunter, but now people think it means idiot because Bugs used it to taunt Elmer Fudd) And carrots don’t improve your eyesight, the British spread that propaganda in WWII to hide the use of radar from Germany.

Anyone else in 2020 that is still going back and re-watching this episode of Buffy "Once More" ;-) When this show first came out and my kids were watching I said I am NOT watching anything called "Buffy the vampire slayer" ! within a season of half listening as they watched I found myself sitting down to watch with them, then it became MY show..lol Joss is wonderfully creative and the growth of the storyline and characters was anything but childish, he tackled many issues of the changing era within the storylines, but I think this was one of, if not my favorite episode. So what if every character didn't have an opera star voice. (Though Giles, Tara and Spike were all quite good!) The episode was a lot of fun, and yes Anya and her "bunnies" about had me falling off the couch laughing. After a depressing day up in Seattle, it put a smile back on my face :-)

I swear, somehow Anya is behind this whole thing, she was able to interrupt Xander twice and Tara. Its like she has limited control and just wants to warn everyone about bunnies.
